Oy. Brutal for the Padres. At what point do we start reevaluating at his contract? I don't think we're quite there yet... but that shoulder scares me, and now the wrist on the same side. 14 years is a long time to commit to a guy who's only played 130 games once in his career.

Dodgers or NY for Freeman right? With all the smoke around Olson and NY I’m surprised he didn’t land there.

With NY taking on extra money to get Donaldson does that take Cashman out of the Freeman sweepstakes?

I mean, Patient First can diagnose a fractured wrist.
My guess it was hairline and he really did'nt know until Padres doctors looked at him.

As far as motorcycle, nothing confirmed on that and he's being intentionally vague now

No, but Freeman has seemed set on LAD or ATL for a few days now. NY is at $236M and I think can go to 270 and could clear another 12-15 if they needed, so they have the room.

Langeliers in this deal kind of assures Murphy is on his way out, right?
Why is that? Langeliers has only played 5 games in AAA. Murphy doesn't become arb eligible until 2023 and isn't a FA until 2026. They can easily stash Langeliers in AAA for a year. Austin Allen is the only other C they have on their 40 man. I don't know a ton about Langeliers but the Fangraphs profile says great defensively, lots of power but contact issues.

I thought the Yankees couldn't be topped for Olson, but including Langeliers was big
Yeah, an equivalent deal from the Yankees would have been something like Oswald Peraza, Luis Medina, Randy Vazquez, and Oswaldo Cabrera. That's one of the bigger prospect packages to go out for a single player in recent vintage. Quantity and premium upside. I'm just surprised the Braves would prefer to do this, and give up so much potential cost controlled talent, for the right to pay three years of Olson's arb rather than pay Freeman.

It did seem kind of sudden after recent reports that there were weeks left in the process, so maybe we should wait for stateside confirmation.
I know the posting process has 2-3 weeks left, but with spring training starting and Opening Day coming fast, sudden seems like what should be happening with Suzuki.

Two years, Olson is a FA after 2023.

Pache is more a former top prospect than a current one. Maybe the Braves don't think he will be anything more than a defensive replacement CF. In over 100 games in AAA he has an OPS around .744, doesn't walk a ton.

I mean, the weather in Boston isn't bad from May-Sep, and we can just throw in a vacation house in SD for him in the off-season...

Why any decent player would want to sign with the Rockies is beyond me.

Lotta bad teams playing spoiler in this year’s FA market this year:

Rangers: Seager, Semien, Gray, Calhoun
Nats: Cruz
Rockies: Bryant, maybe
Tigers: Rodriguez, Báez
Cubs: Stroman, Simmons
Marlins: Avisail Garcia
Giants: Rodón, DeSclafani, Cobb, Wood
The Giants, they of 107 wins last year, are a bad team?

And the answer to why decent players sign with "bad" teams is simple: it's a job in Major League fucking Baseball. Beggars can't be choosers in a limited market. If the Rockies are offering the most money, why wouldn't a player sign there?

I know the Giants were a surprise last year, but calling them "bad" is a bit much.

Maybe so and I see your point. But even after signing all those guys, they’re projected for 33.7 fWAR, tied with the Marlins for the 8th-best NL team and 20th in MLB.

Suarez has been 199/293/440 the past two years and is owed about 35 mil over the next three years, so taking him on is part of the cost for Seattle.

Definitely a gamble for them, but the pre-2021 version of Suarez was a really good hitter. Even in a down 2020, he was “basically Kyle Seager.” Last year he was real bad, but I wonder if the struggles might have had something to do with the Reds asking him to play shortstop?

I think we can conclude that Kris Bryant isn’t walking through that door, so I guess the Colorado thing is real?

It’s just too bad that the Red Sox have no room for a right-handed bat capable of playing all four corner positions.

Or perhaps Bryant really wants to play at high elevation.
I am surprised the Sox haven’t been linked to Bryant; he seems a perfect fit. Wasn’t the initial reason that his return to SF seemed to be a forgone conclusion?

I'll bet he's asking for 5+ years; very good but not elite hitter on the wrong side of 30 who is in the lower half of the defensive spectrum and below average there, I would let someone else commit to that.

That’s true, it probably is all about the years. I suspect the reported interest in a guy like Soler was thinking he could be had on a 2 year deal (which now seems unlikely). I’m guessing the Sox will ultimately get a bat but it might be a while to see who will settle for a short term deal.

I prefer to go by what they have accomplished. Until proven otherwise the Giants are a 107 win team.

So the Reds and A's have punted their seasons already. Curious to see if A's manage to have fewer than 1000 people in the stands for one of their Tuesday games. I wouldn't rule it out. That ownership group has destroyed a once-proud franchise with extremely loyal fans.

If true, I'm glad that smaller market teams are competing for the elite free agents, but once again, do the Rockies have any semblance of a strategy?
Yes. And it was conceived by the famous tactician, Leeroy Jenkins.
