I mean this would be a hell of a lineup

1) Mookie RF
2) Pedroia 2b
3) Ortiz DH
4) Napoli1B
5) Sandoval 3b
6) Hanley LF
7)Xander SS
8) Castillo CF
9) Vazquez C

I mean pretty much no breaks .... Cespedes, Vic, Craig Nava all available for pitching ...

Holy crap. Boegarts for Zimmerman? Cueto? Cashner and Ross?

Cashner and Ross makes a lot of sense.

But most likely lands Hanley in LF.

Cespedes and Vic expendable for pitching.

I think they know the guy pretty well. Cherington was Director of Player Development during Ramirez' entire tenure with Boston.
Fair point, but people can change over the best part of a decade, especially in their 20s. You'd certainly hope he's matured a bit given some of the stories about him loafing in Miami, but then the Dodgers clubhouse didn't have a great rep last year. In any case, makeup would be my only concern (assuming reasonable cash/years).

I like the idea of Hanley on reasonable terms, but both is insane. Focus on Lester.

CALIENTE: #
RedSox conjuntamente con Sandoval, muestra marcado interés en Hanley Ramírez. #RedSoxNation #MLB

Does this mean agreement w/ Sandoval? Someone with better Spanish skills, please translate.

It says together with Sandoval the Red Sox are showing interest in Hanley so I guess it's just a Spanish retweet of Heyman

Gotcha, I read reading it "Red Sox in conjunction with Sandoval," which I thought was just garbled "in agreement with."  Disregard!

Maybe "concurrently" would be a more idiomatic translation.

I'm typically a fan of good defense, but with the marked decline in offense league wide seeming I wonder if the advantage tipping over to the pitchers doesn't render some of the benefit of a good defense less valuable overall as the pitchers will take up the slack anyway. shifting resources towards offense seems like a way to gain a sizable advantage over the rest of the league.

Specifically what are people guesses of contract value and length for Hanley?
It wouldn't shock me as 7 years @ 150 or so.  A deal coming together this quickly with no leaks of who else, if anyone, he visitied makes more sense if they guaranteed him a ton of years.

Fangraphs crowdsourcing:  5/90
Heyman's article:  Agent: 6 years, $122M. GM: 5 years, $90M. Me: 5 years, $105M.

Keep Nava as the utility backup at LF, RF, and 1B, with Holt as the backup at 2B, SS, 3B, LF, and RF.  Betts covers CF when Castillo needs a break.  Add a LH backup catcher.

If the plan is to give about a day off per week to most of your starters (since Hanley, Sandoval, and Napoli have injury histories, Betts, Castillo, and Vaz are young) Farrell could then get a game per week for Nava in place of all three OF and Napoli (moving Betts to CF to cover for Castillo) and a game per week from Holt at 3B, SS, and maybe *gasp* 2B every now and then.  Given one or two lefty starters per week that team could look real balanced on RH starter days while re-loading the lineup top to bottom and absolutely crushing the monster with pull hitting RH and opposite field power LHers.

That lineup.  It's so beautiful.  That's why it makes sense if Ben can pull it off.  Sign Lester, Miller and trade for a #2.  If you go over the tax limit for one year, no big whoop.  This team has a lot of cheap talent coming.

5) Sandoval 3b

7) Xander SS

You think they would do 7/$150 for Hanley?

I'm thinking his deal would be pretty much the same, if not a tick under, the reported 5/95 for Panda

Ya,  because of the RH power premium in the market and the fact he's average about 1 more WAR per season.
If guys like Martin and Sandoval are getting 5+ years, a legit all-star should get more.  The age/weight thing maybe offsets between him and Sandoval as well.
Wouldn't mind being wrong.

He's a legit All Star? Then why wasn't he an All Star the past 4 years?

The past 4 years he's averaging a OPS of .816, with a BA of .277. He also has declining defense, clubhouse issues, and can't hit for much power if he's an OF. He's a good player and an upgrade at 3B, but he isn't anywhere near a 7/150 player.

His .165 ISO would have been tied for 25th among outfielders with Alex Gordon. His .362 wOBA would have put him 13th between Justin Upton and Matt Holliday. He's not getting 7/150, but it's not because of his bat.

I like him and I think he'd be a good addition, but I think he's in the 5/90-100 and not 7/150

it's 18 AAV for Sandoval vs 22 for Hanley.
Fangraphs value had Ramirez worth 25.1 and 18.6 the past two years, compared to Sandoval 11.6 an 16.6.  He's been a better player than Sandoval the past 5 years (at a premium position, poor fielding or not).  Is he not worth more AAV?  I'd come down to 6 years, but again, look at the early contract demands for years.

I'd prefer they spend Panda's money on Shields now that Hanley is signed.  I don''t really see the need to sign both of them; pitching is the priority now.

Smart not only for the ridiculous lineup but a left side of Hanley and X could very well be porous.

Yeah, I'm really hoping they back out on Panda now and focus on pitching.

I may be in the minority here but I would love a Panda signing. I think he would wear out the monster with his oppo field swing. And given that Cespedes is a FA after 2014, we have our LF for a few years locked up in Hanley.

I'm thrilled with this. As unpopular as that may be

My love of a Panda signing would depend on the corresponding trade(s).
