2014 BB PC Thread: Turn and look for the ball

I just had to look up who Dominic Raiola is.  There was no mention of this play in the gamethread or in postgame commentary.  What happened, why's it being discussed?

...ok, I now see there's broader ESPN coverage on it, and the full BB quote is:

"I'm sure there was a lot of frustration there from Raiola," he said. "That was obvious. He's never beaten us. He had a tough day in there dealing with Wilfork and [Dont'a] Hightower and those guys. I'd say that was probably frustration. We saw a lot of that at the end of the game -- [Tahir] Whitehead on [LeGarrette] Blount's touchdown, Mosley on the personal foul on the field goal."

That has to be the most shit I've ever seen Belichick talk about a defeated opponent.  Hell, any opponent.  It's bizarrely un-Belichickian, frankly, that he would call out three specific opponents for boneheaded, frustration plays.

Yeah, here's the play:
https://vine.co/v/O1bwWF1dT55

And then Raiola said this about it afterwards:

New England had been given a first down at the 1-yard line after a personal foul penalty on Detroit defensive lineman C.J. Mosley wiped away Stephen Gostkowski's field goal. So instead of kneeling, the Patriots continued running plays.

"I cut him. We took a knee, so I cut the nose," Raiola said. "They went for a touchdown at two minutes; they could have taken three knees and the game could have been over.

"I mean, it's football. You want us to keep playing football? Let's play football. No big deal -- it's football."

He sounds like the biggest douche on the team, and that's saying something.

The only comparable I can think of is that Pittsburgh safety Anthony Smith in 2007, who had guaranteed a Steelers win during the week.  Smith was beaten on a 50-something-yard flea flicker during the game, and afterward BB said something along the lines of "the play at the safety position was very inviting."

You guys don't remember Bill Belichick saying Freddie Mitchell after the Superbowl?

"[a]ll he does is talk. He's terrible, and you can print that. I was happy when he was in the game."

I'm disappointed in all of you.

Two refs staring right at it. So two punches to the head, front and back, admitted to trying to take his knee out on the last play. 15K fine, and he'll be right out there again next week? Player safety!

I think we know why Belichick was screaming at the ref in the last minute.

Holy shit. GJGE Tony Corrente and crew. That should have been an immediate ejection. I'm not sure I've ever seen that.
Refs were too busy calling the Pats for imaginary shoves all day but they missed that? Just horrible. Great new thread title, though.

He sounds like the biggest douche on the team, and that's saying something.
In Tedy Bruschi's chat today he pointed out some historic bad blood with Raiola:

I said this in the Bruschi's Breakdown last week. This is an offensive line that looks to get their shots. That was a nice way of saying they will cheap shot you at times, so don't stand around the pile and have yourself ready at all times. I remember playing against Detroit in Gillette Stadium and Mike Vrabel had an INT, with Raiola hitting him on the sideline to give him a concussion. I'm sure the Patriots were aware of Raiola and his history. First of all, you're glad no one got hurt. But you know you absolutely beat someone up when they get frustrated like that, and they decide to be tough when the game is over. You want to fight now? You want to come strong now? The game is over and now you want to talk trash and have this energy? What happened when the game was going on? We used to call these guys "fake tough guys" in the locker room. I get emotional about this because people still get mad about "running up the score" -- this isn't Pop Warner, this isn't high school, this even college. This is professional football. The games are played once a week. Defensively, we always knew our job was stop the offense and if we couldn't get that done, it was our fault. If you can't stop a team and they're scoring 50 points on you, whose fault is that. That's all I have to say.

Isn't punishment for the week's games usually handed down Tuesday or later? (I'm asking: I don't know.)
I believe NFL network reported it.

I believe the report is that the Lions will not suspend Raiola.  League justice is yet to be meted out.

Yesterday's game was actually the first time I can ever remember a BB coached team declining victory formation when it had the chance.  My guess at the time was that maybe Josh had miscalculated the play clock or time outs or got a bit fouled up by the fact that the penalty meant it was an automatic first down.  Or maybe Belichick was just pissed off that the Lions committed a personal foul on the FG attempt and he decided to stick it to them.  Not sure really, but it definitely was interesting to not see them kneel on the ball.

The implicit message is even better:  I'm going to go ahead and comment about you because I know there's no fucking way we'll see you again in January.

Awesome.

(2:00) S.Gostkowski 20 yard field goal is GOOD, NULLIFIED by Penalty, Center-D.Aiken, Holder-R.Allen.
PENALTY on DET-C.Mosley, Personal Foul, 1 yard, enforced at DET 2 - No Play.

The reason the FU TD happened was because of Detroit's insistence on playing like assholes. Raiola should probably worry about his own poorly-behaved teammates.

Oh sure, Detroit brought it on themselves.

Back in 2007 BB made comments about "running up the score" issues, saying that he felt that kicking a field goal was more akin to running up the score because it's so easy, and that trying for the TD gives the D a better chance to stop them.

"Asked why he would go for two fourth downs in a blowout, Belichick responded, "What do you want us to do, kick a field goal?"

Obviously it's a different situation (he had just gone for the FG on 4th, very close to end of game, etc. etc)

edit: and because of those differences I do think it was mostly an FU TD, but at least there's a little bit of context.

Caldwell called out Raiola, but stopped short of fining or suspending him...

Caldwell said he spoke with Raiola about his play and that the NFL is looking into it for potential discipline. NFL Network reported that Raiola will not fined.
As for Mosley, Caldwell said he did not yet speak with the defensive tackle, but that his play "was flagged and it was flagged appropriately."
"When you're dealing with a place where you haven't been before, it's a constant battle every single day," Caldwell said. "Every single moment, so that's not anything unusual. But I think most of the time that our guys are guys that listen. Every once in a while, you run into a guy that's not swayed by either threats or eloquence and, so, if that's the case, you've got to get rid of him. But nevertheless, we don't have guys like that and our guys just keep striving to do what we want to get done."
Caldwell said "we don't condone" the questionable plays by Raiola or Mosley, but he stopped short of calling either play dirty, as the Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork intimated after Sunday's game.

and later this...

On if he would have let the clock run out if the Patriots would have taken a knee: "I know you guys can sense when coaches get frustrated with certain questions. What they do is up to (the Patriots). That's their business. What we do is up to us. It's our job to stop them and keep them out of the end zone. Plain and simple, that's it. End of story. We didn't do our job."

I know Jim Caldwell isn't exactly regarded as a paragon of intelligence and virtue around these parts, but I think he handled it properly.  It's the league's job to hand down that discipline, not the Lions.  At the same time Caldwell did pretty much publicly criticize Raiola (and Mosley) and intimated he was upset with their behavior.  That's about as far as a coach should go in public.

Edit:  http://www.freep.com/story/sports/nfl/lions/2014/11/24/detroit-lions-dominic-raiola/19491363/

Edit:  I have no clue what he was talking about with the eloquence thing, however.

Last question to BB today: do you see any similarities between Rodgers and Brady?

BB: they both wear 12.

And then he walked off.

Reiss also asked him about having never faced Rodgers, and we got an "It is what it is. Whatever hasn't happened hasn't happened. I don't really put a lot of stock into it."

I think we may have a new title:

"We'll see how it goes against the Jets," Belichick said. "We've played other teams and different matchups and all that. The Jets are pretty healthy, they had one change on their offensive line but the rest of those guys have all started 14 games. They've had pretty good consistency at tight end. The running backs are very good. The quarterback's a good runner. We'll see whether we can improve against the Jets in the running game. That's what we need to do."

http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/new-england-patriots/post/_/id/4774486/belichick-getting-ready-for-jets-best-shot?ex_cid=espnapi_public

I'd bet the context was about the Jets's running game, but it's still pretty funny when read on its own.

Whoa -- much angrier Bill makes an appearance in today's conference call than in yesterday's post-game.

- On the offensive line: "We had a lot of execution issues on offense. We didn't execute very well in any part of the game. We had mistakes everywhere. Multiple mistakes everywhere."

- Re: Flemming ~3:15 in: "We need all of our players to play better. We need our good players to play better." (Emphasis mine)

- "50 yards of offense in the 1st half, that's not going to win many games. We were lucky to even be in the game."

- "I don't want to take anything away from the Jets, but we have and we'll need to play a lot better than we played yesterday."

Practice is going to be a blast this week...
