As for the 12s... the architects and engineers have a lot more to do with the crowd noise than the fans

Not really.  No doubt the building plays a role, but I've been to both Qwest and Gilette and the difference is palpable. The only thing I've experienced that comes close to the madness at Qwest was at a 2003 Sox-Wanks playoff game at Fenway (the best live sports experience of my life).  It's certainly not that Seattle has better fans, it's that they have the pent-up passion of a fanbase that's been starved and abused for years. When the Hawks are on D and it's third and long, those people stand up and shriek. It's ear-splitting and awesome and unnerving and annoying. It can totally affect the O.

Gilette fans have had years of success to enjoy. They're loyal and passionate and knowledgeable, but by and large they don't have the raw edge of Seahawks fans. How could they?  You can't sustain that kind of raw madness for 15 years. In 2030 Seattle won't have it either.

I think the 12s could arguably make some claim to affecting the Super Bowl against Denver. There's no way to know for sure, but the Broncos seemed flustered from the start and things quickly got away from them.

But the 12s were way wrong to think that shit was going to work against the Patriots. For one thing, you know BB would have had the Pats ready for whatever noise the fans would generate, and for another Brady and team were an extremely poised and professional outfit. Crowd noise is no big deal to them.

The Hawk fans any SoSHers met at a Super Bowl were most likely among the most extreme subset of the 12s. They were somewhat delusional and had an exaggerated sense of self-importance, but they do not represent every Hawk fan. I lived in Seattle for 24 years.  Most of the football fans I know are reasonable and fine.  After years of failure they're enjoying the hell out of these great Hawk teams. It's hard to begrudge them that.

I'd argue that the biggest problem at Gilette is that security really doesn't allow for a loud football atmosphere. If anybody stands up they're immediately yelled at to sit down because someone's kid can't see or their mom doesn't want to stand up because she can't see. They're so quick to pull people's season tickets in there that the fans that actually want to stand up and make noise can't.

IIRC correctly, the Seattle Seahawks #12 jersey was something like the 10th best selling NFL jersey of 2014. It isn't just a very small contingent of fans.

That's why I make fun of some Seahawks fans. Because I had "12ers" telling me straight up before the game that they were one of the most important aspects of the team's success.

I don't hate Seahawks fans any more than any other fanbase, really, but that kind of thought deserves a little bit of fair mockery. It's not the same as the Red Sox marketing team labeling Fenway "America's Most Beloved Ballpark." We don't control the Sox ownership.

You do get the concept that the 12th man or 12s is an ownership supported/pushed thing in Seattle, right?

Whether you like the wave or hate it, there's no doubt the fans up in the Pacific Northwest have been doing a rapid, surging wave through the stands like nowhere else. I recall it being discussed on MNF back when OJ was doing the games.

Speaking of which, did they straighten out their deal with Texas A&M?

There were rumblings that they weren't going to allow Seahawks to continue to use it after the previous contract expired. Did Texas A&M get more money? Still undecided?

I am unsure of what to think of 12s. Could the President of Red Sox Nation please tell me what to think? Maybe just a word from Wally?

I thought that's why they were stressing "12s" rather than "12th man"

I thought the transition from calling fans the "12th man" to calling them simply "twelves" was to get out from under A&M's thumb.  The phrase "12th man" is what is trademarked, after all.

That clears it up. Haven't listened to many Seahawks games. Didn't realized they had switched.

“I’ll take Joe Theismann first, I’ll take Matty Ice second, and I might take Doug Williams third, but I’m not gonna take Tom Brady to lead my team nowhere...Tom Brady is garbage. They've been making a change from the "12th man" to "12s" on all the official marketing stuff to avoid dealing with the trademark issue when their agreement expires in 2016.

This is a pretty entertaining read from Katie Baker at Grantland.  She does a great job complimenting the Patriots and calling other fans on their bullshit in a very subtle way without making it seem like that's what she's doing.  It's written more for the non-Pats fans, I think, but the absurdity of the situation and the game turned it into Pats porn.  Here are some of the better excerpts -- it's not long if you want to click on the whole thing.

Every good story needs a villain, and the New England Patriots came into this season having cemented their legacy as America’s Foe. Even fans who despise the shady, arrogant machinations of the NFL and scoff at every move made by Roger Goodell still can’t resist the conformist comfort of being casually anti-Patriots. (Whether you’re being weirdly serious or merrily ironic, Belicheat rolls off the tongue just like Nobama.) It’s just so easy to go that route, particularly when the Patriots are so very hard to play.

The Patriots converted each of their next three drives into touchdowns. Compared with the scrambling near-panic of Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor, Brady was terrifying in his precision. It was like watching a mosquito buzzing all around and then getting coolly swatted. It was like watching a dad teach his kid a lesson, or a surgeon suture something up. It was embarrassing, really: I started wondering if the Guinness Book of World Records person was somewhere in the stadium being polite and chipper and “Hey, this will just make it louder when the Bills come back!” or if she was theatrically checking the time and projecting condescension on the silly optimists who had orchestrated this doomed attempt.

The crowd was no longer on its feet at all times, and the volume in the stadium rose only when everyone was collectively agonizing over an unforgivable Bills personal foul or what they perceived to be an unfair call.  Many seats emptied out. The people in my section started making sarcastic remarks about Rex Ryan’s hallowed defensive prowess. This is what the New England Patriots do to people. It’s so much fun to hate them, until it’s really, really not.

After the game, a glum Rex Ryan took full responsibility for the losing effort, while Taylor blamed shoddy execution. That’s what the Patriots do to you, though: they leave no room for error, no space for mistakes. They are relaxed while they stifle you. They aren’t perfect, but they are something worse: able to quickly iterate. They make a mistake and come back stronger, better, more complete. They turn your gains into your loss.

I woke up this morning, got out of bed, made some coffee, and sat at my kitchen table wondering to myself what Dexter Manley thought about Tom Brady.  Thank God he was able to get on the radio to give that hot take so now I can go back to worrying about the European migration crisis and climate change.

I enjoyed that piece. My favorite quote:

In other words: the Patriots are Cylons.

Wait, picking those 3 guys as the answer to any question about QBing may be the weirdest thing I've ever heard.

Tom Brady can't pick up first downs? Does he mean only running? Matt Ryan doesn't run for first downs. WTF is he talking about?

Pretty sure Brady was in junior high and Ryan barely out of kindergarten the last time Manley suited up in the NFL.

I just spent an hour out my my morning watching that, and have no regrets.

My favorite part was watching Troy Brown - 8th round pick, 15 year career all with NE - again. One of my (and, I think, many of our) favorite Patriots of all time. Never the superstar, always the very, very important contributor. Love that guy. Also, Kevin Faulk - 13 year career, all with NE.

Troy Brown is a hero, no doubt.  I was at the stadium when he ran a kickoff (or was it a punt?) back for a touchdown.  It was years before he started to play defensive back.  If Brock Holt were to have a 13 year career with the Red Sox, play 120 games a year and have an OPS of .850, he'd be Troy Brown.

I watched this last week. One thing that stood out to me was just how badly the O line was abused in 2007. I remember it being bad, obviously, but with a little more clarity it's way worse than I remembered. I think Brady did about as well as he could have given the circumstances.

On the topic of Troy Brown, it brings me back to one of my favorite memories at a Patriots game as a kid (and for those who were at the game will surely remember this). It was in 2003, and the Patriots were playing the Titans in what was your typical out of division, early in the season matchup. The buzz around Gillette that day was that the Red Sox were playing the A's in what was the pivotal Game 4 ALDS matchup with the A's up 2-1. In the stands, I think about every other person was holding one of those cheap, 4x4 inch portable television screens or listening to it on the radio. I remember holding one of the televisions with about 30 people behind me trying to get a glimpse of the sox game.

Anyways, Troy Brown returns a punt for a touchdown, but there was a flag on the play- holding on the return team, so the Pats get the ball back around the 20 or whatever it was. As soon as the ref announces this, the crowd went absolutely wild. David Ortiz had just hit a 2-run double off old friend Keith Foulke to give the Red Sox the lead 5-4. You could see the Patriots and Titans players on the field, looking around at the crowd and at each other, as if to say "Do they know the TD got called back?" It was a pretty surreal moment for sure.

I have long maintained that Brady played very well in that game. Just about any other QB chucks up multiple INTs under that onslaught.

He also had a gimpy ankle.

If that ankle was fine, and if Gronk's ankle was fine a few years later, the Pats have two more championships.

How'd that outcome play out in the stands?  0-3 and heading to Pittsburgh in 4 days.  Love it.

General recognition that the season could be over in 4 days if it isn't already. How bad is Ben's knee injury? Everyone blaming the defense, and properly so.

If Harbaugh spent more energy coaching, and a little less whining .... In any case, he is politically deft, and I won't be surprised if somebody gets fired in the next week. Not him, of course.

Edit. Bengals continue to play beneath talent level, and Ginger is good enough to lose playoff games. Not very impressed.

At Gillette today and saw a dude wearing a tee-shirt that had the picture of BB and Ernie Adams that was used in the Do Your Job special.

Caption of the tee-shirt: Bill Belichick and Ernie Adams: Pink Stripes since 1978 (I may have the year wrong on that, guy walked by me too fast, but it was glorious and I need one).
