Why shouldn't he be able to play either position? He said he's willing to move around, at the very least.

Left, yes. 1B? No, but we have Craig and Nava. SS? yes, if Bogaerts gets hurt.

My thoughts are that he provides better depth to this team than Panda would.

He said earlier in the off-season he as willing to move to left or first.

The same guy who broke the Stanton signing is breaking this. He at least has some credibility. It'll be about 2-3 hours before we know for sure
So I am assuming this means they got word that Panda was going back to SF?

Or they're considering both? They've expressed the desire to get more left-handed, as I recall. Hanley doesn't accomplish that. It's a bit confusing, if true, but we'll see.

Can't say in this, not sure. Will say that it was odd how many conflicting reports there were about whether the Sox had a real offer or not.

Seems like an awful quick timeline to find that out, present Hanley an offer, and have him accept.

I'm not sure why Hanley would sign without shopping around first, but maybe everything was stealthed a long while ago.
It would make sense they lock him up before deciding on 3B vs LF so they aren't boxed in.

I'm sure there was always an understanding on what it would take, which can make these things move fast

3b. And what's not to like? He's a much better hitter than Panda.

If Ramirez plays third, the defense on the left side of the infield is going to be terrible. The signing doesn't remotely jibe with all the Panda talk.

Mookie, Castillo, Pedey setting the table....Papi, Ramirez, Nap, and Bogaerts in the heart, Vasquez and Vic/Nava at the bottom.

This is a great lineup and truly allows for a Cespedes trade.

There's one lefty in that entire lineup, and he's 39.

I went to bed last night with them on the verge of signing Panda and wake up (yeah, I slept late) with reports that they are on the verge of signing Hanley. I consider that a good night. I know they need to get more left handed, but Hanley is a much better player. Last year he had a 135 wRC+ to Sandoval's 111 and a good chunk of that advantage is OBP. Over the last three years he has an 11.3 to 7.9 fWAR advantage (large enough sample for the defensive side to stabilize a bit), and is in much better shape so I'm more confident in him remaining effective for the life of his contract than Pablo who is probably 250 in his contract year. I also think the defensive gap will shrink if Hanely moves to third as well.

They can address the need for a left handed bat as part of moving an outfielder. I'd much rather see Hanley sign than Panda.

You're skeptical of a tweet from someone that no one has ever heard of? He says he's an "MLB Insider" right on his Twitter page.

Maybe I'm naive but I am 100% buying this, given his history on the Stanton deal and the fact that Hanley and Stanton have same agent

You mean the Stanton deal that everyone out there was reporting for 10 days?

Since you brought this guy into the conversation, do us a favor. Search the Interwebs and try to ascertain who he is. Does he work for any reputable news organization or is he just a fan spewing nonsense?

He broke the exact years and dollars 24 hours before any other source, and was given credit by some of the heavy hitters in the industry.

It's ok to admit he got that one.

Okay, I am apparently behind the curve on this guy.

But the nature of his posts scans more like a fan than someone with real info, so I'm still doubtful

Maybe the Sox offer to Pablo had a time limit, and his camp thought the Sox weren't serious about that.

Also the timing seems reasonable with Pandas decision. Wouldn't be surprised if Hanley gets the exact contract we were willing to offer Sandoval.

I would be pretty surprised if he signed for that this early in the off season.

Haven't you been paying attention? There are no rumors in that thread.

This is a strange turn of events and the only way it makes any sense is if Panda decides to go back to SF (or another team).

I think Hanley is the better offensive player, but he has had trouble staying healthy and has a less than stellar reputation for his makeup.

If it is indeed Hanley I've got to think there are some MAJOR shoes to drop. As someone noted up thread the Sox are waaaay to righthanded.

Hell of a lineup, RH heavy or no.

Fun writing Ortiz-Ramirez in the middle of the order, even if it is a different Ramirez.

If they are in on Hanley, it could just as well be for LF ... since he said that he'd be willing to make such a move

Yeah, Hanley to 3rd then LF next season with Garin taking over makes a lot of sense.

I recall Bowden's twitter getting compromised recently, so there's that.

I like Hanley's bat, but I'm really concerned about the handedness of the lineup, Hanley's defense and possible attitude problems. As wary as I was on Sandoval, I was really starting to warm up to the idea. Weight and free-swinging aside, his defense, hustle and arm are all very impressive.

Seems like way too many moving parts for either a Hanley to 1B or LF to work out. Would require a coordination of Panda signing, Hanley signing, and Napoli/Cespedes trade, to be nearly simultaneous.

Seems more logical that it is a Hanley to 3B with some follow up moves to swap out a Rh outfielder for a LH outfielder.

Why does it have to be simultaneous? They're not playing tomorrow

Cespedes traded is simple enough, but Hanley plays 3B for 2015. FO gets that "flexibility" that they love so much.
