Even still, there aren't any enticing options on the C market really....so why not pony up the pennies it'll take to get a guy we know/like and Lester is at least comfortable with. Could sway things just a tad.

Sure, Ross remains an option to be the backup next year. It's just that I don't believe his presence is necessary to extract the best out of Lester, as that tweet kind of implies.

Completely agree CX would gain similar results.  This could be Lester taking care of a friend.  Making sure his buddy David gets one more day in the Boston sun.  If there were not an open spot, it would be unreasonable, but the position is open, the cost is reasonable , so make the pitch.

2.35 ERA and 8.3 K/9 with Derek Norris.
Also in 2013 he had a better ERA and similar K/9 with Salty vs Ross.

So really it means Ross caught most of his starts last year when he had a great year.

Well it would also take an option off the market for the Cubs....Might make Lester gulp wondering who he'll be throwing to. He might want one more decent contract, and pitching to a carousel of crap might hurt him at 36. <br />

I'm reaching. I know.

If true, the next step is to find a #2 via trade and cobble together a strong bullpen.  I am not sold in Andrew Miller for $32MM over 4 and I suspect that Barnes could make a nice bullpen arm this year to go along with some of the other AAA starters rom 2014.

No? It's up right now. It's a response to @Chrisfavoright. It says "That's accurate". Then the Chris guy tells people where he saw the announcement, and that's where the Saved By the Bellhorn tweet originated.

Regardless, Wesley is confirming that Lester has agreed to a contract. If you don't want to believe him, that's up to you, I'm just showing what is out there from a guy who has already broken the two Sox signings.

I disagree with this.

If Theo is selling the Cubs, it starts with him trying to sell Chicago as a nice area to raise a family, nice suburbs, very similar to Boston, which he knows Lester considers a comfortable environment. Then you move on to the guys he's going to be around everyday, Maddon, pitching coaches, etc.

Winning and free beer does not conflict a guy like Lester, not when its between the Cubs and Sox both of which look to win soon. It's the comfort that would conflict him, and that's where the Sox have a huge advantage, particularly with Farrell.
Splitting hairs and irrelevant now, but I think you're underestimating the allure of winning a championship with the Cubs, and he obviously knows Maddon and Theo very well anyhow.  They're all important along with family comfort.

Why would Lester set up meetings next week if he was going to sign today?

Because setting up those meetings will probably have earned him $10-15 million.

Deal on the table but not done. There's confusion there.

Given what we've learned about our 14-year-old wunderkind to this point, IF that is accurate he'd have said far more than "that's accurate" at this point. It's only in his responses to someone else, and doesn't appear on his main feed or in his chat. Either he's decided overnight to become low-key, or something is off

My guess would be because, as he has stated many times, he loves playing in Boston and did not want to go elsewhere.  He was willing to give them a hometown discount last year and while he is no longer doing so, all things being equal he prefers to be a Red Sox player.  They came to a fair deal and, knowing that they are trying to put together a competitive team and need to know one way or another by today or they have to turn their attention to other options, he decided to come back to Boston before meeting with the other teams.

Either that or...

Its a BS report and our jubilation is misplaced or premature.

His tweets say that starting tomorrow, if Lester is not signed, the Red Sox will start pursuing other options. Therefore the offer might not stand.

Edit: that's Lester's incentive to sign today.

Right. He would tweet that the deal is done.
This BellCharacter is just bs.
No signing yet.

You seem irritated by this kid breaking news.  Why?  I could care less where i get my confirmations and he's been accurate more than all the mainstream reporters combined.  Just enjoy the ride and play along, it's easier that way

He hasn't really been breaking news. He's been taking stories from other people and spinning as their own, for the most part. And if you read other things from him (he has a whole chat like thing going) he's basically pulling things out of his ass at this point. I don't really care that he's doing any of this, but he's got no credibility IMO

Fair enough. I'm more "irritated" at how the the world has turned upside down.

I have to agree. Furthermore, "That's accurate" is pretty ambiguous. Maybe all Jake meant was that Chris accurately read SavedByTheBellhorn's tweet,

I'm not on Twitter so I'm only seeing what arrives here.  I know the Marketing guy in FL broke Sandoval, but who had Hanley signed before him?

Wasn't it the other way?  SBTB retweeted their conversation?

Yeah, wasn't he hours in front of the Hanley news before it started to trickle out from the big names?

Only thing I can tell you is that Merloni has checked in with him, kid has revealed his sources to Merloni, who has confirmed they exist.

That's the most I know. Take it for what it's worth

Chris Meola, who broke the Stanton deal.

Though Wesley claims he confirmed it w his sources prior to reporting.

Here's how MLBTR credits the Sandoval and Ramirez news:

Hanley:
Oscar Prieto Rojas reported direct confirmation of the signing (Twitter links). CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reported today that a deal was complete (Twitter link). Jake Wesley tweeted yesterday that Sandoval and the Sox had reached agreement.
The contract breakdown comes from Alex Speier of WEEI.com, on Twitter. Heyman reported the final guaranteed figure, in a tweet. Manolo Hernandez Douen was first to report that the deal included a sixth-year option (via Twitter).
Panda:
Christopher Meola first reported that Ramirez would sign with Boston (Twitter link), and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweeted the terms of the deal. The year-to-year breakdown was first reported by WEEI.com’s Alex Speier (Twitter link).

My internet is being awful. Anyway, I went back to check and no, he credits the marketing guy in his first Hanley tweet.

EDIT: This is it

Per  @DfineNrmLC  The Red Sox have signed slugger Hanley Ramirez. @Ken_Rosenthal , @JonHeymanCBS ,@JonHeymanCBS  haven't commented .

I pray it doesn't get done today.  I don't want Lester at this price.  I'm skeptical about him going forward, this could easily turn into a bad contract in the same way the Sabathia & C. Lee contracts are bad contracts.

I would gladly let him sign with the Cubs.  The problem is, the Phillies probably want too much for Hamels and so that isn't an attractive option either.

The big question for me: let's say the Cubbies sign Lester, the Red Sox don't trade for Hamels, where do they go from here?  Perhaps signing Shields would be best, and then trade for an SP, while showing confidence in the young SPs already in the organization.  I would rather see the Red Sox do that than go Yankees style and overpay for Jon Lester.
