Been outscored 55-8 over their last 3. That is not a misprint. Has there ever been a worse 3 game stretch in franchise history?
That's wild - the 1897 Louisville Colonels were on the losing side of the biggest single-game blowout in history when they lost to the Chicago Colts 36-7. When I saw it was the 1890's Colonels referenced in the tweet above, I assumed that game would have been part of the streak, but nope - the Colonels franchise just had a penchant for getting blown out.The ‘94 Colonels went 36-94 and had a -321 run differential. Looks like they had a better OF than the ‘22 Sox, though.
What do you mean? They're outperforming their run differential. That means they have a good manager and a great bullpen.Well at least people can stop pointing at run differential and pretending this is a good team.
Yeah, when I saw this thread, the first thing I thought was "I can remember some games in late 1978..."Boston Massacre was worse just due to its impact and the emotional investment in the games. At some point, when a team is as middle of the road as this one, losing by ten or losing by fifteen/twenty-three it doesn't really make a difference. Getting trounced three times in a row is more embarrassing. It's really just accentuating that the 2022 version of the Sox is simply not ready for prime time.
It's actually a little worse than that, Yolmer Sanchez pitched an inning and only allowed 1 run, so the actual pitchers threw 24 innings and allowed 52 earned runs.
Wait until you see today's lineupWell at least it can’t get worse, right?
Right?
Yes. I mean the last three games against Houston in the 2021 playoffs were pretty bad. But what I thought of were September 8-11, 1978 against the Yankees (specifically the first three, which I attended), and my choice, October 1-3, 1972, when they went from 1.5g up with four to play to eliminated before the final day.Boston Massacre was worse just due to its impact and the emotional investment in the games. Kutter Crawford pitches today against Toronto, so.... maybe?Well at least it can’t get worse, right?
Right?
Yep, this was the worst stretch for me too. They came into ‘04 with a ton of expectations and then immediately crapped the bed as soon as it really counted. I’m so glad I gave up on the Red Sox for good at that point and never watched a game again“Worse” was technically up to interpretation, so I’d go with games 1-3 of the ‘04 ALCS. Sure they turned it around but post-game 3 was rock bottom for me as a fan.
But, they didn't give up, winning eight straight at the end of the season to pull even with New York and force the one-game playoff with the infamous ending. Interesting that New York still could've won it regular season but they lost a 9-2 game at Yankee Stadium to the Indians on the last day. It's only -23 over five games, but the August series sweep against the MFY at home definitely felt the same. They were 19 games over 500 before and an also ran after.
My bad. I meant to put 2006 somewhere in my post! But, they didn't give up, winning eight straight at the end of the season to pull even with New York and force the one-game playoff with the infamous ending. Those 2005 and 2006 teams felt real similar to this year's and last year's teams in a way.... some cobbled together bits and pieces from the prior seasons great teams but clearly lacking. Pedroia looked like garbage and people were saying he was at best a AAAA player. Confusion around Papelbon... Lester was walking too many to be a significant contributor coming back from Cancer treatment. Schilling was getting old and recovering from an injury. Youk was at best a role player. Becket didn't look like the pitcher he was in Florida and that guy they stapled to him looked like he was about to retire. Ortiz and Manny started to also show some signs of decline and the best option for the future at CF was still in AAA or not even on the team yet (Drew). My bad. There's definitely a bit of residual, personal angst for this series. We had just moved into our first house and one of my first tasks was to bury an underground fence for the dog. Mission accomplished, but not before acquiring full tattoo sleeves on both forearms of poison ivy. No untouched skin to be found. I was pumped to have Sox-Yankees tickets for the Saturday game, but they had lost both ends of the Friday double header. It wasn't the hottest day of the summer, but 80+ in full son in the right field grandstand isn't very pleasant. We went with my best friend and his wife and they had quite the blowup over him bringing her an Italian sausage instead of the chicken fingers she had asked for. It was at that moment that I first realized that they weren't gonna make it! Just a ton of bad juju surrounding the entire day/weekend.Those 2005 and 2006 teams felt real similar to this year's and last year's teams in a way.... some cobbled together bits and pieces from the prior seasons great teams but clearly lacking. Too similar, 1978 and 2006. I remember the Eckersley start most in '78, figuring he'd right the ship after the first two blowout losses. Nope, lost 7-0 (Guidry). Guidry was sensational that year though. My bad. I meant to put 2006 somewhere in my post!
IIRC, it was his knee that was hurt during the end of that season. And it was consistently the same knee, unlike a couple seasons later when he couldn't keep it straight. It also seemed that during the 5th game of that sweep Manny threw in the towel, or am I misremembering?
Including that game, he only played 11 more games that year; and in 3 of them he left midway. There was a two week pause between games he appeared in as well.
Have you ever seen video of that collision? It's absolutely horrific to watch Fisks knee bend completely backwards. I couldn't find it with a quick You Tube search, I may have seen it as part of a TV production of some sort1974 Red Sox.
Up 7 games on August 23.
2-11 the next 13, resulting in a 1.5 game deficit (so the Orioles were 11-3 during that stretch)
Went 11-12 the rest of the way to end up 6 behind (the O's were 16-8).
Not a great team, they were pretty lucky to be ahead that much; Lynn and Rice were late season callups and Fisk missed the last 3 months due to a collision at home plate.
