What is next for BB?

But do you know what's better than coaching D3 football that nobody cares about? Tens of millions of dollars to coach teams who are on TV every week.
Thus the "given all the money theyve made" intro, followed by the reasons as to why coaching bigtime CFB and BB is a headache they may no longer want.
"Better" is in the eye of the beholder.

Will be interested too see if he does any volunteer coaching with Holy Cross women’s lacrosse where his daughter is the head coach.

Hafleys not BB, but id be surprised if this (todays Glob) view was uncommon.

Jeff Hafley had a simple reason for leaving Boston College last week — he just wants to focus on coaching ball again.
Hafley left after four years as Eagles head coach to become the Packers’ defensive coordinator, and he told CBS Sports that it was the result of frustration with the new college sports landscape. Hafley considered himself BC’s “general manager,” trying to manage NIL money and the transfer portal on top of traditional recruiting.
“You’re trying to manage the ‘cap’ and you don’t really know what the cap is, and now you’re fund-raising,” Hafley said. “I mean, I want to coach football. I want to coach more defense than I did last year, and now it’s just prioritizing again. I got to coach again.”

At this point, given all the money they've made and their discomfort with the "modern" NIL and transfer situations, I'm surprised that several big time college coaches don't end up in d3 programs where they can mostly just....coach football. Same with basketball. (assuming they still enjoy doing that). The service academies are d1, of course, but its still mostly coaching, and a whole lot less of the other stuff.
The Service Academies have a whole different set of other stuff. Plus you still need to recruit, compete, and win against opponents who have NIL, the transfer portal, and redshirts at their disposal.

The jobs that are pure coaching without the year round grind are the spring league jobs. No recruiting, no academic eligibility concerns, no fundraising, minimal politics, short season. Even D3 coaches have to deal with all of that. Bob Stoops fits your description -- big time coach who got burnt out and now basically just coaches for fun.

Off topic for this thread, but as a CFB fan I think we’re headed towards a day when those programs have separate GMs just like the pros. Given the current landscape, it’s wayyyy too much work to have these guys holding both roles.

People are out of their minds. Seeing monsters under the bed everywhere.

Belichick's situation could be as simple as nobody wanted a 72 year old guy who has just compiled 3 of the worst 4 seasons in his Patriots career in the last 4 years, (probably just a coincidence those 4 years were the post Brady years) including his worst year ever, by far, in 2023.
Yep, this. Bill not landing a job wasn’t 4D chess, or some revelation about the incompetence/risk averseness of franchises.

It was almost certainly because Bill hasn’t put a solid enough roster together in 5 years, and is too old for anyone to feel comfortable about him rebuilding a team.

As in many things in life, multiple facts can be both correct and true:

- Bill was picky about the situations he pursued. Zero chance, for example, he would want to work for Tepper. Unclear if he wanted to be on the west coast.

- Teams with openings this offseason were wary about hiring BB as head coach for the various reasons stated in this thread.

Makes sense. And wouldn't be surprised to see him midseason after someone gets axed - so he can get aa head start on 2025.

CFB National Champs Michigan just hired Sean McGee from the Chicago Bears. His specific title is GM for the football team. He’ll be responsible for recruiting strategy, scouting (including the transfer portal), and NIL. Crazy the parallels with an NFL GM.

I would expect this will become commonplace among the major programs, if it isn’t already.

I think people are forgetting one of BB's great traits. Being heartless about past accomplishments.

Highsmith had that job at the U right? I think we'll also see movement back and forth. It's a natural consequence of the NIL stuff and probably really good for college coaches, even if they end up losing a bit of salary.

Now, as for a good use of public funds in our University system...maybe not so much.

I don't see Bill taking an existing coach's job. I can see him having too much respect for the coaching fraternity and the difficulty in getting and keeping a job, so I can't imagine he'd want to be the reason someone who thought they were OK gets canned. Going after an open job would be another matter I'm sure.
So he's opposite of Phil Jackson?

This might be fascinating. And more like A ham Sandwich (Just ham and Bread no mayo.) and Cocaine
We choose the combination of toppings and condiments available on meal day that give us the best chance of having a good lunch. Next question.

I could barely hear Brennan Carroll but Steve was clear. I liked how he said "Well I have a job and he doesn't".

"Bill's Best Available" would be epic.
"We're on the clock for the 42nd pick of the draft, let's check with Bill..."

1. LT from Valdosta St.
2. OG from Mankato St.
3. PK for NW Iowa
4. MF Syracuse lacrosse that played WR in HS
5. LS Western Kentucky
6. Johnny Foxboro from Foxborough HS

I can't believe he is doing this so quickly. I'm sure it won't be as awesome as it possibly could be, but I can't wait.

You don’t want to read BB’s thousand page breakdown of Navy’s defensive backfield scheme from 1948 to 1953?

Edit: Giardi says the runor is it will be about leadership:

Regardless, every male over the age of 45 in the New England region will purchase this book – either for themselves or their fathers.

It’s going to be some leadership book highlighting foxhole experiences from World War I, isn’t it?

Shula had enough dirt around him that shouldn't have been forgotten. He left the field uncovered before the AFCCG against the Jets in order to soak the field to slow down the NY Sack Exchange. He also broke his contract with the Colts to go coach Miami, and Miami had to pay the Jets a first round pick for the damages. He also told players that he would cut them if they did not taken painkillers and get back out on the field (he was named in a lawsuit for that).

But if BB has more I want it out there.

I was going to say the book would be about lacrosse, but it seems to be about leadership. Perhaps lots of stuff about someone like Admiral Rickover?

This seems kind of dismissive, no?
I get where everyman is coming from. To a very large segment of the population, he's just a fucking football coach. And a pretty large segment of football fans wont give a shit what he has to say about anything. If it's really all about "leadership," (as opposed to his football career) I dont see anyone under 35 reading it. I dont really know the size of the cross-section of "football fans who don't hate Belichick who are in positions where a book on leadership will help them," but I'd guess its pretty limited. And I really don't think "leaders" who aren't football fans are going to dive in. My wife is in a job that has leadership challenges. She knows who BB is. Doesn't particularly hate him. Would not read a book he wrote.

To be fair, it's really white dudes over the age of 40. Maybe 35. 35 year olds would have been about 12 for the first title.

I figure it’s your average white, suburbanite slob with an average house with nice hardwood floors who likes porno and war and books about football.

Have we had a thread about "porno" versus "porn"? I feel like porn would have gone better here.

If you're Belichick, maybe you just see if you can get a list of everyone who bought the Coach K book. They will all buy this one. Except the woman who is the sous chef at the Bear restaurant, but she's a fictional character.

Ayo Edebiri is from Dorchester. I think she'd enjoy reading Belichick's book.
