About a month remains in the regular season, and the cream has been rising to the top the last several weeks. NCAA D-I tournament play begins May 10 leading up to the championship game in Baltimore on May 26. For D-II and D-III, the playoffs start May 7 with both championships on May 25, also in Baltimore.

First, some useful links:

I've also got a LAX twitter list if you want to follow it, though I need to update it a bit (it still includes many lower-division schools I was keeping tabs on during last year's tournaments). In addition, I've put together a realignment spreadsheet covering all levels of NCAA (D-I, II & III) and MCLA (D-I & II) since 2010. There's a separate tab at the bottom for NCAA D-I along with other sports. As growth continues to explode, gaining more and more TV exposure (and dollars) not just on ESPN's networks but CBSSN, NBCSN, FS1, and conference networks (Big Ten), expect to see plenty of further movement in the coming years as big-time schools migrate from club play to full NCAA sponsorship.

Next, the latest USILA Top 25 for Division I:

Thanks, Been wondering when this thread would start and am glad to see Fairfield moving up the rankings. As a student there in the early 80s I always thought they should emphasize lacrosse given the HS lax hotbeds they draw their student population from.

Beating Duke at anything is always enjoyable.  Basketball and Lax especially, of course.

The first two NCAA auto-bids will be earned today. #4 Syracuse & #9 Notre Dame are going at it right now for the ACC title on ESPNU, and it's 7-7 at halftime. Over on CBSSN, the Patriot League crown will go to either #1 Loyola MD or #18 Lehigh, and the heavily favored Greyhounds are up 7-3 with the 3rd quarter about the get underway. The Mountain Hawks had the early lead before Loyola scored 6 unanswered.

This year's tournament will expand to 18 teams in all, with 10 auto-bids.

The Irish have dominated most of the 2nd half, going up 15-10. But Cuse has scored the last two and it's 15-12 Notre Dame with 5:45 left. In their comeback win over Duke, the Orange trailed 14-10 late, so we'll have to see if they've got another raly in them.

Loyola now leads Lehigh 13-5 with 4:30 left.

EDIT - Make it 3 straight for Cuse, and it's 15-13 with 4:58 left.

It's now 4 straight for Cuse, as Scott Loy fires in an overhead screamer from the left point into the top right corner of the net on the fly. 15-14 Notre Dame with 2:02 to play.

Hard to believe this is the same squad that lost 21-7 to Duke earlier in the season.

Gigantic save for Cuse by Dominic Lamolinara, who entered the game after the 3rd quarter and has been nails for the 4th. Cuse ball after a time-out with under a minute to play.

EDIT - And Connor Kelly makes the save of the game on a point blank blast with 5 seconds left, and then runs out the clock as Notre Dame hangs on for the 15-14 win and the ACC crown. The auto-bid is pretty much a formailty, as all 6 ACC teams will be in the NCAA field.

Another incredible game.

Loyola pulls away for the Patriot crown and their 14th straight victory, 16-7. Lehigh will be on pins & needles hoping for an at-large bid, which will likely require no teams ranked below them winning an autobid.

Why did the ACC and Patriot League decide to host their tournaments a week before the end of the season? I'm not a lacrosse fan, so I found it really weird that Notre Dame is going to play Army next weekend.

In the Patriot it's to avoid conflicts with final exams, which begin this week for Navy, Loyola, Lehigh & Bucknell. Those for Colgate, BU & Holy Cross start next week. Army & Lafayette finals begin the week of May 12-16.

It's probably the same reasoning for the ACC, but since this is their first season sponsoring the sport I can't speak to it from a policy stance. Finals at Duke, UNC, Syracuse & Virginia begin this week. Notre Dame's start May 5. Maryland's begin May 15.

It is odd to see regular season non-conference games played by participants whose conference tournaments have already ended, but a smattering of games like this have been held for years. I have no idea what logic is behind it.

Yesterday's USILA poll. The last 4 teams listed were previously in the rankings over the past month but have since dropped out without receiving any votes.

I'll post a conference tournament rundown in a bit.

The majority of Division I conference tournaments involve only the top four qualifying teams regardless of the number of lax members (6 or more). The lone exception is the Patriot, in which the top 6 of the league's 9 members participate.

The 18-team NCAA field will be announced live this Sunday night at 9 pm on ESPNU. There will be two play-in games on Weds 5/7 before 16-team bracketed play begins with four games each on Sat 5/10 and Sun 5/11, each hosted by the higher seed. The first two quarterfinals will be Sat 5/17 at Hofstra (Hempstead NY), with the other two on Sun 5/18 at U-Delaware (Newark DE). The Final Four will be at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore MD with semifinals on Sat 5/24 and the championship on Memorial Day (Mon 5/26) at 1 pm.

The league voted before the season not to allow departing member and eventual 3rd-place finisher Penn State (bound for the new Big Ten lacrosse conference next spring) to participate in this year's tournament. Fifth-place Delaware moves up to round out the field, meaning UMass (which finished tied with the Blue Hens in conference play at 1-4 but lost to them head-to-head) is the only eligible CAA team left out of the field.

Thanks for organizing all of this mabrowndog, it's a great resource. To clarify on the match-ups in your previous post for the Ivy League tournament, (#2) Cornell will play (#3) Penn at 5 PM, and (#1) Harvard will play (#4) Yale at 8 PM (all games on ESPN3).

The tournaments so far have been pretty entertaining. Albany scored the tying goal with 5 seconds left in the 4th before winning in OT in a wild 17-16 win over Stony Brook. Hobart upset NEC #1 seed St. Joe's, and first-year program Richmond upset #1 Mercer in the A-Sun tournament.

Ugh. The perils of copy/paste when seeking format consistency -- and when in a rush. Thanks for catching that.

Cornell has scored 6 straight goals to take a 10-7 lead over Penn after 3 quarters in Cambridge. Harvard-Yale still to come.

Running down the rest of the results:

AMERICA EAST - #3 UMBC upset #2 Binghamton 16-10, while top seed Albany needed overtime to knock off #4 Stony Brook, 17-16.

ATLANTIC SUN - #4 Richmond upset top seed Mercer 14-6. #2 High Point edged #3 Jacksonville 12-11.

BIG EAST - Host and #3-seed Villanova took down #2 Marquette 9-6, while #1 Denver had no trouble with #4 Rutgers, 14-7.

COLONIAL (CAA) - #1 Hofstra held serve over #4 Delaware 8-6, while #2 Drexel squeezed past #3 Towson 11-10.

ECAC - #1 Fairfield hammered #4 Michigan 12-5, while #3 Air Force dispatched host and #2 Ohio State 14-7.

METRO ATLANTIC (MAAC) - #1 Siena defeats #4 Canisius 14-11, while #2 Marist holds off #3 Detroit 11-9.

NORTHEAST (NEC) - In the game of the day, #4 Hobart upset host and top seed St. Joseph's in double overtime 10-9. #2 Bryant knocked off #3 Sacred Heart 12-8.

They're underway in the battle of the dogs at Stony Brook. UMBC got on the board first on a goal by Pat Young, but the Great Danes respond with 3 straight by brothers Lyle & Miles Thompson and Tim Cox. Nate Lewnes got the Retrievers back within a goal on an extra-man score, but Albany has responded with 2 more from Ryan Feurstein & Miles Thompson.

5-2 Great Danes after one quarter.

Right off the opening face-off of the 2nd, Young notches his 2nd for UMBC and it's 5-3 Danes. Albany goalie Blaze Riorden just stuffed Max Maxwell on a point blank chance.

Albany starting to look a little flustered as UMBC's defense has really clamped down. The Danes are on a man advantage following a high-stick call, but they can only keep possession for about 30 seconds before cousin Ty Thompson launches a shot from the right WAY over the net for a turnover.

And attacker Matt Gregoire comes around a pick by Young, makes the curl, and scores on an underhand worm-burner to bring the Retrievers within 5-4 with 7:30 left in the half.

Lyle Thompson needs just three steps from behind the UMBC net to put on a ridiculous fake and score on the doorstep for Albany. 6-4 Danes with 6:25 left in the half.

An offsides penalty proves costly for UMBC as Miles Thompson feeds cousin Ty for the putaway on the right doorstep. 7-4, Danes.

The refs with a colossal blown call as time expires. Two quick turnovers, first to UMBC and then right back to Albany off a missed down-field clear, result in a Danes rush with seconds remaining. Problem is when the ball carrier crossed midfield, Albany already had 7 offensive players in the zone, a clear offsides that wasn't called. They connect on a setup pass to Ty Thompson, who rips an immediate rifle shot for a score that beats the buzzer, and it's going to count. This is a potential disaster if UMBC manages to close the scoreboard gap.

As it stands, it's 8-4 Albany at halftime.

The Thompsons have become quite the story during their tenure at Albany.

Miles and Ty are seniors, while Lyle has another year left. Native Americans from the Onandaga Nation in upstate New York, they've been featured this season on the front page of the New York Times and in Fortune magazine. And just last week, they were spotlighted on ABC's World News Tonight.

Ty Kashur jogs a few steps from the extended goal line left of the net, then turns & fires a hard bouncer past Riorden for UMBC to make it 9-5 Albany.

Meanwhile, Siena & Marist are underway up in Poughkeepsie, and Richie Hurley & Jordan Barlow have scored twice to give the visiting Saints a 2-0 lead. For Hurley, who assisted on Barlow's goal, he's got 77 points on the season and has now scored in 33 straight games.

Pat Young gets the hat trick on a man-advantage goal for UMBC, fighting off stiff man-to-man defense, and the Retrievers are within three now, 9-6.

Miles Thompson goes five-hole, and seconds later Feurstein rips in a left-hander from an east-west sprint that finds the upper right corner of the net.

And there's another score from Cox. Albany keeps winning face-offs and capitalizing on UMBC turnovers (12 so far) and it's 12-6 Danes with 7:20 left in the 3rd.

A highlight reel score from Lyle Thompson is the last straw, as goalie Connor Gordon (a Cape Codder from Bourne MA) is pulled in favor of freshman Ruston Souder. But it's no use, as Lyle feeds John Maloney for the immediate score to make it 14-6, Albany.

Miles & Lyle sandwich goals around a UMBC score by Joe Impallaria, and it's 16-7 Danes after three quarters. Albany's spot in the NCAAs looks pretty secure.

Colin Clive scores twice and Barlow notches another to give Siena a 5-1 lead approaching halftime. The Saints held a similar lead over Marist earlier in the season, and had to hold on for a narrow 9-8 win.

Lyle Thompson feeds Miles for the score. Lyle now has 113 points on the season, and is just one back of the all-time record.

Ty Thompson takes a ridiculous cross-body feed from Bennett Drake to make it 19-7 Danes. It prompts yet another goalie change for UMBC as James Maxwell enters.

And now Miles takes the feed from Lyle and scores on a behind-the-back shot to make it 20-7. Lyle Thompson has just tied the all-time single-seaosn points record.
