Apparently Foster has been working out at his brother's training center (per Rotoworld), but the guys at the NFL's Around the League say he's far from working out with teams. I'd be really surprised if Foster's meeting with anyone right now. I say the timetable for Foster "watch" is near or at the start of the training camp.

I did not see Foster, or any reports of Foster, being anywhere near the Pats.

That said, it is easy for me to believe Pats could have suggested to him that if he's willing to sign a 'prove it' kind of deal that they'd be happy to sign him and take their chances. And, I'd expect Foster to want more money than that, so I don't think that will happen. Even if someone did see Foster, or a report of Foster, meeting the Pats!

Per ESPN, here are the top 10 teams who spent the most in the FA. Somewhat surprisingly, given the inactivity the first few days, NE is on this list (bold made the playoffs):
  1. Giants: $106.3m
  2. Jags: $74.4m
  3. Raiders: $70.72m
  4. Texans: $65.08m
  5. Eagles: $59.23m
  6. Falcons: $53.29m
  7. Bucs: $50m
  8. Bears: $38.66m
  9. Pats: $38.05m
  10. Chiefs: $36.9m
And the Jets are currently out of cap space. The 10 who spent the least:
  1. Bills: $80k
  2. Colts: $500k
  3. Packers: $3m
  4. 49ers: $3.13m
  5. Panthers: $3.65m
  6. Browns: $5.1m
  7. Steelers: $6.67m
  8. Redskins: $7.36m
  9. Bengals: $9.25m
  10. Cardinals: $11m

9. New England Patriots
Guaranteed money spent: $38.1 million

The Patriots' total ranks high, but it's a bit misleading because $30 million of it comes from quarterback Tom Brady's contract extension. While Brady will be 39 on Aug. 3, that still seems like a sound investment. Otherwise, the club has picked its spots carefully. -- Mike Reiss

All that list tells me is the Giants have had some really shitty drafts.

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting through the wind
Wanting to start again
Do you ever feel so paper thin
Like a house of cards
One blow from caving in
Do you ever feel already buried deep
Six feet under screams
But no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there's still a chance for you
'Cause there's a spark in you

Wow that list is dumb. They count the Brady extension because it was signed after free agency began and don't count incognito and Glenn because their extensions were signed before the free agency.. Even though those two actually were to become free agents and Brady was not.
I mean, not that it matters where anyone ended up on that list, but handling the data in such a way makes anything you could take from it pretty meaningless.

Link to the article, in case anyone is interested.

I've looked, but found nothing new on Nick Fairley. Anyone else having any luck?

#Patriots will be out on DT Nick Fairley, an indication he's expected to sign with #Saints. Should be a huge addition to their defense.

Too bad but I'm guessing money became a factor

Dogman2 is the greatest.

FWIW, the Pats offseason moves thus far have been almost perfect. Donald Brown - who I think does not make the team out of camp - aside.

It seems the NE FO is bent on adding depth to the DL, after losing out on Hicks and Fairley.

Pot Roast had signed a 1 year deal with Washington last year, earning $4.45m. He started 16 out of 17 games with 1.5 sacks and 29 tackles. Steadily declining since his 28 tackles, 3 sacks career year in 2013, but could be a decent rotational DT/NT.

To note, he apparently had migraines all year and had weight concerns (no surprise there), and the Snyders declined to bring him back.

How did Knighton grade out on PFF? No need to rehash the PFF is crap argument, but their line rankings can be somewhat helpful. His traditional stats were basically the exact same the last few years so hard to tell if he has lost anything. Turns 30 this summer.

Fairley got a 1/$3M, plus incentives, deal with the Saints. Makes you wonder whether he didn't like what he heard from NE, they didn't like what they heard from him, or he just liked NO better

Just an aside but Knighton is a huge Celtics fan. He's constantly tweeting about them (Woj actually answered a twitter question of his about what the C's will do this offseason)
Well, he's from Hartford ... so it makes some sense

PFF has closed all of its "premium" (I know, chuckles, right?) stats to the public. You can't even renew expiring subscriptions either.

From a quick Google search, he was a decent contributor, but not as effective as Fairley.

Knighton tweeted as follows today:

"Keep that word rotational out of any thing about me"

Looks like serving Pot Roast in Foxboro will be pretty unlikely.

Well, we won a Superbowl with fat ass Ted Washington manning the middle so why not look into Knighton. But Brown and Branch are already decent run-stuffing DT's, so the only way this works is if Knighton IS rotational

...or one of the other guys get hurt.
There seems to be an opening for another big guy who clogs the middle - looking at DTs on the roster, none of Easley, C Jones, Flowers, Sheard (would have thought of him more as an outside guy), Grissom or Vellano fits that mold.

I'm not sure how reliable these numbers are but Knighton only played 35% of snaps with Washington last year and 48% with Denver in 2014. So either we're taking the tweet out of context or I'm not sure what he's expecting here. He's clearly not a guy to put out there in obvious passing situations even if his conditioning could handle it.

Pot Roast has been vocally unhappy about his "welcome" in the F.A. even before he joined Washington, but he only has his discipline to blame. I'd be happy to cross his name off the list if he's not going to be happy about his rotational, yes, rotational, role here in NE.

Volin tweeted that the Pats signed CB EJ Biggers to a 1 year deal. 22 starts, 4 picks, in 7 years with Bucs, Eagles and Skins.

Dear Andy Reid,

Here are Danny Amendola, a slot WR your offense and your QB could really use, along with a 6th round pick. Would you please give us Jamaal Charles - who is 30+ and coming off acl surgery and who was semi-ably replaced by Chandrick West last season - in a trade that might SEEM fan-boyish but quite possibly isn't?

Sincerely,

BB

Edit P.S. Feel free to take Marcus Cannon off our hands.

It was something getting kicked around on PFW in Progress the other day. There's also the past relationship bw BB and Andy Reid in terms of trades. In other words, there's really nothing at all concrete about it, but it's not entirely pie in the sky.

Oh ok. Because if that was a thing.....it would be incredible.

As for WR Mike Williams, I'm very intrigued. No idea what he has left, but he had two really good seasons with a terrible Bucs team a few years ago, and obviously has some talent. Size and talent, actually. Very much worth a look-see.

Free agency must really be winding down when the thread is retitled for a guy whose last action was catching 8 passes in 2014.

It got traction because the Chiefs signed Spencer Ware and West to extensions. One would assume that they want to go with those 2 going forward. They were on record as shopping Knile Davis.

Charles would only be owed $3.75 million in 2016 by any team that trades for him. The cap savings for the Pats by trading DA is $3.545 million. Amendola would be owed $6 million in base salary by any team that trades for him but is a restructure candidate. If his contract gets restructured before the trade, it could lower the cap hit that KC has to take on.

True, but Mike Williams had as good of a 3-year run to start his career as one can hope for:
  • 2010: 65 rec / 964 yds / 14.8 ypr / 11 td
  • 2011: 65 rec / 771 yds / 11.9 ypr / 3 td
  • 2012: 63 rec / 996 yds / 15.8 ypr / 9 td
Injuries really derailed the next couple of years before sitting out last year. I'd think he'd be the ultimate "prove it" player and represents a true X receiver that neither Hogan, Washington, nor Amendola are. Assuming Dobson is a goner, getting enough out of Williams to make the team would be another coup for this offense.

Here
Williams is a physical specimen whose antics have forced him out of the league. He's a guy who probably comes for vet min and has a high chance of not making the roster, but who also has a potentially high reward with almost no risk. I'd love such a a signing, fully recognizing he probably would amount to nothing.

I'd like to see him sign with the Pats, if only for the entertaining John Harbaugh meltdown that will occur when the refs "allow" the Pats to sub WR Mike Williams in for TE Michael Williams.
