Did I read that right?  In that "Grudge Match" commercial they were using random tweets as promotional material?

Well, not much worse than "critic's" review that comes from Town Journal at West Bromphuck, Alabama.

Peyton Manning is sportsman of the year?  The same Peyton that choked in the 2013 playoffs, blew a 24 point lead in primetime to his superior rival, and just lost to an inferior division rival?  What is the criteria to win sportsman of the year, play well for 10 regular season games?

Give Peter King sound bytes. Seriously, that's how he chose him.

Reason 4,507,409 why a cold weather Super Bowl is a bad idea.  Because what I want to be doing in February in NYC is partying on the deck of a cruise ship.

The only reason I haven't cancelled SI is sentimentality. It's time. I mean, what an unoriginal, awful choice. Hell, I would have preferred Lebron. At least he was a major reason a team won a championship

Just off the top of my head, but my "Sportsman of the Year" would probably have been the Boston Marathon staff and volunteers who manage one of the most democratic celebrations of athletic skill in the world and at a moment's notice became first responders to a terrorist attack?

Perhaps more appropriate rather than an NFL QB who made an incredible comeback... in 2012.

Somebody posted in another thread that the SOTY had never gone to an athlete who didn't win a championship of some kind in that year. Something like that.

I'm not a Manning hater but it's a silly choice. Ortiz, Jimmie Johnson, Gary Stevens all better choices who actually took home some hardware in 2013.

I could care less about nascar, but isn't Jimmie Johnson putting himself in the goat conversation in stock car racing? He seems like a great choice for the award, and it would have been an interesting read to understand why he's so good in a sport many of us know little about. Instead, Peyton manning. Wow

I tried to read it I really did, I skimmed until I found 1 sentence in the entire article that had to do with 2013, you know the year he just won an award for, and it was about how good his sportsmanship was because he waited around after the playoff loss last year to congratulate the retiring ray lewis.  If that doesn't make you sportsman of the year for 2013 nothing does.

I couldn't name a single past Sportsman of the Year without just guessing some random marquee names like Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, LeBron James, etc. Good for Peyton - I want another trophy-less season filled with a ton of personal accolades.

Bingo. Really guys, no one gives a shit about SI's Sportsman of the Year. It's right up there with the ESPY awards.

I looked at the list of nominations.  Yep, only King had Manning.  Manning won because that is what King wanted.  Garbage in, garbage out.

Did King prevail at SI for business reasons (i.e., to help promote his spinoff website), or did King make himself an insufferable whiny toad and everyone else with other nominees relented?

Let's be clear: I don't give a fig about the SI Sportsman of the Year award. It's totally irrelevant.

Still, just as an intellectual exercise for the hell of it, as opposed to Manning, in 2013 David Ortiz:
- Won the World Series
- Was named World Series MVP (with 1.948 OPS)
- Hit what is now one of the most memorable playoff HRs in recent memory in the ALCS
- Rallied his hometown after a terrorist bombing and traumatizing manhunt
- Returned from a serious achilles injury

But he didn't wait around to shake Ray Lewis's hand, so screw him, y'know?

No offense to you - but this analysis assumes that SI chooses based on actual athletic achievements. They choose based on what will get the most eyeballs, clicks and magazine buys. If they didn't have a swimsuit issue Jennie Finch might have been chosen this year.

They couldn't have picked a Boston Marathon runner as Sportsmen of the Year? All of the great stories that came out of that tragedy, people who went back and finished the race after being injured. Are these not better sports stories than that forehead fucktard.

For all the dumping on the Pats this week, they looked better/played tougher in their loss than NO, Denver, or Cincy did. There are no juggernauts out there (outside maybe Seattle).
