Holy crap. Hofstra scored what appeared to be the go ahead goal, but it was waved off. Could have been for an illegal pick. Drexel ball with :31 left, and they take a time-out.

EDIT - Nothing doing on the scoreboard, and they'll settle this one in overtime. Winner heads to the NCAAs, loser waits to see if there's a shot in the dark of them getting in ahead of Cornell, who appear to have the edge over both teams overall despite a 10-9 loss to Hofstra head-to-head earlier this season.

A couple of changes in possession and a couple of timeouts but no goals in the first 5:00. They'll move on to the 2nd OT.

Shafer scores again for Drexel, and the Dragons win their first-ever CAA Championship and the NCAA auto-bid, 11-10.

What a fucking game. Hard not to feel awful for Hofstra, which will have a bitch of a time getting into the field as an at-large.

EDIT - Hail to the victors...

If I had to guess at the NCAA seeds (assuming a win by higher seed Harvard at home tomorrow):

1. Loyola MD
2. Duke
3. Syracuse
4. Notre Dame
5. Denver
6. Maryland
7. N. Carolina
8. Virginia
9. Johns Hopkins
10. Harvard
11. Penn
12. Drexel
13. Albany
14. Cornell
15. Bryant
16. Air Force
17. Siena
18. Richmond

First 4 out: Yale, Hofstra, Princeton, Fairfield
Next 4 out: Lehigh, Army, Penn St, Ohio St.

Can't see them leaving Cornell out, as they have a better overall résumé than any of the other at-large candidates.

The one team outside the Top 8 that I'd least want to face if I'm one of the host schools? Albany, without a doubt. Their RPI is low due to conference schedule strength, but they've gone toe-to-toe with the best in the nation this year, losing by just a point at Syracuse, dropping single-point games to both Bryant & Drexel, and coming up short in a tough one at Johns Hopkins. But holy crap, are they explosive.

'Dog, Albany's offensive talent is not matched in the country.  But, they can not play defense.  We are not a very good team, yet we put in a ton of goals on them.  They are dangerous only if they get matched up with a team that is a run-and-gun team as well.  If the opposition can hold the Great Danes to 10-12 goals they will lose.

Cornell is in. Their RPI, Quailty Wins, and Strength of Schedule is better than Hopkins. I think both Harvard and Penn are in no matter what happens today and Hofstra is last team out. My best guess at first round matchups:

Penn Win:
#1 Duke vs (Richmond / Air Force Winner)
#2 Syracuse vs (Bryant / Sienna Winner)
#3 Loyola vs Drexel
#4 Notre Dame vs Albany
#5 Maryland vs Harvard
#6 Penn vs Johns Hopkins
#7 Virginia vs Cornell
#8  North Carolina vs Denver

Harvard Win:
#1 Duke vs (Richmond / Air Force Winner)
#2 Syracuse vs (Bryant / Sienna Winner)
#3 Loyola vs Drexel
#4 Notre Dame vs Albany
#5 Maryland vs Harvard
#6 Virginia vs Cornell
#7 North Carolina vs Johns Hopkins
#8  Penn vs Denver

Guessing who gets in is usually pretty straight forward ever year other than the last team but the seedings are a mess every year. Especially since they only seed the first eight teams and then take travel into consideration. Supposedly the committee base seeding on RPI, QW, and SoS . That's why the seedings for the tournament never match up with the polls. Here is laf from laxpower.com breakdown of the teams their key seeding criteria:

Three Penn turnovers, three Harvard goals. Peter Schwartz nets one unassisted to make it 3-0.

And now Devin Dwyer joins the parade for the Crimson. 4-0, and the Quakers need to get their shit together.

The Quakers have really clamped down on defense, denying penetration and forcing the movement along the perimeter.

Harvard's Brendan Newman takes a 60-second penalty for a cross-check to the head. Penn gets the EMO with 11:45 left in the 3rd.

The Crimson stiffen up their D, nearly forcing the turnover, and the Quakers can't generate anything with the extra man.

Now down to 10:15 left in the quarter.

Jake Gambitsky with a clutch save for Harvard on a Losco rifle, and he clears for a Crimson breakaway. But Penn recovers defensively. Feeney makes yet another incredible save for the Quakers (his 9th today), but Harvard maintains possession approaching 2:00 to play in the 3rd.

EDIT - Make that 10 saves for Feeney, as he stuffs an attacker trying to wrap one around from the left.

EDIT - Wow, 11 stops, and Penn takes over with the ball.

And that'll do it. Penn are the Ivy League champs, 7-5. Bitter loss for the Crimson, getting outscored 7-1 after taking a 4-0 lead.

ESPN's analysts seem to think Hofstra has the edge over Harvard for the final at-large bid, with Cornell getting the other one. Counter-intuitive, but they made some good points. Thing is, they only cited some of the selection metrics and criteria, not all of them as JHU Sox Fan laid out in his excellent post upthread.

Guess we'll have to wait 7 hours to find out.

That was the first time I saw Penn all year and I was hoping for Hopkins to draw them prior to the game now I'm hoping for Maryland. A great face off guy and goalie can get you far in the tournament.

One thing I forgot about is that one of the quarterfinal sites is at Hofstra. The NCAA might want to give them a chance to play at home in quarterfinals and get a bigger gate. I still think Harvard gets in ahead of Hofstra, but I'm not as confident as I was before.

Revised predictions (I was biased and rating Maryland too high after looking at the stats although the committee might do the same):

Delware:
#1 Duke vs (Richmond / Air Force Winner)
#8  North Carolina vs Denver [Denver gets screwed because of SoS and travel considerations]

#4 Penn vs Drexel
#5 Virginia vs Johns Hopkins

Hofstra (Keep open the possibility of Cuse, Albany, and Cornell to play in NY):
#2 Syracuse vs (Bryant / Sienna Winner)
#7 Maryland vs Cornell

#3 Loyola vs Harvard
#6 Notre Dame vs Albany

This is tough to keep the 6 ACC teams and 3 Ivy teams away from each other in the first round and keep the travel down.

8 Virginia vs Johns Hopkins

4 Penn vs Drexel
5 Denver vs North Carolina

3 Loyola MD vs Albany
6 Notre Dame vs Harvard

2 Syracuse vs Siena/Bryant
7 Maryland vs Cornell

* Was a little surprised at first to see UNC that low, essentially a #12. But they had to avoid ACC vs ACC matchups in the first round. This will be their third straight tournament facing each other.

* Penn gets their cross-town neighbors in a battle of Philly.

* Didn't expect Albany to be only a 14, just above the play-in teams.

* Harvard gets the final at-large bid over Hofstra.

Just missed getting all eight games right.

Good on the committee for ranking Denver. They deserve it and can't get enough teams to make it out there to play them to improve their strength of schedule.

Every year I get upset over some of the non ranked teams placement. Most of the time the committee makes decisions based on saving money on travel but I think Albany and Harvard should be switched.

UNC and Albany got screwed but unless all 6 ACC teams got ranked one of them was going to get a team ranked too high in the first round. That being said if UNC can win in Denver they have a good chance of making it to Baltimore.

I don't think the all ACC final four will happen. Loyola should be good enough to make the final four.

Trying to confirm, but it appears the play-in games won't be televised, and will likely be ESPN3/WatchESPN only. Which would suck, if true. ESPNU's listings show softball airing in the 4 pm slot, and in the evening they're re-airing the Chick Fil-A and Russell Athletic Bowls from 4 months ago. I shit you not. As if anyone's going to watch them as part of some ramp-up to the NFL Draft the following night.

I loathe and despise the self-proclaimed WWL.

Bryant wins the first D-I play-in game, 9-8 over Siena. Tucker James, Shane Morell & Colin Dunster scored 2 goals apiece, while Alex Zomerfeld, Dan Sipperly & Cody O'Donnell each found the net once. Each team won 10 face-offs, but Bryant took 6 of 7 in the 4th quarter. The Saints had three solid scoring chances in the final minute, but couldn't convert. It's the end of the line for attacker Colin Clive & midfielder Kyle Curry, Siena's #2 and #5 goal scorers. Gunnar Waldt made 14 saves for the Bulldogs (15-4), who advance to visit 2-seed Syracuse on Sunday at 7:30 pm on ESPNU.

Air Force & Richmond square off at 9 pm.

Division III Results so far. The Lord Jeffs had the only close call of the afternoon, winning by just three in Amherst. All host teams have won except Adrian (MI), which fell to Aurora (IL). Five games just got underway, and another road team is threatening early as 17th-ranked Mary Washington (VA) leads at 7th-ranked Cabrini (PA), 4-0. If that lead holds, Cabrini head coach Steve Colfer will have to wait until next season to gain his 200th career win.

EDIT - Cabrini answers with four straight to tie it up. Endicott (MA leads Keene (NH) 6-4. Lynchburg (VA) is blowing out Sewanee (TN) 11-0. And two heavy favorites are slow out of the gates as #3 Stevenson (MD) and #5 Washington (MD) are both tied 2-2 in the their respective matches. All games now in the 2nd quarter.

EDIT - Cabrini makes it 6 straight to go up 6-4, ultimately building a 9-6 lead before Mary Washington closed to within 9-8 in the final minute, and that's how it ended. Luke Dick's hat trick for MW went for naught. Congrats to Coach Colfer on #200.

EDIT - Keene kept it close throughout, but Endicott wins it 13-10. Lynchburg completed their demolition of Sewanee, 25-4. Washington (MD) finally surged ahead of Eastern (PA) and earned a decisive 13-6 win. Stevenson did the same against Otterbein before rolling to an 18-4 victory, as all the hosts won in the evening games.

The only lower seeded teams I see having a good chance at winning this weekend are Hopkins and UNC. I think UNC would beat Denver on a neutral field, but playing in Denver at high altitude is a huge advantage. I think Hopkins will make a really good game of it down at Klockner, but that place is a house of horrors for Hopkins.I think Albany and Bryant will play well but Loyola and Cuse will pull away at the end.

It's funny that I feel parody is at an all time high in the game at a D1 level, but the matchups aren't really favorable for the unseeded teams this weekend.

Yikes. Parity obviously. I was in a dream-like state and very tired when I wrote that post.
