1947 Dodgers started Hal Gregg, a guy who'd had a 5.87 era that year for a 70 ERA+ down from his career 82 ERA+ .  Guthrie's numbers are 96 ERA+ this year and 102 for his career.

Harrison for Texas in 2011, Wright for Cleveland in 1997 were pretty underwhelming.

Thanks for that.  I tried to look it up on BBRef, but my subscription expired.  Have to renew.

The Giants need to score basically right now.  Yost isn't going to fuck around -- Herrera is coming in if Guthrie gets in trouble in the 4th.

Didn't Randy Johnson go 3 IP in relief in the playoffs for the '95 Mariners?

Edit: Just looked it up, he did.  And he went 1.1 IP in 2001 Game 7 (and got the win!) on no rest after pitching 7 IP in Game 6.

Mussina also threw three shutout innings on two days rest in the 2003 ALCS.

Both runners would have been better off sliding feet-first!!!   Crawford had nothing to worry about at 2B from the runner.

All this talk about Ned Yost's virtues is . . . interesting.  Terrible managers can win.  Grady freaking Little almost did.  One of Roger Angell's books from the 70's had a lot of quotes from two Tigers fans who were adamant that Mayo Smith, the manager of the championship '68 Tigers was absolutely horrible.

I was hoping for some Harold Reynolds inanity re: sliding into first and he didn't disappoint

I have it on mute, but it looks like he is safe to me. It's really close though.

Science has proven there is no way you are first by sliding.  On the contrary, you DO slow down.

I always thought you listened for sound with the catch, not the foot. You're listening for the pop of the ball in the mitt, and looking at the base to see if the runner touches before or after you hear that pop.

Yeah, but the slowing is from the arcing per Reynolds, not the friction of sliding on the dirt.
