For any hockey fans out there, Felger and Mazz have talked hockey for really the entire past hour.

It is clear that Felger is actually a pretty passionate hockey fan and really cares about how the Bruins do. He really comes off as a fan when talking about the sport, which is great to hear.

This was good radio and I say that as someone who doesn't even like the Bruins and roots for a different team entirely.

That having been said, Felger needs to like... learn more about the game. Understand the draft and draft lottery, understand how deep the 2010 draft really is, understand how the friggin salary cap works.

I thought his point was just that it's time for the Bruins to "go for it." He said they've been building towards this for 2 years and it's time to put some of their chips in one pile.

Now I agree that if the Bruins continue to not put it together, then holding off on trading top picks would be wise, but Felger came across as a sincere fan and though everything he said wasn't totally accurate, I thought it was refreshing listening to somebody talk about something with passion.

Now maybe that's a sad commentary on the overall state of sports talk radio, but still, this program (especially Felger) continues to be the most enjoyable show in the Boston market.

The Bruins are currently sitting at 7th in the conference, a far cry from last year, which many people claimed was going to be a springboard for this year.

Hardly.

Great, they're sitting pretty in the 2010 draft, so the future looks bright.

It's looked bright since 1972; 38 years of wait til next year has gotten old.

Oh I understood his point but what he wants to do is cutting off your nose to spite your face. Trading that Toronto pick for something other than a tangible asset you have on your team for the next 5 years is nuts, absolute abject stupidity. Now packing the Bruins own pick and something from 2011 or something like Mazz was suggesting... thats a good idea, an obvious move. But Felger clearly didn't understand how valuable a chance to land Taylor Hall or Cam Fowler actually is.

Also Felger's comments on the salary cap showed a lack of knowledge on how it works and that was annoying since it seems like everytime we hear about a hockey player's contract, you hear about the AAV... so one would think the sports show host should know that it doesn't matter what Tim Thomas makes this year and it doesn't matter what Kessel makes this year... their AAV is all that matters when you're talking about trying to fit them both under the cap.

All that said, it was great to hear sports talk radio talk about the NHL. Like I said, I'm not even a Bruins fan but I think their current situation with the picks and bad contracts they have makes for a lot of good and engaging discussion about where to go from here.

That's Felger's only point ever. He uses the same thing with the Red Sox and the Patriots. It's his shtick lately (they have the money, they should spend it).

Hopefully Mazz reads the link Sykedoc put on the main board about Bay. He may not agree with the Sox decision, but he can now see the reasoning behind it.

I can't listen but Mazz won't care. He was talking about "some kind of injury" for weeks, his take is the same as Felgers. It drives me nuts.

I doubt that changes his mind. He'll probably label it as spin by the FO reacting to all the backlash over not signing Bay. Felger and Mazz are fairly one note. If the local teams aren't winning championships every year, the FO is inept because they refuse to spend money on "elite" players. It's amazing how two people with as little practical knowledge about sports as these two can get so far in sports media. I guess all you really have to do is scream into a microphone when things aren't going well and that's enough for most people.

The newest theory from Felger (and GREEESHHHHH) is after having to pay Renteria, Lugo, and Lowell to go away, maybe John Henry offered Theo an ultimatum and told him "one more bad contract and you're gone." According to Felger, that would explain why Theo required injury protection with Bay and Lackey. Felger puts the blame on Henry and says, "if Bay isn't producing in that 4th year, who cares. There's no cap and I'm sure John Henry can still afford shrimp cocktail."

LOL

How dumb is that? If that were the case, and Theo was worried about being fired, he would not have signed Lackey at all.

It's throwing crap against the wall hour on Felger and Mazz!

I seriously don't know how anybody listens to these clowns. I listen to Toucher & Rich in the mornings so when I get in the car to go home the radio is still on 98.5. Everyday in the time period from when I turn the key to when I change the station or switch to mp3 player I always hear something retarded coming out of their mouths.

Today with Felger it was something like "the Pats and Red Sox would rather win at the negotiating table than on the field!"

And could they find two guys with weirder voices to put on radio?

That sounds a lot like what the mets have done over the last few years...and that was before they signed bay.

Does anyone want to be like the mets?

Felger really annoyed me and Tanguay on Sports Tonight on Wednesday after the Celtics game.

Felger was talking about Big Baby cussing at the fan and how disgusted he was, and said if KG was around that it would have never happened.

Tanguay immediatly called him out on this and said, "KG, you mean the biggest trash talker in the league? One of the guys with the dirtiest mouths in the league?"

It was a really bad look for Felger, and throws a ton of evidence towards the argument that he just throws stuff against the wall and hopes it sticks.

Well, the only reason KG is the biggest trash-talker in the league is that Bird and Jordan are both retired. Big difference between KG trash-talking opponents on the court (and backing it up) and Big Baby telling a fan to suck his dick. Felger's point stands. Tanguay is an idiot.

I'm kind of sick of the theme of 98.5, and it even extends to that Damon guy at night.

Really entertaining show today.

The Tom Jackson clip was one of the funniest things I've heard in a long time...and the Vikings' commentator screaming about the interception was great too.

Hilarious stuff.

Agreed. Except this one stung a little bit: "That's the thing about Grady Little. He's not afraid to let his ace pitcher try to get one more out. Gotta respect that."

I actually read some of these on twitter (tag: #ESPNFavreRulesForAll). There's also a couple sites that have collected the best: NBC sports - If Brett Favre Rules Applied to Baseball (read the comments).

As mentioned, I really like it when Felger talks hockey, as he comes across as a true fan. It's good to see that this show isn't afraid to make hockey a regular topic of conversation. That's definitely an alternative.

I didn't mean to set this off.

Rather, I was listening, heard the Tebow discussion, and honestly wasn't sure if it was sincere or tongue-in-cheek or deliberately provocative. Any thoughts? Cause if Felger meant it, it's pretty weak with his football background. Even Mazz seems to know better.

No, Felger seems pretty sincere.

His point is that Tebow is a "football player," and has heart. He says the Pats have missed in the 2nd rounds in recent years, drafting failed "athletes" (Chad Jackson, Laurence Maroney, Wheatley, etc). He would rather have Tebow over those guys, because Tebow has talent. Patriots could use him in a "wild cat" type package.

I think Tebow is intriguing, but definitely not for the 2nd round. Still though, because Felger believes it, I don't find the point annoying.

Then again, I am a total fanboy for this show and think it's the most entertaining sports talk show in the market right now. I have fun when I listen. The discussion isn't flawless and the analysis isn't always spot-on. But it's fun. That's why I like it.

In there
Felger has his own ideas and isn't afraid to defend them. That's one of the things I've always liked about him. Being unafraid to probe an idea, no matter how stupid he may come across, is a virtue of Felger's. He has no qualms about admitting he was wrong, either.

I'll take that, every day of the week, over those unthinking slugs on the other station.

Right, he did today.

Opened up an hour by stating, "I was wrong about the package to trade for Ilya Kovalchuck. Those top 5 picks are very valuable, almost a lock to produce right away."

When was the last time anybody else in sports talk radio admitted that a previous opinion of there's was wrong, without throwing in a "that's not what I really said," or "that's not what I meant," etc.

As you said, I find Felger's ability to correct himself refreshing.

I said it before upthread, but not quite in these words, if you don't like the show, or Felger, or Mazz, don't listen to the show, or Felgy and Mazz. Why the fuck do you waste your time!!!! I know who was on The Big Show today. Did you enjoy your time with Butch Stearns and that wiseguy, fratboy Tom E. Curran? I was driving to work on the Mass Pike and tuned into the small show during a TSH break and heard the voice of that dope Stearns and that fresh fuck Curran. I didn't waste any time turning back, listening to some lawyer tell me how to get out from under water on my mortgage. Jesus Christ Almighty.

Your choices tonight were Felger and Mazz or Stearns, Tom E Curran, and someone else I forget. As annoying as Felger can get sometimes with kooky ideas, it doesn't come close to the stupidity displayed by Stearns when he is in the big chair.

Here's the problem. If this was for shits and giggles -- "The Pats need a 'character' implant" -- fine. (I happen to agree with him that the Pats have lost their "identity", for want of a better term).

But the notion that Tebow should come in to "push" Brady because Hoyer cannot is preposterous. Hoyer can play QB in the NFL now, at least in a spot role. Tebow cannot.

The deficiency cited by Felger, taking snaps under center, is the very least of Tebow's problems and fixable. The much bigger ones are (i) accuracy and (ii) having a delivery that resembles Dice-K's. Combine those two, and you're dead. That "the Pats are in the shotgun 90% of the time anyway" provides no answer. This isn't one guy's opinion; it's the overwhelming majority opinion of guys whose livelihoods depend on evaluating these things.

Having covered the Patriots for what -- 9 years? -- Felger should know this. So he either checks his expertise at the door for 4 hours in the afternoon (because this is entertainment only) or has become unimaginably dumb in a hurry.

Albert Breer was on Toucher and Rich this morning and he basically said that it is the consensus of the scouts he interviewed in Mobile that Tim Tebow has no hope of playing QB in the NFL. What I found more interesting was Breer's comment that there is a large swath of reporters that for some reason protect Tebow by not criticizing him or even analyzing him on the same plane as other prospects. He asked rhetorically why media scribes didn't hesitate to note that neither former Nebraska QB Eric Crouch nor Missouri QB Brad Smith were QB prospects at all, yet they do not make the same observation about Tebow. He didn't understand why they were "protecting" Tebow. Protecting him from what, he couldn't fathom.

Want to give these guys a chance, but Felger is beating Tebow like a mule again. Against all reason. Felger has become Captain Intangibles.

EDIT -- This is the guy who Felger would have you believe would "goose Brady":

QUOTE
He has his orange Florida helmet and a pair of white Gator pants with the Nike swoosh torn off to accommodate game sponsor Under Armour. He’s competitive. He’s trying.

Publicly, the NFL people here will say that’s about as much as is certain about this accomplished yet wildly enigmatic pro prospect.

But privately, another tune is being sung about the Heisman Trophy-winning, two-time national champion quarterback.

The NFL people seem to see what everyone else in Mobile has seen, and it is not what the legions of Gator fans who’ve attended these workouts want to hear.

“I actually don’t think he’s that hard to evaluate at all,’’ said a high-ranking college scout for an NFC team. “To me, he’s just not a very good quarterback prospect. Now, if you want to rework his mechanics, his release, try to improve his accuracy, then you see a guy with this big frame that can throw.

“He’s a big-time project, no doubt.’’

Just a note:

Felger and Mazz will be on "radio row" next week in Miami.

I think that could be great, as I find a lot of the off-the-cuff (non-sports) remarks the best part about this show. I think we'll get a lot of them down there.

And at the least, it will take Felger off this Tebow thing. I didn't mind it yesterday, but now he's so over-the-top that one has to think it's a joke. Mazz and Gasper tore him down last hour and he just got more and more outlandish in his argument.

But yeah, anyway, I can't wait for next week. I think we'll hear some hilarious stuff.
