Anybody here know why Jim Renner withdrew after 16 holes on Friday? Could face suspension unless he's hurt. Just cashed big check at Pebble after tying for second. He was five over with no chance of making cut. Local kid from Plainville, Ma.

Anyone else see Rory smoke the spectator in the camera, who then fell back into the cactus?

GMac with yet another miracle save
He's yet to hit a tee shot with the lead. That's pretty amazing. On the flip side his opponent today, Victor Dubuisson, has yet to hit a tee shot while trailing.

Today's matches start shortly. Day v. Oosty is probably the heavyweight bout today.

Oosthuizen v. Day
Furyk v. Fowler
Els v. Spieth
McDowell v. Dubuisson

The thing with this tournament is the difference between the 1 seeds and the 16 seeds isn't all that big.  These are all players who can, on any given weekend, win a tournament on the tour.  Contrast that to the NCAA basketball tourney, for example, where a #1 seed and a #16 are always going to be worlds apart, talent-wise.  An "upset" at the WGC isn't really all that much of an upset.

Els v. Dubuisson is turning out to be a great match. Ernie was 3 up after 4 holes, but Dubuisson battled back and had the lead on 16 where Ernie sunk a 32-footer to tie the match. They head to the 18th hole all square, winner gets Jason Day in the finals later today.

Also, the course and sponsor contract runs out this year. I wonder what happens to the event next year. I love the match play format, but it's difficult for TV when the best day of the tournament for TV purposes is the 32 match free for all on Wednesday, and then you only get 8 players playing on the weekend. Then there's just a ton of down time when you only have 2 matches going on at one. Faldo has suggested some sort of a round robin format to keep guys playing to the weekend. Something like 16 groups of 4 where each player plays everyone else in their group and then the winners of each group advance to the knockout round. Seems intriguing, but that means the winners would have to play one more match than they already do.

Really impressive job by the Frenchman of pulling it together after having nothing at the start of the match.
Same with the match with Day...showing some brass balls winning the last two holes to send it to extras.

Championship match going to extras. Day was dormie after 16, but Victor hit some incredible shots to win 17 and 18 to extend it.

Pretty sure he said to himself, "You know what? Fuck it. Let's see what happens." before he swung at that.
That's exactly what it did. He sort of surveyed the green, and everything, but then just stood over it and took a whack at it.
