Jerry Thornton has been team mac all year and was even defending him airing out his grievances if I recall correctly.

and now Bourne and his social media will be analyzed. I have a feeling this is like the proverbial snowball rolling down hill.
So, a rules question about Edelman’s point. If Mac trips Jones or grabs his mask, do the Raiders get an untamed down to kick a field goal after the 15 yards? I know a defensive penalty can’t end the game. Who is the defense there?

Pats became the defending team once C Jones recovered the lateral.

So tripping him gives them a 46 yard field goal. Better than what we got I suppose.
For sure. Turns a 100% chance of losing into a 70% chance of losing. (Thereabouts)

But I don’t really blame Mac on that play. He definitely tried to tackle him. Wasn’t his fault that Rhamondre and Meyers made boneheaded plays.

I'm pretty intrigued by that God Rule that @CFB_Rules was telling us about the other day...
Given that they have earpieces on, I bet they would bring the league in on anything like that. But, yeah, penalties to try to let time expire seem like where it would be the most appropriate.

The level of "let's make things up and construe every little thing in the worst possible light" is off the charts here.
Yeah people are mad at a QUARTERBACK for not making a game-saving play after two other players created the problem, in a disastrous season for an offense that can't even function?

Yeah of all the things to criticize Mac about AND all the things to criticize the team about on that play, Mac's inability to tackle a guy who is both far more athletic and has maybe 50 pounds on him just isn't it. He got flattened by a guy far bigger and stronger.

Could be worse ... could be criticizing him for playing air guitar during practice

Yeah, Mac is probably thrilled to be criticized for the tackle as it takes attention from the real issue with him in that game which is that he played horrific football all game and his bumbling incompetence was a key reason they were tied rather than easily ahead

To be fair, if Mac wasn't shredding his imaginary axe he could work on regular football stuff like throwing the ball more than half a yard to the sidelines or tackling defenders who wind up with the ball - a common occurrence when Jones is on the field.

Instead he's out there doing a below average pretend opening riff to "Welcome To The Jungle".

Yes, Mac is not good right now. BUT - I do think he's taking far too much heat for problems that he neither created nor can ameliorate. He's kind of a douche which doesn't help but sometimes that makes it hard to separate performance from douchiness. And then things veer into people criticizing him for other players drawing false start penalties and running weird routes and not knowing where they should be on the field.

To me, Mac is like a team leader in a company of like 75 employees. He was brought in to lead the star team (the offense) and he directly reports to like 5 managers above him (coaching staff), and then there are company-wide leaders (Kraft). Mac's team had a pretty good 2021, some in the company weren't sold on him or the team he inherited but things turned out ok and there was a lot of reason to believe this would continue. Then in 2022 there was a controversial big shakeup in the 5 managers which led many to question their competency and direction. Mac is suddenly tasked with getting the same results from his team but with entirely new directives, from incompetent managers, it's not making sense to anybody, and it's not the job Mac signed up for. He was told his team was going to develop app X which was like one he made before, but now they want him to make app Y which is a dubious product his team is not suited to build. Moreover, some of the people on his team who seemed to do their jobs adequately before are now being exposed and in some cases cannot even complete tasks to do their jobs. Mac gets frustrated and relays this to his managers, who tell him to just get app Y done. Not surprisingly, Mac's team sucks and is now underperforming relative to 2021, especially since app Y was flawed anyway. The sharks who didn't like him in the first place say "see I told you so". The 5 managers have their own heat to deal with and are fine (in some cases) at pointing the finger at Mac and his team. Mac's team does not want to get fired for their incompetency (which is only due to management) so they are happy to point at Mac as a problem. The leadership team is aloof from Mac's team because the 5 managers manage that connection in their favor because Mac doesn't have direct access.

So I can see how Mac takes heat but he's really just a team leader. A cog in the machine.

Anyway it's Friday before the holidays...

QBs aren't really cogs, they're the most key position, their performance has far more impact on results than any other single player. Mac is getting his share of criticism, and honestly I think he's probably not getting enough from many sources because people want to believe in a 1st round QB, and it's easier to blame the asshole coach nobody likes (far from blameless). Mac Jones has been very bad, independent of any other failures by his co-workers.

The Raiders is a turning point game in some ways... This is a worse pass D than the ones Zappe did well against, the O-line had a strong performance, guys generally gotta open, the weather was good. It was a very good setup for a QB. And Mac tanked hard. He lost his footwork entirely, he badly missed reads, he underthrew a ton of routes. Basically the only thing that he did well was not turn it over, and that was partly some luck on bad throws.

This was the first game that I really thought.... They might legit have a better chance to win with Zappe (who I think has career backup as a ceiling)

Yes, exactly. And also Mac was banging his assistant. Last year she was into it, it was amazing, but then her ex-husband showed up and threatened to "Kick Mac's head in the ground." Mac tried to get transferred to the San Antonio office, but it was all bullshit politics, and anyway, App Y was not technically feasible. In truth, App X really didn't work that well, either.

People shitting on him for not tackling Chandler Jones is the internet at full idiocy. Edelman is a Patriots all-timer but that's a shit opinion.

To be honest on the tackling issue I don’t think Mac stood a chance. I’d say maybe try to trip him but he panicked and got pwned into the earth.

I have a lot of issues with Mac this year but him getting blown the fuck up by Chandler Jones who is a massive human bean is not top 50 on my list. Do you really think our 215 pound QB who hasn’t tackled a guy since his modeling days of yore is suddenly going to spring into action against Chandler Jones? The best tackling QB I know is Andrew Luck but he was a different breed.

I agree. I just thought it was entertaining watching the way Chandler handled him like a cardboard cutout. Nothing against Mac, it was just flat out funny.

Didn't Mac trip someone last year or earlier this year and there was talk by some opponents that it was a cheap shot?

Agreed. I deleted the post that prompted this.

I thought the far more interesting thing that Edelman says is about his histrionics. Both Edelman and Wilfork both basically said the same thing in that regard.

If I were BB I'd call my former players and tell them to STFU and let me handle it. I mean come on.

If Mac didn't show any emotion when bad shit happened there would be some storyline about that. Focus on how he actually plays, there's enough there to talk about.

Rather than BB calling up people who no longer work for him and asking them not to do their current jobs, how about squashing the behavior at its core.

Much like tackling, the Maclash for his histrionics and rock star delusions is a lot extra. But the reality is that if Jones were performing better its likely that none of these things are being widely discussed. He may not be capable of playing much better, especially with the line and cosplaying OC but you have to think that he can tone down his reactions.

I think it actually has value, former and current players talk about how a QB handles himself a lot, for guys who were stars and locker room leaders to comment on how a player's actions go down in the locker room is the type of insight that they actually have and has real value. This isn't talk radio guys, this is former players saying "throwing a fit when you aren't playing well won't go over well with the teammates who are"

Edit-this stuff does matter to an extent in the NFL. If you play great it will doesn't matter if you are liked, but Zach Wilson is an obvious example this year of how losing your team mates can kill you if you are struggling.

I dont think anyone disagrees that a QBs comportment matters or that Macs comportment has been shitty in that he’s pretty clearly frustrated with the coaches. I think a very different question thst we don’t really know is what does it mean about the team. Do guys on the team think Mac is a a twit or do guys on the team think Mac is frustrated with shitty coaching?

(A third question is what does BB think of all this-is Max good enough and playing well enough to be this much of an ass? Do you long term want a guy who increases messiness when things are going poorly? We can alll guess but we won’t actually know until roughly first day of training camp 2023

If Mac and the offense were doing better he wouldn't be frustrated! If BB has a problem with it he can handle it. It doesn't bother me at all.

I really, really doubt that would be the case. Maybe Felger and Mazz callers would make that argument, but I'm certain you wouldn't see former players talking about it or current teammates liking tweets talking about how Mac should display more emotion.

I think the pulling off the pile rule is about avoiding fights. I don’t think it is an injury thing. Heck, officials pull and move players in the pile all the time to see fumble recoveries. I think the rule is that this is for officials not players.

Bailed out by the flag, but it should be noted how bad the pass on the end zone was earlier in the game. Covered by two defensive backs, overthrown and nearly picked.

So, if Mac had thrown a couple more picks in the second half of the season, or if he hadn’t gone 2-2 in the Red Zone with this Red Zone cheek he’d offense, the team would be out of the running for a playoff spot. That’s not a lot but it is something.

Converse if he put up league average QB numbers we'd easily be in the playoffs. Minimizing INT is nice but when it comes paired with bottom end production it's more averting total disaster than contributing positively

It's not great, but the system for evaluating Mac around here - anything good he does doesn't count - doesn't really work, either.

I am still wondering if the secret is to go back to earlier LAST year. First read, quick release, minimal risk. When he has been at his best this year, it has been with just that. My memory tells me it was the same with Zappe. Maybe thats just the secret for not so great (now) quarterbacks. Good heavy, run it 30+ times, let him throw for 200, short passes, no picks. They realized last year that can get you into the playoffs and then blown out, but nothing this year suggests Mac is ready for that next step.
