Screaming A was on ESPN this morning going on about how much of a distraction Tom's father was for the team and how it was going to negatively affect them all week. He then transitioned into a Deflategate discussion and finished by saying that before Deflategate the Pats always had the fewest fumbles and since Deflategate they are right up there leading the league, dropping the ball like crazy.
Not sure if he was trying to rile up what few NE fans actually watch that garbage, but if he was, it worked.
2015 they tied for fewest fumbles, but making up stuff is how DFG works.

https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/fumbles-per-game?date=2016-02-08

Edit: And of course interceptions were way way down this year at a level never seen in the history of recorded history so the only explanation is some sort of cheating, probably over-infalted balls.

So Media Day is actually tonight. Falcons are up now and the Patriots start at 10:00 p.m.

NFL network coverage kind of sucks.
It really sucks. The only media coverage is the questions being asked by their own people. The rest of the time I have to listen to Kurt Warner while they answer questions from other media members.

It was much better when the only coverage on media day was the actual Q and A.

Fox sports 1 and I believe CSN will. It's "halftime" now with some crap band playing so CSN is currently re-airing the post game from Supe Bowl XLIX

according to the countdown, the Patriots start in 11 minutes

How stupid can Shanahan be? Why the hell would you bring a backpack with your fucking gameplan to the media day? Why not just leave it in the safe in your room?

HOUSTON — Whew.

That was Kyle Shanahan’s reaction Monday night after a lost-and-found misadventure at the Super Bowl.

At the end of the Atlanta Falcons' media session, the team's star offensive coordinator — soon to become the San Francisco 49ers' new head coach — discovered that his backpack was nowhere to be found. Gone — the contents inside apparently including the team's gameplan for Super Bowl LI.

As the drama unfolded, Shanahan paced Minute Maid Park, looking for clues. A Falcons security agent, meanwhile, searched through an unattended backpack on the floor.

“I’ve got to find it,” Shanahan told USA TODAY Sports, searching more than 15 minutes after the media session ended, the players already departed.

But before you suspect the New England Patriots were behind this, lighten up.
Shanahan’s bag was mistakenly lifted by San Francisco Examiner columnist Art Spander, who left his backpack at the site where reporters had gathered to interview Shanahan.

After nearly 30 minutes of searching and frantic phone calls, Spander returned with Shanahan’s bag. The coach was undeniably relieved.

“That would have been bad,” he said in a text message to USA TODAY Sports.

Spander, 78, is covering his 40th Super Bowl. He had no idea he had taken the wrong bag until contacted by a fellow writer.

SAS already picked the Falcons to win.
Also, Donovan McNabb said on their show this morning that the Pats will DOUBLE Sanu and keep Butler on Jones one on one. SAS and Max looked at him like he was crazy.
Guy must have been concussed in that Super Bowl way harder than we thought.

Aside from the headline, this WSJ article makes a lot of sense. It's short and this is the jist:

New England faced the easiest slate of passers in the league with their opponents compiling an NFL-low 83.1 passer rating in other games. Against the Patriots, the group actually fared better, 84.4, a difference that ranked 19th in the NFL, according to Stats, LLC.

Bill Belichick’s defense didn’t face a top-10-rated QB all year and the three highest-rated it did face in the regular season—Ryan Tannehill, Russell Wilson and Andy Dalton—combined for an impressive 106.4 rating in three games.

If Ryan improves his season-long passer rating of 117.1 at the rate of improvement the Patriots allowed this season, he would finish the Sunday’s game with a rating of 118.9. No quarterback with a rating higher than 114 has ever lost a Super Bowl (15-0).
Count me as getting increasingly worried that the Falcons will feast on this defense.

There's no doubt in my mind they will move the ball fairly easily. The question will be whether or not we can keep them out of the end zone (and turnovers, of course).

The tidbit about Tannehill, Wilson and Dalton is a little disingenuous, though. First, why limit to the regular season? To avoid having to account for Big Ben, who's better than any of those three and who had an 81 QBR? Also, Tannehill stunk in the first half and didn't get going until after the Pats built a big lead and their D had to keep taking the field after they were forced to start their rookie QB. Dalton was 21-31 for 254 yards--good, but not great. And neither Cincy or Miami exactly ran all over the Pats' D.

Well, it's kind of a lazy article in that it seems to exclude Roethlisberger which is the most recent game, doesn't it? While the larger point (Patriots played a somewhat weak group of QB) is undeniable, I'm not sure how to think about a four game sample like this.

The Tannehill game was September 18; the Dalton game was October 16 and the Wilson game was November 13. The Wilson game was sort of recent and terrible---the Roethlisberger game was very recent and very good (QBR of 83, inflated by the last drive). The Falcons certainly might blow out the Pats D, but I'm not really sure this collection of games gives us much insight into the probability of that happening.

Yeah. I think this is what it will come down to.
I think both offenses move the ball and converting for TDs and not settling for FGs will be even more critical than usual.

Not expecting many turnovers but one early could put someone playing catch up quickly.

All three teams have a better defense, but the Falcons played well against a beat up Seahawks team and decimated Packers team recently. The Seattle game was also our worst game by far from an Offense and Defense standpoint. Look how bad Brady played against the Texans. If the Falcons replicate that, Brady's numbers will be equally as bad.

I expect Ryan to have a very good game, but trying to compare how this game will play out to a previous game is ridiculous.

Not remotely saying that this Pats' defense is in the same category as the 85 Bears, but that Bears team did give up 28 points to the Buccaneers (who went 2-14 that year), 24 points and 411 passing yards to the Vikings (who went 7-9 and had Tommy "19 td, 26 int" Kramer at QB), and of course got lit up by Marino and the Dolphins, allowing 38 points in that Monday night loss.

Good - even great - defenses can get ripped by their opponent on occasion. It even happened to that Bears team. Not often, but it did happen. So for the Pats to give up a lot to a quality QB like Wilson shouldn't surprise anyone.

The Pats held more QBs to under 200 yards than they allowed QBs to pass for more than 300.

You take out ONE game from those numbers (Seattle) and the Pats year long pass defense holds the QBs on their schedule to a lower QB rating than their yearly averages.

And the Seattle game was the first game after trading Collins therefore the D was still evolving at that point.

In their losses this season, the Falcons have scored the following : 24, 24, 30, 15, 28

They are going to get their points and yards and so should the Pats. Red zone defense and special teams should decide the game for both teams.

Why the hell would you bring your playbook to Super Bowl media day and then leave it in your bag unattended? That's unbelievable.

And facing the Pats? I'd hire a Brinks security truck to drive that playbook around.

The loss to the Bills may have been the worst but of course Brady did not play in that game. And one could make the point that the Pats D played reasonably well in that game. So in general I agree with your comment in the context of the current Pats roster.

I'm already sick of the Brady/Belichick are Trump supporters, ergo Fuck the Patriots theme.

Nobody is talking about politics right now, from either of the two teams.

If Kyle Shanahan is the strategic genius he's supposed to be, the backpack would have a fake game plan.

The problem with bringing up the old "who did they play" as a criticism of the Patriots relative to the Falcons is always the same: it misses the obvious point. The Patriots lost to the Bills with Brissett, and just like the Falcons they lost a close game to a healthy Seahawks team. The Patriots didn't lose to the Eagles, or the Chargers, or the Buccaneers; they beat teams better than the Chiefs.

The Falcons may very well win. But if the Falcons team that shows up is the one that lost to all those teams they probably will lose.

Wanna bet it's because the entire team was told not to let it leave their sight because #Cheatriots?

Just a thought, if the Pats win SB51, does Jamie Collins get a Super Bowl ring since he played a half season?

Listening to 95.7, local Bay Area sports talk show in the car a bit and Spander, the long time local writer that found it said he wouldn't try to do anything with it because that would be unethical. He then said he wouldn't understand any of it anyway. Naturally, the 95.7 guy then said it's a good thing it didn't get into the hands of a Belichick spy, of which he has thousands. I don't even get pissed any more, just laugh.

If you're the falcons are you comfortable saying that the playbook wasn't seen by NE at all? It would be amusing (though unlikely) if the Falcons had to scrap some piece of their plan because it may have been compromised.

I think it is highly unlikely, but I find it a bit amusing that the exaggerated reputation the Pat's have may cause some angst after this incident. Two weeks always feels too long, it gives me time to think odd thoughts like these.

I remember how pissed I was at Parcells in '96 for ruining the pre-SB buildup with his Jets nonsense.

And in the past, I have really enjoyed the hype, media day and all the rest that goes on in the days ahead of the game.

This year, none of it interests me. There are no stories that are particularly riveting. I respect the Falcons but they are hardly a classic villain. No NY team angle, no Richard Sherman, no natural rival.

Just bring on the damn game. It can't get here fast enough.

Maybe it's because the Pats have been here so many times before and, as a result, I have too. But I suspect it's more about the intense desire I have to see Tom get his ultimate FU moment. Everything else kind of pales in comparison.

I'm not a big fan of Albert Breer but he pretty much nails it in here.

It is completely irrational but I'm a little concerned about Brady being a little too hyped to start given how much we know he wants the #5/Suck it, Roger moment. I thought he was too wound up to start the second Giants SB.

Just as long as they don't come out and run any long developing plays that immediately put Brady under tremendous pressure.

I'd stick Atlanta's offense on the field to start the game. Tough to come off of a 2 week layoff with 11-13 offensive players full of nerves and execute a touchdown drive right out of the gate.
