HRB nailed it a month ago. Danny is not enamored with Fultz. He is going to draft the guy he likes better than Fultz and he is going to add a probable Top 7 2018 draft pick That's quality GM'ing.
Not if Danny is wrong and Fultz is good.
Ainge could think he knows something no one else does, but that doesn't make it true.
He may like Jackson, but when Fultz is all NBA in four years and JJ is a role player, it is not quality GM'ing.

Before we panic let's see if this trade happens and, if so, what the follow on moves are. It's impossible to judge a transaction based on what limited information - and information of questionable value - is being reported.

As others have mentioned upthread and Sprtsguy33 references in a recent podcast with Chris Ryan, Ainge has every incentive to stir the pot here and see if he gets someone to overpay. All the while, the Cs likely will get one of their top three choices. It's a great position to have.

I don't get this deal unless Ainge got a deal for Anthony Davis lined up.and he needs Philly filler.
He likes Jackson more. That's it. For better or for worse, that appears to be it. God, I hope he's right.

Only if you are adding better players who can shoot. It's 2017 you have to have shooting you just do. Fultz can shoot. Josh Jackson can't to save his life.

Wonder if Jackson could fall all the way to #5 if you make a trade with SAC in the 5 spot? Guess it depends on whether you think PHO wants Tatum or Jackson

Agreed. Unnecessary panic is a bad look. Let's see what the final haul is and how the roster settles in.
Also, I've been a big Jackson fan so if he is the target I can't complain.

Tell us why. What can we expect?

This seems like the opposite of last year's draft. The Sixers NEVER would have traded the rights to Simmons for pick #3 and a future Celtics first.

Maybe because it was considered a 2-player draft and this is considered at 3-4?

Having defended this trade, I will say making it before the draft makes no sense. Hopefully that does not happen.
Would need to include the Brooklyn pick to make the comparison. It felt like last year the gap from 1 to 3 in talent was greater than 1 to 3 this year.
Yup, if the Celtics had taken Simmons and traded away Brown and the first pick this year, people would be pissed right now.

The fact that this has been so public has me thinking. Would Ainge try to squeeze Philly for more on draft night at the moment of truth knowing that their fan base basically has Fultz penciled in at this point?

I was going to include it, but that would matchup with the Lakers pick and the Nets pick is way more valuable (at least in my opinion).
I was focusing on the overall point of improving a competitor.
You are right that the talent gap may have been view as much wider last year.

I tend to agree, but still being a fan of the team giving up the best player isn't as much fun as receiving the best player.

It's a fluid situation, I'd guess that final offers aren't on the table yet. In fact this might be a trial balloon to suck the Sixers in then up the stakes on Draft night. I'm just not into speculation.
I meant why do you like Jackson, that's all.

Not sure why even bother with the 2021 pick. Nobody is trading for it for at least two to three years and by that time it could easily be practically worthless. Has to be the Sac pick or back away.

Well, trading for picks a few years away is kinda why we have the #1.

I know it's still not final, but the idea of protections worries me even more. I thought getting the #1 pick would be close to stress free!

I really don't see the wisdom i trading #1 (Fultz for #3 and two picks of questionale value (very unlikely to be #1), which seems like best case scenario if reports are accurate.

I feel like I am slowly watching Ainge make a Tyler Seguin-style mistake and it scares the day lights out of me.

Fans are either (like me, basically) panicked and upset, or have blind faith in Danny. I am happy to cede I may be overreacting to the news, but I also think Danny has not earned the "In Danny We Trust" label.

Danny has made amazing trades, but he has made plenty of his fair share of mistakes/bad picks. He could be screwing this up and handing a conference rival an all-star PG at age 20, so we can get someone who probably won't find many minutes on thsi team next year (especially if they add Haywood) between Crowder/Brown.

I don;t get it, and so far, I am quite displeased that I am worrying about it. I was excited for the draft. Now I fear it.

On Fultz's knee: I raised this concern, way back in the thread (it was roundly ignored ;)). But my faith is in the Celtics medical staff: Fultz was in town for two days, they checked him out well, and I'm sure they did their due diligence on the knee and everything else.
Okay, I was surprised no one else had the same thought as me. I guess I somehow missed your post then.

That is a pretty huge negative especially on this Celtics team.
His 3 point shot did get better in the 2nd half of the year. He started off the season 9 for 38 from 3 and ended up being 34 for 90 for 38%.

I'd add in another negative is his behavior off the court. His two incidents this year weren't terrible, but hope it's not a pattern of behavior that continues and worsens.

In addition, with the IT injury I would think a PG would help more...

If we don't draft one, do we have to pay IT the max?

A few thoughts on the trade proposal.

How many times have we heard trade rumours around the Cs and nothing ends up being done? Danny has always asked for a motherlode and unless he has a temporary break from reality, he's not doing this trade unless he sees a clear win for the Cs, So here's a couple of ways he might see a win.

One: while he likes Fultz, he loves Porter, Ayton, or Doncic. I mean even if Fultz is going to be Kyrie Irving, maybe DA thinks that any of Porter, Ayton, or Doncic could be a cornerstone piece and is willing to settle for one of Jackson, Fox, or Smith to increase the Cs odds of getting a cornerstone piece.

Two: Jackson isn't a nothingburger. I mean yes there are questions about his game right now but two things aren't in question: (1) he's a world class athlete - perhaps not with power like JB or LBJ but with explosiveness and (2) he plays as hard as any college superstar we've seen recent memory. Jackson is going to have a long NBA career for somebody.

Three: Jackson is really a smokescreen and what DA is thinking that there isn't really all that much difference between Fultz, Fox, or Dennis Smith Jr. Remember that DA has said in the past that he and his staff have been watching all of these guys for years so that one workout isn't really going to change much in their minds. It's funny that we all love Fultz but Fox is clearly the quickest of the guards being projeted in the lottery and DSJ the most explosive. Plus DSJ can shoot.

At the end of the day I think this is another case of talking happening but nothing ending up being done which will be fine the first time we see Zizac throw an outlet pass to Fultz who throws an alley-oop to JB in summer league.

The Cs summer league team is going to be awfully fun to watch.

This is a real good summary of the situation. Hope you're right about Fultz.

Ah gotcha. I watched a bunch of his games. Love his competitiveness and activity. He rarely drifts in games, always present and attacking, plays bigger than he is. Can guard multiple positions and is explosive athletically in a way we haven't seen around here. Would pair nicely with Jaylen and Al. His off the court stuff is my only concern with him.

I don't remember Woj tweeting about the other deals that didn't go through. Would love someone to correct me on this, but he doesn't miss often.
