Point taken, but when I don't know the players involved (as is usually the case), it's still a good starting point to put a deal in context. It's the first thing I look up, even knowing that the above is true.
Absolutely. There's no wrong ways to contextualize it for one's own reference. It's definitely not really ever safe to say that the other deal would absolutely have gotten the job done, though.

& I was more pushing back on just the idea of the FV of a couple prospects making the return the same as the FV of a couple others.

The Padres are such a disaster. All that money spent and they have to out and get 80 year old Rich Hill and Choi in hopes they can help salvage their season.

5 games out of a current 3-way tie for the final wildcard spot... plus you have the Cubs inbetween. I don't see it.

The Mets will receive OF Drew Gilbert from the Astros in the deal for Verlander, per source, plus at least one other propsect. It's not known how much money the Mets will send to Houston.

***

Gilbert is MLB Pipeline's #68 overall prospect and HOU's #1 prospect.

They’re gonna go after Ohtani big time. Not that they weren’t already. No Scherzer or verlander in their rotation.

The Mets prospect acquisition costs are extremely high. But I'm still here for the firesale.

Also, if the Verlander deal is anything like the Scherzer one, they're mostly off the player, not the contract.

Sure, but it comes with a shitty season as part of the package. You can't have a fire sale without a fire.
They just did what the Yankees did in 2015/2016. Bought an enhanced farm system to help set them up in the future. It is excellent for their organization and now they get to relieve pressure for the rest of the year while they sort out their offseason plans and give some prospects a real look.

Twitter/X is wilding about Kate Upton and less about Justin Verlander. I get it.

Not a strong future for Buck I’d think.

The Mets are now run like one of Cohen's funds. Bad positions get cut, regardless of their cost or who drove the initial decision. This isn't a revolutionary strategy but I am guessing that the head guy called for this versus the GM.

For former, its just exiting a losing transaction which happens in trading - its just an outcome - but for many front office types its essentially an admission of failure. It shouldn't be but it is.

No doubt. And in a sense, its to their credit that they pulled the plug. OTOH--Everyone they were counting on this year was to be with them next year. I would've expected that they just stick it out and try again.

One is Drew Gilbert who is their number 1 prospect
That's probably because he was their #1 pick last year. They promoted him to AA this year and he's been not so good. Which is why they are willing to let him go, I'm guessing.

Are the Mets eating any money?
