Probably nothing but this is silly season. BTW Dolphins fans down here already act like they've won the Super Bowl. Hilarious.
It's amazing. Every single year they cut or restructure big name free agent signings from past years and use the money to overpay somebody this year--who they will cut or restructure down the road to overpay somebody else.

LeGarrette Blount took to Periscope on Wednesday morning in order to interact with some of his fans, maybe sell a few "Blount Force Trauma" sweatshirts. In the process he ended up shedding some light on what he hopes will happen in free agency.

The Patriots 6-foot, 250-pound running back is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year officially begins on Wednesday afternoon so naturally he was asked about his future.

"You going to be back with the Pats," one of Blount's Periscope viewers asked?

"I hope so," Blount replied.

Blount also responded to one fan who expressed his desire to see Blount back in a Patriots uniform in 2016 by saying, "I'm trying to be back next year too, man."

Sanu rumor probably has a lot of merit since he played at Rutgers which just happens to be Belichicks favorite university. I'd still prefer Boldin. Strong smart receivers aren't a dime a dozen. Despite age he could probably put up a solid season with Brady.
Agreed. Sanu could end up flourishing in the Pats' system, but Boldin has a higher floor, and at this point in Brady's career if the offensive talent around him is solid/consistent, he can bring the team very far. We don't really need huge upside at receiver, just reliability.

I disagree. We've seen this game before. Boldin is going to be 36 for most of next season. That's the age Reggie Wayne would have been last year.

For additional context Larry Fitzgerald is going to be 33 in 2016 and Randy Moss is going to be 39. Chad Johnson 85 was 33 his year in NE. Your worst case scenario is he retires in pre-season and your absolute best case scenario is Terrell Owens' last year or so. Realistically he's going to offer little. Bring on Sanu or Matthews.

And even if Boldin is ok this year the chances of him being good in 2017 are low. You want to try and add guys who will be contributors for 2016-2018 and beyond, especially with Amendola and Edelman getting older.

I think you're right that realistically Boldin offers little, but realistically Sanu offers little, too. He played 16 games last year and couldn't even crack the 400-yard mark, and that was on a decent offense with a decent QB and good coaching. I don't think he can beat man coverage, it's not clear he can play outside, and he's not as much of a red zone threat as his size would indicate. When injuries pressed him into a bigger role in 2014, the Cincinnati offense sputtered.

Matthews is a lot more intriguing to me - he's coming off a season that's probably better than anything Sanu has ever done, and in worse circumstances.

The team's number 1 need is a Tracy White/Eric Alexander type small LB who can play special teams and randomly start a single playoff game. If they don't walk away with that at the start of free agency we're hosed.

FAKE EDIT: YES RAMON HUBER!!!!!!!!!! Superbowl baby.

Mirrors an article I recently wrote for ITP: http://insidethepylon.com/nfl/front-office/2016/02/22/nfl-salary-cap-management/

Basically, the worst teams don't have any draft picks worth extending, so they have a ton of cap space, so they spend a bunch in free agency. The only way to break the cycle is to draft well (which Oakland, Jacksonville, Tampa Bay may finally be doing).
The Eagles should never be allowed to sign a Cornerback again. Jesus...Maxwell Namandi etc...

Miami at the top is both predictable and hilarious.

A player that could use a patented Patriots pick-up is WR Jeremy Kerley. Just finished his 5th season, "only" 27. Just cut by the Jets.

He's coming off of a 4-year, steady downhill in numbers all across. However, I think it's in part due to scheme than a simple decline in his skill set. He could be a slot insurance against Edelman/Amendola during camp with a decent chance to make the roster as a backup WR/PR (returned a career- high 48 punts last year).

Apologies for a bit of a non sequitur, but after reading SSF's above post I was just doing some research before posting some thoughts about the Patriots and their reliance on slot-type receivers as opposed to true wide-outs, and I found that Brandon Lloyd started 15 games and was 2nd on the team in receiving yard in 2012, at close to one thousand yds. All the drinking must have killed those memory cells but I had completely forgotten about that guy.

Okay, now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

So, I looked at recent season numbers for receiving yards for non-Welker/Edelman/Amendola/TE yards in a season. It's important to note that, of course, when you have the best TE and "slot-type" receivers (though I think of W/E/A, and especially Edelman, as much more than a "slot" WR, but anyway), the other guys are going to have lesser numbers. Anyway, Moss's last great season was 2009. Since then, here are the WR who have had over 400 yards receiving in a season for the Patriots, other than TEs and the WRs mentioned above.

2015: LaFell, 515 yards
2014: LaFell, 953
2013: Dobson, 519; Thompkins 466
2012: Lloyd, 911
2011: Branch, 702
2010: Branch, 706; Tate, 432

I'm not sure what my point is, but after looking at the numbers it seems that we (or, at least, I) tend to focus on the Patriots' TEs and slot-y receivers because that is their strength, but to my mild surprise it seems that they have usually had decent production throwing to a traditional wide out as a complement to their main passing attack style as well.

Okay, this post probably doesn't belong here but I'm hitting "Reply to Thread" anyway.

A RB I'd be interested in kicking the tires on is Khiry Robinson. He was considered the best all-around back in NO a couple years ago but that was before Mark Ingram's resurgence.
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000358958/article/making-the-leap-no-19-saints-khiry-robinson

He wasn't invited to the combine during his draft year but did post a 6.88 3 cone at his pro-day which would put him in the top handful. At 6' 220 he could give NE a Ridley like performance with better ball control (1 Fumble in 186 carries) and he can catch the ball a little though he won't be replacing Dion Lewis in that role.

NO didn't even extend a tender but that could be due to him coming off injury and the fact they have a stable of backs already. With so little mileage thus far he could provide big upside at little cost. Essentially Cory Ivory 2.0.

That's kind of why Boldin intrigues me. I don't envision him picking up tons of yards, but I could see him as a huge red zone target who compliments the tight end, slot receivers and running back we have. I imagine in the red zone he won't have to run complicated routes and be especially fast. Break to a corner and jump higher than everyone else.

Per Schefty:
@AdamSchefter Buffalo RFA WR Chris Hogan visiting NE today, per league source. Pats could sign him to offer sheet that Bills would have 5 days to match.
Jokes about short White slot guys aside, would love to have 7/11 in Pats uni. I'm not convinced Edelman will play all 16 in 2016.

Edit: I'm less convinced Rexy will let one of his RFAs sign with the Pats. Most likely will match whatever BB offers.

That's true, Payrod and Mugsy, but there's a danger in conflating all media observations. When last season ended, it was pretty apparent that the Pats needed to upgrade RB and WR. They probably need another TE. The offensive line is another need.

After one day of FA, many of the targets at WR and RB are off the board. Nothing has happened with TE or the line. We are lead to believe that the Pats have inquired and bid on candidates at WR and possibly RB.

It remains true that Bill has almost always been very restrained in the early days of FA and has, of course, been wildly successful. So no one should remotely panic. But it's also true that he needs to address those areas, so far has not, the pool of alternatives is dwindling and it's something to watch. People saying that without wetting their pants have a point, albeit one that we should have confidence that Bill will address.

And let's also remember that he has not always surrounded Tom with enough talent at WR. The 2006 and 2013 receiver crews were wanting, so again, it's not as if everyone pointing out that they need to cover these needs has no historical basis for potential worry. Clearly, after just one day of free agency, it's extremely premature. But it's something to watch and note, and not everyone doing so is a ninny.

More on Hogan, apparently he can be a lefty backup punter!
Mike Rodak @mikerodak
A lefty punter too. Belichick loves those. Also a former lacrosse player. Belichick also loves those. twitter.com/viccarucci/sta…
Vic Carucci @viccarucci
How thoroughly have the #Patriots researched #Bills RFA WR Chris Hogan? Bill Belichick likes that he could be a backup punter. Honest!
And he played lacrosse!
MarkDanielsPJ
Chris Hogan played lacrosse in college so there's one reason why Belichick likes him.
And 6'1! (didn't know he was over 6').

6'1 220. thats a pretty good size receiver.
Or a backup "QB" to Edelman, per @chatham58
I'm guessin' WR Chris Hogan solidified a #Patriots free agency visit when he threw a pass to QB Tyrod Taylor http://www.buffalobills.com/video/videos/HIGHLIGHT-Chris-Hogan-pass-to-Tyrod-Taylor
This is the stage where I get irrationally excited, but Doug Kyed tweets:
@dougkyed
In 2015*:
Mohamed Sanu: 33 catches, 394 yards, 0 TDs
Chris Hogan: 36 catches, 450 yards, 2 TDs

Sure, the 2006 and 2013 receiving corps were weak, but they still went 12-4 both years, making it to (close) AFCCGs and finishing with an above-average offense each time (3rd in points, 7th in yards in 2013; 7th and 11th in 2006). You can't be good everywhere and Brady and a good defense can cover up for a lot of deficiencies.

There's no doubt that's true. But a lot of that goes to just how great Tom Brady is. I think it's reasonable to believe that had the receiving weapons in both seasons been better (and I get it, that has implications for other positions in a salary cap environment), the Pats' chances of winning the SB would have been higher, perhaps materially. The thought of Reche Caldwell as the number one receiver still gives me the willies.

My point is only that not every media person talking about the Pats needs and that some of the candidates have been snapped up is fairly called a mediot who is just spouting of the chicken little talking points.

The Pats need to "upgrade" at running back? Is this a thing people think?

I'm very skeptical that Lewis will come back and be the player he was for the first half of last year. But some combination of Blount, Lewis, White, and random free agent (Cunningham, Robinson, Anderson) will be sufficient. I mean, were people looking at the team last year and thinking one of their main problems was the skill/ability of their running backs?

@PFTCommenter Hogan Amendola& Edelmen would be like having a coach, a coaches son, & a coaches sons dad on the field all at once
@BillSimmons I want the Pats to sign Chris Hogan just so I can spend the weekend figuring out a nickname for Edelman/Amendola/Hogan.

The short answer would be yes. Sure, the OL is just as responsible for not having a running game, but you can't deny that it wasn't a problem after Lewis went out.

Call me crazy, but if Sanu is going to command 7 million, I am ecstatic the Pats stayed out of that WR mess. And I still think there are good options at RB. But the place I am terrified and disappointed is at OL. Brady is now at an age where he is one unfortunate hit away from the possibility of forced retirement. The guy can turn an orange pylon into an effective WR if he has the TIME to do so. Spend, trade, whatever, but we have got to protect this guy. I dont think we are getting a difference making OL at the bottom of round 2.

If they do sign Hogan, my contribution to the trio's nickname is Hogamelman. Think "gamel" like "camel."

I'd sign Hogan and try to get Boldin on the cheap and then draft a TE and some OLine help.

Yeah, I mean, the main difference between the 2013, 2014, and 2015 offenses were injuries, particularly that Gronk was full go the whole season in 2014. Talent available so far is pretty meh and signed for a lot of money.

I don't really rate RB that high on the list of free agent needs. They need to sign someone to go with Lewis and White and maybe a draft pick, but I expect it will be a scrap heap guy.
