If you're volunteering you can pretty much limit yourself to whatever days you want. The registration page allows you to select 1st, 2nd, and 3rd committee choices, and the days you are able to work. I don't know this for sure but you probably improve your chances of being selected for your top choice if you can work multiple days - it gives them scheduling flexibility.Leon Trotsky said:I'm going on Friday as well, planning to go either way early or way late. What would be better?
Also curious about volunteering for those that have done it. Do you have to do all four days, or just one or two?
Some of the committees are very difficult to get into, though, as they give priority to return volunteers. In fact, my missing this year' event likely will bump me out of the walking scorer's group, which is the toughest to get into based on its popularity (you get out and walk with the players on the course and keep score on a hand-held device, plus you can typically get the players' autographs and/or balls, gloves, hats). Another is the Standard Bearers, although they tend to assign these positions to the teenagers. But the committees range far and wide: parking assistance, hospitality tents, crowd control, fairway spotters, distance markers (using hand-held eye-safe laser to mark and record GPS positions for driving distance).
It's a great experience. But note that there is a fee for your "volunteer experience". The last few years it's been $90, which gives you a number of quality Deutsche-logo clothing items (polo shirts, rain jacket, hat), breakfast at the Blue Crew tent, lunch vouchers for the days you actually work, and event passes (they used to give an all-event pass but recently reduced it to 2 days), although they also provide free weeklong parking, whether you're working a particular day or not.
Edit: I would add, they are probably still looking for volunteers on some of the committees for this year, but if you want to improve your chances for getting into the one you really want, go the the volunteer page fpr next year's event as soon as it opens after the close of this years' tournament. This year's Volunteer and Registration site is here.
