I may be crazy....and obviously BB and the coaching staff have reservations....else why have Beadles in..

But I wonder if we need interior Linemen?

Andrews, Mason, Stork, Fleming,Kline and Jackson are a Young (and in theory) improving group. While not great last year the real problem seemed to be that the Tackles went down And Cannon getting Snaps and it domino-ed from there. Also while it seemed like a interesting concept....the "rotation" early in the year (later they had injuries which forced guys into playing time) might not have been the "Gee Whiz" idea it first seemed. Maybe they DO need that cohesion.

I have hope that with Dante back he can tighten these guys up (Pick the 3 best IOL and go from there). But Maybe....with Dante back he wants more or different talent.

According to a Reiss tweet and some other sources, the Pats had WR Nate Washington in today.

LB Karlos Dansby, another BB favorite, released by the Browns. NFL writers think he'll go back to Cinci:

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000644918/article/karlos-dansby-to-be-released-by-cleveland-browns
"They're in a rebuild," Dansby told Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot. "This will get me closer to my destiny.

"I'm sure the Bengals are licking their chops right now."

The inference is that Dansby expects to close out his illustrious career with a linebacker-needy contender, such as Hue Jackson's former club in Cincinnati.

Although Dansby continued to turn in big plays in his 12th NFL season -- forcing three fumbles and returning a pair of interceptions for touchdowns -- he was a prime culprit in Cleveland's porous run defense. It's certainly not unusual for a linebacker's tackling ability to fall off as he reaches his mid-thirties.
With Mayo's retirement, could Dansby an option for NE?

Edit: Dansby has been a dink in the past regarding Pats supposed foul play: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/05/14/dansby-suspects-foul-play-from-2008-game-in-new-england/

175 Carries less then Blount in a career 1 year longer....so its not like the tires are bald quite yet.

Hell 1400 carries and 2 years less then Forte who many of us wanted to snag.

I get there is a talent difference but thats a bunch more wear.

He can also catch the ball a little (27 and 29 Receptions were his highs).

Former Raven LB Courtney Upshaw may be drawing interest from the Pats: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/03/17/49ers-possibly-patriots-could-enter-pursuit-of-courtney-upshaw/
Per a league source, the 49ers and possibly the Patriots represent other alternatives for Upshaw, who started 15 games in 2015 and, in all, 55 games in four seasons — including Super Bowl XLVII.
Just to note, he's a former teammate of Hightower at Bama. One reason why he went in round 2 while HT was a first round steal?
One particularly eye-opening comment comes from a source of Pro Football Weekly's Nolan Nawrocki, who quoted an NFL executive as saying:

"The more Courtney Upshaw talked (in the interview process), the more I got scared. He has a lot of distractions in his life. There are a lot of concerns there. We need an edge guy, but we wouldn't touch him in the first (round). I'd have hesitations in the second where we're picking, after hearing him talk about grabbing his girlfriend by the hair."

Always amazes me that these guys evidently have zero idea of how to even fake interviews.

"Do you have a girlfriend?"
"Oh yea"
"She ever you know.....step out on you?"
"If she did I would show her whats what and then I would kill the dude!"

Instead of
"No Sir....but if she did I would move on to someone who would treat me with respect. I dont need that kind of negative distraction in my life." (thinking "the dude would be drinking through a straw...")

Not sure Fairley is looking for another 1 year deal, but it would be funny to add yet another former first round draft pick, as well as possibly another comp pick if he just does a one and done.

Yep, it's hard to miss the parade of former 1s Bill is signing. I have some trouble buying that he'd sacrifice anything to send a message but the FU element is fun to think about, even if it's not really what's going on.

Aside from that, what do people know about Fairley the player? The few tweets and small pieces I've read don't tell me much about how useful a piece he might be.

https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2015/03/06/free-agent-profile-nick-fairley/

While Fairley is certainly capable of overpowering offensive linemen, he has found a lot of success as a pass rusher through quick, skillful moves despite his size. He does a good job at swiping offensive linemen’s arms to prevent them from getting latched on. He also has a lot of success with quick swim and dip-and-rip moves, particularly to the outside of guards where they generally do not have help. As a run defender, Fairley can beat one-on-one blocks, but he is also strong enough to anchor down against double teams to hold his ground.

He can still clog the middle. I thought for sure the Jets would have interest after losing snacks, but after Forte the room may not be there.

I'm all in for a 1-year deal, even if it is a slight overpay. Having him rotate with Brown and Branch would go a long way in locking down the middle.

Agreed. Get the comp pick if/when he walks. Hicks coming here in late September, doing great work, and getting paid should hopefully factor into Fairley's thought process.

@DMooreNFL I would not be shocked if the #Patriots are able to sign a 1-2yr deal w/ Nick Fairley for 3-4mil AAV. Great rotational DL, like Hicks was.

Fairley was paid $5m in 2015, with $1.5m guaranteed.

Edit: a nice quick article on Fairley's visit by Conor Orr of NFL.com: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000645910/article/nick-fairley-to-meet-with-new-england-patriots?campaign=tw-nf-sf22901617-sf22901617
When players like Fairley, or Jonathan Cooper for that matter (whom the Pats acquired in the Chandler Jones trade), link themselves to the Patriots we automatically assume that they will achieve the potential they haven't elsewhere. It's interesting because that is the fear around football as well, that someone like Fairley or former No. 2 overall pick Chris Long could be had at a fair deal and end up playing better than they ever have.

You can almost hear BB's press conference at the draft: "Yes, we were stripped of the ability to make our own #1 pick, but we've added (x) first round picks over the past two months, so it's not an ideal situation, but we feel like we've been able to upgrade our roster in multiple ways..." or words to that effect.

Now if there's a way to re-word that sentiment in a phrase that would yield FUCK YOU ROGER as an acronym, we'd be ready for April 28!

I really don't think Belichick gives a crap when any of those guys were drafted.

It might be fun for some fans to look at as an FU to the league but I highly doubt that's the way the team looks at it.

I agree that there is likely little connection between the loss of the 1st round pick and the recent signings of former 1st round picks. I do suspect, however, that Belichick sees an opportunity for a win/win scenario by signing former 1st round picks to one year deals. If they can perform reasonably well in our system, at the end of the year, they potentially sign longer contracts at a fair rate as a reflection of the positive opportunity they received. If they perform reasonably well, but the Patriots can not re-sign them, potentially another team signs them at an overpriced contract, which benefits the Patriots via compensatory picks. If the player can not perform in our system, the Patriots wish them luck and move on without being under an onerous contract.

I suspect that if the players perform, the combination of the prestige of a former 1st round pick and the prestige of signing a former Patriot will drive up the future contracts these players receive which should hopefully increase the compensation awarded to the Patriots.

Maybe two of the recently acquired picks work out as hoped, one signs a long term deal with the Patriots and one signs a long term deal with another team.

All is quiet on the Nick Fairley front. Not even an update that BB & Caserio actually met with the lineman. Hope this means something is being worked on.

It's probably not worth mentioning but I got a news alert from CBS sports earlier today saying Calvin Johnson was un-retiring and signing with the Pats. The story was deleted within minutes. Not sure if it was a joke or rumor reported as fact--and I think the Lions would still retain his rights so it's hard to believe the story is true--but thought I'd mention it.

The headline is actually:

Ex-Lions WR tells Calvin Johnson to unretire and sign with the Patriots

It's about Nate Burleson's advice to Megatron. Nothing to see here.

I suspect it was related to this:

Nate Burleson, who spent four years with Johnson in Detroit (2010-13), has a plan for his former teammate. Burleson thinks that Megatron should take a year off and then join Tom Brady in New England.

"Congratulations on your retirement, man. Now, take this year off ... then find a way to land with the Patriots and get a championship ring," Burleson wrote recently for NFL.com. "You deserve it."

They likely misrepresented this article where Nate Burleson encourages Johnson to take this year off and then find a way to sign with NE

I have to say, I misread the Facebook newsfeed that said "former teammate tells Calvin Johnson. . . Damn interweb got me again.

If he did sign, I propose that it would be part of the Cancelling the Noise thread.
