I don't understand this take it by Wed. or we're done strategy.  If they want to look at other options and pull the offer if they do something else I get that.  But in the meantime why give an ultimatum?

On the presumption these guys know what they're talking about, it sounds more like this is the Red Sopx final offer and it will stay that way. They're "done" renegotiating, but the offer would stay on the table

If the report is true that the Sox have offered him deals of 4, 5, and 6 years then it's clear that they would rather have the shortest duration possible.

That would be my preference as well given how precipitous a pitcher's decline can be as the miles pile up on his arm.

Maybe 4 for $100m, 5 for $115m, or 6 for $130m?

It could mean that the offers remain on the table but there's no more negotiations and they move forward towards other pitchers.

Edit: Yaz beat me to the point.

Ok that makes more sense.  But if the offer is 6/130 I don't see how this doesn't get done unless Lester is asking for something like 7/150+.

It sure looks like the Sox are trying to push the agenda. It's as though they've looked into the Crystal ball and determined that FA costs and trade expectations will rise as the off-season progresses. Which might be true.

It goes back to that cryptice "one more step" tweet. If he wants a no trade or an option year, and they don't want to go there ...

The Red Sox are making their best and last offer. If Lester wants 6-130 he can sign it tomorrow, if not, then the Sox pul the offer and move on. Not surprising negotiating tactic. They have a ton of balls in the air and need to move on. They feel this is a fair offer and want to know

Absolutely agree with this. Acquire the free agents you have targeted, then deal from the surplus talent to strengthen the rotation and farm

This deal is not going to get done with the Sox if these are the terms, some team is going to offer 7 years and more money. At least that is my prediction.

And if that happens, it happens. But at that point, no one can say the Sox didn't make a full effort.

It could be the Red Sox are using Lester to put pressure on the Phillies to sign off on a Hamels deal.   No way to tell really.  I am surprised other teams could not beat a 6/130 offer, although maybe thats part of Lesters discount

What decision? Which pen to use? RT @jcrasnickESPN: Source: Cubs offer Jon Lester 6-year $144,000,000.
That's a fake espn account I think

no, I am assuming what the kid reported is true. If its not, then whatever, but if it is then this has to be the Sox thinking. My guess is that these kind of ultimatums happen all the time during FA

As a spanish speaking guy, let me tell you: dont bother reading what Marino Pepen tweets. He just repeats what he reads from other journalists (mainly, english speaking guys) and tweets it in spanish.
Probably, he read the kid's report.

Irresponsible is an interesting word choice. That's what I'd call a 14 year-old with a big mouth.

I would love if Cherinton wins on the majority of his moves again. Hanley > Cespedes Pablo > Headley ( my opinion and obviously their assessment as well) and now Lester and one of top pitching prizes....

Also love seeing the massive day in Boston sports and the team shutting out all it's local reporters essentially...

Here's what I don't get: Who's feeding him this stuff? So, he has a source. But by now, the Sox front office knows what's going on and, if they wanted to, issued a gag order.

And yet, by reading this kid's tweets, you'd think he was getting regular updates.

With Lester, it at least makes sense. As you(?) pointed out earlier, nobody can say the Sox never made a real offer now, even if he doesn't sign.

My crazy scenario is that the FO leaked the first two to give the kid credibility for the Lester leaks. Anyway, no clue, it's been a weird couple of days.

All correct which lends credence to the idea they are having fun with a massive trolling of the Boston media Technically it wouldn't matter if they actually sign all three right .... ?
