Also curious about volunteering for those that have done it. Do you have to do all four days, or just one or two?
If you're volunteering you can pretty much limit yourself to whatever days you want.  The registration page allows you to select 1st, 2nd, and 3rd committee choices, and the days you are able to work.  I don't know this for sure but you probably improve your chances of being selected for your top choice if you can work multiple days - it gives them scheduling flexibility.

Some of the committees are very difficult to get into, though, as they give priority to return volunteers.  In fact, my missing this year' event likely will bump me out of the walking scorer's group, which is the toughest to get into based on its popularity (you get out and walk with the players on the course and keep score on a hand-held device, plus you can typically get the players' autographs and/or balls, gloves, hats).  Another is the Standard Bearers, although they tend to assign these positions to the teenagers.  But the committees range far and wide: parking assistance, hospitality tents, crowd control, fairway spotters, distance markers (using hand-held eye-safe laser to mark and record GPS positions for driving distance).

It's a great experience.  But note that there is a fee for your "volunteer experience".  The last few years it's been $90, which gives you a number of quality Deutsche-logo clothing items (polo shirts, rain jacket, hat), breakfast at the Blue Crew tent, lunch vouchers for the days you actually work, and event passes (they used to give an all-event pass but recently reduced it to 2 days), although they also provide free weeklong parking, whether you're working a particular day or not.

Edit: I would add, they are probably still looking for volunteers on some of the committees for this year, but if you want to improve your chances for getting into the one you really want, go the the volunteer page fpr next year's event as soon as it opens after the close of this years' tournament.  This year's Volunteer and Registration site is here.

The nice thing about Friday is the crowds will be lite.  In the past I've gotten there pretty early and started on the second tee.  That way you can see all of the pros unleash the driver from 4 feet away.  Then I move to a par 3 green and watch the approach shots.  I also like camping out on the Par 4 where they have to carry it 250 or so to the fairway through the shoot (I forget which number).  Sometimes they'll stray one and you can get pretty close up.

You're probably talking about either #6, #12, or #13, each of which are lined tightly by trees both both sides.  On the 6th and 12th, the Championship tee is made even tougher by typically tucking it on the far left and forcing the players to play a draw or skirt the tree line.  The 13th usually is placed just the opposite, to the right, forcing a power fade or skirting on the right.

Fingers crossed that Rob hangs on to get his Tour card. Would be a cool story, thanks to DoTB.

It has been fun to follow him.  I'm pulling for Varner big time too.  The challenge is that you are fighting the guys from 25-32 and playing better than decent still might not be enough.

Edit:  Rodgers is guaranteed his card, so he isn't going anywhere, but that doesn't open up an additional spot.

i'm sorry but maybe the golf channel and pgatourlive could communicate a little more because the featured groups on pgatourlive is essentially the entire golf channel coverage....show some different players for pete sake

That was my understanding of what the service was. Essentially you can get the Golf Network coverage earlier than when they go on air. Once live TV coverage comes on, the pgatourlive is useless. I question how hard it would be to have camera coverage on all 18 holes so you can pick which hole you would like to watch or follow your own group. Am I talking crazy or should this not be that hard.

Oppenheim got boned on 11, having to take an unplayable up against a tree after failing to get a ruling for relief. Bounced back with a birdie but now outside the cut line and outside the top 25 after making double on 15.

Freddy, what was your opinion on that ruling?  You're the resident rules guy here, aren't you?  I was on the phone all night with his brother, and we still couldn't figure out why he wouldn't get relief.  Dicky Pride even came over and offered his thoughts and backed up Rob.  And of course, he misses the cut by 1.

Thankfully, he's not dead yet.  He came in this week at 24 on the money list, and while he's projected to finish 27, that changes a LOT over the weekend.  Basically, if 1 guy that is ahead of him on the money list can jump up and finish 1st or 2nd this week, he'll have a good chance of getting in.  That's the key.  The guys that are ahead of him going into this week have to light it up this weekend.  Realistically, someone outside the top 25 right now has to finish in the top 5 to move into the top 25, and even more likely finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd to move past Rob.  Right now, all three of those spots are held by guys outside the top 25, which is why Rob is projected 27th, but if a couple of them falter, and a guy ahead of Rob on the money list now finishes in the top 3, Rob will probably be ok.

I've been holding my breath saying this is going to be the biggest gut punch ever, since his win 8 weeks ago, and sure enough, here it is.   If he missed 10 cuts this year, he probably missed 9 of them by one shot, and I can already feel a 26th place money list finish coming.

Leithbones is the true rules expert, but check this out. This is an image from the 2014 link that is somewhat analogous to the situation (that guy's site is great):

The question basically comes down to a subjective assessment of whether it is reasonable that someone would take an unnatural stance, but one that is not clearly impracticable, to get out of the situation with a reasonable certainty of success so that they could play a natural shot for their next.  If there is any doubt, relief is not to be given.  That is where the official came down, I would likely have disagreed having seen it.

Edit:  Given the circumstances, I might even have played two balls if I were Rob and let the tournament committee sort it out afterward, but then again that may have made it more challenging to stay focused for the remaining seven holes.

Yes. "Earlier in the round on 3" meant earlier today on the 3rd hole.

He almost holed out on 17 for eagle too.

Faldo just said it was 67,000,000 to 1 odds of making 2 in one day.  3rd time it's happened on Tour, first time since 2006 or something.

Looks like Day is going to cruise to his 2nd straight win. 4 shots clear of Stenson on the back 9 here.

May have spoke too soon. Stenson birdied 13 and 14 to cut it to 2 and Day is in some trouble off the tee on 13.

Despite the story that was Jordan Speith and his ascension early in the year, we were still treated to awesome finishes week after week. Now Jason Day has stepped in and started to utterly dominate. It's certainly different than one-shot wins and sudden death playoffs but it's still fun to watch.
22 straight rounds under par for Day now.
If he keeps this up, his son is going to get more camera time than the rest of the field during these playoffs

There are scenarios where Day can become world #1 with a win this week. Spieth is playing at Norton, but I haven't heard anything about Rory.

POTY could be an interesting debate if Day wins 1 or 2 more and the $10 million. I still think it would be Spieth's, but it'd be a fun debate. Right now they both have 4 wins, but Spieth's 1, 1, T4, 2 major finishes this year is going to be hard for Day to overcome. If Day can close with something like 4 wins in his last 6 starts plus the TC, he's in the conversation.

Master + US Open trumps PGA plus anything else unless you overthink it.

Most scenarios, I would think. If day wins, his OWGR average would be up over 12.65. By my rough calculations, Rory would need at least a tie for second (probably no more than two-way), and Spieth might be able to get it done with a solo third.

He missed it by 50k. 50 freaking thousand dollars kept him off the tour. That's heartbreaking.

Hopefully he keeps grinding and makes it on, I'm rooting for him.

Worse, it was less than $1000...literally a shot here or there.

25 Harold Varner III   $161,102
26 Rob Oppenheim  $160,159

Really pulling for him in these last four events.

I may be wrong, but I don't think he's ever worked a broadcast for NBC. He has always been a CBS guy, but it is probably safe to assume he lands at NBC given their relationship with the Golf Channel and Feherty's show.

Plus, NBC has the Ryder Cup.  Feherty + Ryder Cup is a gigantic win.  That is, assuming he can get a word in past Johnny Miller.  NBC I think is the only choice with his already existing Golf Channel tie ins.  If he goes to Fox, he'll only do like three tournaments a year.

Oh, it's so much worse than even that.  At the last tournament, the cut line was -2.  Rob finished -1, and would have been -2 had they given him the relief on the cart path, instead of making him take an unplayable. 66 guys finished at -2 after the 2nd round.  On the Web, it's 65 and ties that make the cut, so if one guy had finished -1 instead of -2, Rob would have made the cut.   Did I mention the last guy to get into the clubhouse at -2 was Harold Varner, who made a 25 foot putt on the 18th hole to finish at -2, and keep the cut line there, and keep Rob out.  Varner, as your post shows, by virtue of just making the cut, jumped over Rob and finished 25th, and Rob 26th.

If Rob had just made the cut, he would have made enough money to get passed Patrick Rodgers, who didn't play in the tournament, too.  So, he would have had plenty of breathing room.  Literally, if one thing, just one thing, in a million different spots, had broken the right way, Rob would be on Tour.  Not just  this past week, but the past 8 weeks since he won that tournament, it seems like every single bad break that could have gone against him went against him.

I was talking to him the other day via text, and he seems in good spirits.  Thankfully, he already has guaranteed full status on the Web next year, so in reality, there is very little pressure on him heading into the final four playoff events, whereas in previous years, he hasn't been in that kind of a position.  Maybe with the pressure off, he'll go out and get himself a top 5 in one of these tournaments and get himself onto the Tour via the 25 cards handed out following the playoffs to the 25 highest finishers who don't already have cards.  The one thing I cannot figure out is if they just count the money earned during the 4 playoff events, or if they combine it with the regular season earnings.  Everywhere I look, I feel like I get a different answer, or something that is even more confusing.  I don't know  how they would do a combination, when the guys ranked 125-200 in Fedex Cup points this year are also in the Web Finals, and obviously, most of them didn't earn any money in Web events this year, so that would work against them, but I know there was some controversy about it last year, and I can't figure out what the rule is now.

Cumulative money in the four events determines the 25 cards, but regular season money is added to the cumulative finals money to determine priority ranking.  A guy in the comments section of this posted this:

a. The 25 leading regular-season earners carry their earnings into the Finals; they are competing among themselves for their priority ranking.
b. All the other players in the Finals are competing for the remaining 25 cards. Only money earned in the Finals counts for these.
c. The two groups are zippered together to determine the initial priority ranking, as seen here: http://www.pgatour.com/webcom/news/2014/08/26/priority-ranking-finals.html
d. The priority ranking for the 50 players changes 6 times during the PGA Tour season, except for the following players:
i. The leading Regular+Finals money winner
ii. The leading money winner during the Finals (who may be one of the top 25 from the Regular Season)
iii. Any players who won three times during the season (including the Finals)
Such players are exempt from the re-order.

Meanwhile, Ryan Moore made a 10 on the 2nd hole today. I can do that. He also eagled the driveable par 4 4th. I can't do that.

Stenson has a 2 shot lead over Fowler through 8 today. Matt Jones is 3 back, seems like those 3 are the main contenders down the stretch in Norton. Stenson won here 2 years ago.

Everyone has faded, so we basically get Stenson/Fowler match play for the final 7 holes. Birdie/Bogey exchange on 11 brought Fowler to within 1. Fun finish ahead.
