Let's go!

Nice service from Turner to get the ball upfield, then into the mix-ah.

Their keeper is a bit more in the game than Turner has really been. Not sure Turner has a save tonight. Could use a couple here.

This game was a good experience for the B team. They were the better team, but still played sloppy enough and were not clinical enough so that they easily could have lost.

Ultimately the stakes are extremely low for the USMNT in this tournament, but I'm glad this group will get more worthwhile tests. Panama next on Wednesday. Callaghan will need to make a few changes, I think, both because of fatigue and because I'm not sure the front three is the right mix.

Not a great game against a bad Canadian team, and not many good player performances, but getting the win in a knockout game is always nice. Turner getting penalty experience and doing well is a plus.

I don’t understand the starting lineup with two traditional wingers and Jesus Ferreira as the 9. It always going to be a game with a lot of crosses coming in, which is not where you want Ferreira. I thought the USMNT looked better in attack when Vazquez came on. That’s not to say he’s better than Ferreira, but just that the way the game was being played, Vazquez was the better fit.

The answer is it’s a B team, plus Matt Turner.
I had a friend convince me that this is a C team. His reasoning was that if we call this Canada team a B team then the US brought a C team. If the World Cup started today, 10-15 of the Canadian GC roster would go to the World Cup, mostly off the bench. That’s a B team. Only 2-3 US Gold Cup players would be on the World Cup roster. That’s a C team. A US squad equivalent to Canada’s would have players like Pepi, LDLT, Scally, Aaronson and so on. It’s all semantics though.

Here's a depth-chart view of the US roster. I disagree with some of these rankings, but not by much, and they even out anyway. If you think a B-team is the second XI you'd put out there, like everyone except your first-choice XI, then this is a C / D team. If you think a B-team is the team you'd build if your first-choice 23-man roster were unavailable, then it's a B-team with some C-team elements (Cowell, Miazga, etc).

Now, I think a few players have shown that this chart underrates them considerably: Busio, Jones, Vazquez, Sands, even Neal. But at the same time, Gressel started over Cowell and Morris last night, Tolkin hasn't been seen in a bit, we substituted both our centerbacks last night instead of using subs for attacking options, etc.

It was an instant classic if you start watching at minute 80.

The first 80 minutes though, whoof.

Turner Classic!

I watched last night from minute 30-85. The highlights I just watched literally started at minute 86. At least I feel refreshed!

Ferreira at 7th on the forward depth chart. Lol. Never change, Justin Moran.

There are a few wild numbers on there so it's not really worth trying to reconstruct, but out of morbid curiosity

1. Flo
2. Pepi
3. Sargent
4. Wright (arguable, but banging in goals in a mid-low level Euro league definitely gets you ahead of Jesus on a "put Jesus 7th" person's list)

I'm very confused after that. Dike, who I am high on but is injured and has only performed for the US at all against minnows as well? Vazquez is listed as 8th, so not him. Assuming he puts Dike up there anyways, is there an even semi-logical striker I am missing, or is he sneaking an out of position player in, or can he not count?

I'm still wondering if this is even one list or if there's a "Plan A" striker list and a "Lump it to the big man" striker list.

Right I mean the value to me is the concept, the way of thinking about and assessing the GC roster, much moreso than the individual ratings.

Moran was the voice of reason on the adding of Yueill to the roster, on a "at this point in the depth chart, who gives a fuck" argument, which was remarkably reasonable by his standards.

Point is, other than Turner and Miles, nobody on the GC roster would likely be on the Copa America roster right now if everyone were healthy. Whether you'd call that a B or C team is a definition question.

So we meet again, this time for a spot in the finals. Panama vs USA.

We still have a bitter taste in our mouths when CONCACAF and Co basically fixed another Panama semifinal (vs Mexico). Looks like a lot of young players will make their mark and Christiansen is the first HC we have retained after a WC cycle so I have good fellings about La Marea Roja.

Seems like lots of positives last night for some younger kids. Cowell come on and made a big impact. Ferreira got some run in weird positions. Hopefully, the whole team learned a valuable lesson about keeping your hands down in the box. They all showed resilience and got some confidence. Plus, they get another game. Doesn't undo how they came out, but this kind of seems like a gravy tournament.

That stupid thing with neither team wanting to back up to the line until the other did is some juvenile crap, but also kind of team building.

Conceding penalties stinks, but in knockout games, it can be a real advantage for a keeper to get to see a guy twice.
