Copa Oro 2023: Better than a Non-league Summer Friendly, Sort of

We've discussed the Gold Cup in desultory fashion in the general USMNT thread, but it merits its own thread, kind of.

Some of the competition has actually been quite fun. But nobody does minnows the way CONCACAF does minnows.

Coming up tonight: Panama vs. Martinique, which is so lacking in stand-alone legitimacy that it can't play FIFA events. CONCACAF lets it play in CONCACAF events, I guess it's a kindness.

Some of Martinique's players play in the French and Swiss second and third tiers. Others play in Martinique.

Panama, of course, has passionate backers, here and elsewhere. Its players ply their trades in leagues on four continents. Respectable FIFA ranking of 57, coming off a 4th place Nations League finish.

Game is at beautiful Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, and there is NO ONE there. No. One.

Guess I'll slide over to this thread. 1-0 to the US early on.

That should not be an own goal.. That gives Ferreira 13 goals in 21 games for the USMNT.

He's now one goal from being top 15 all-time for USMNT.

Glad they didn’t whistle a penalty there.

Haitians look like the better side so far.

St. Louis
A Mexican player hit a Qatari with a spinning backhand straight out of UFC and received a yellow card on review. (Even better, a Qatar assistant coach was red carded.)

On so many levels, the lack of accountability for Mexico in CONCACAF continues to be abhorrent.

Edit: And perhaps the loudest homophobic chant yet. Nothing done.

So, the US gets the second place team in group D, correct? Which as it looks now will likely be Canada.
Yes, assuming the Fighting Maple Leafs defeat Cuba and don't lose out on a 3-way tiebreaker if the other game ends in a draw. If they beat Cuba by 2 or more they are safe.

The Guatemala-Guadeloupe game had a better atmosphere than any Euro 2020 match.

P.S. I’m drunk.

Canada sneak through on the strength of a 4-2 win over a depleted Cuba squad. The dropoff in talent after their top 5 or 6 players is striking and I’d be severely disappointed if the US loses to our northern neighbors. They’re not very good.
