They’re gonna go after Ohtani big time. Not that they weren’t already. No Scherzer or verlander in their rotation.
I think they’re going to go hard after both Ohtani and Yamamoto.

Ohtani
Yamamoto
Senga

Amazing if they can pull it off.

Seems like Houston would still have two of their top prospects if they had just re-signed Verlander last offseason.

Given the leave he took last year, I wouldn't be surprised if he has other stuff going on and just really doesn't want to be on the west coast.

Players often put the biggest budget teams on their limited no-trade lists, like @Brianish said, that way they can negotiate something to waive it if they choose. That wasn't the case here obviously, but it often is.

Don't see Ohtani going for the Mets just because they offer him the most money. That doesn't seem to be his main motivation. He's indicated again and again he doesn't want to leave the Angels but wants to win and he's apparently quite comfortable in southern Cal. Seems like the Dodgers will be given every chance of signing him unless the Angels can somehow make a run in the playoffs. A Mets team that didn't even make the playoffs wouldn't seem attractive - even if they do offer him the most money. He's also said in the past that playing with other Japanese players isn't a priority..

There was a lot of hype around Watson when he was drafted (same year as Mayer, I believe), surprising to see him now as an afterthought in a weird trade
He's struggled, but I don't think he was an afterthought at all. Cleveland has two motivations here and #1 is buying Watson. The other is that Bell's a disappointment with a player option. As I posited last night, they were motivated to move him so that he can't block Kyle Manzardo's progress next year. Unfortunately, they had to take on Jean Segura's contract and he doesn't fit their roster at all. They'll find some at-bats for him the rest of the year and then trade or release him in the off-season.

Well the Guardians just released Segura, so you're absolutely right, it was all about Watson and moving Bell

Of course they know this too, but Verlander got A LOT more money from the Mets than the Astros are now paying. 29M for 2.3 years of Verlander is absurdly subsidized.

I get the Mets strategy of moving off these recent FA "assets" and turning the $ into prospects, but the prices they are paying for these prospects seems very high to me. They are getting good prospects but not exactly no-doubt studs.

Cohen probably doesn't care but other owners are really taking advantage of that. Sort of like reverse free agency, instead of players taking advantage of an owner with deep pockets, other owners are taking advantage of him instead. Assuming Verlander is worth something remotely close to his contract, paying 54M for those 2 prospects is pretty steep.

So the stories saying that the Mets have added a Trading Deadline championship to their Winning the Off-season title are wrong?

What did the Sox pay Moncada? There was also the DiceK posting fee…

I bet a lot of other teams are kicking themselves for not going harder after Verlander after seeing that massive subsidy
