Its an impossible argument. I know people who favor the Bulls or Cs make the case that this Warriors team couldn't play as well under the old rules and style of play. However that doesn't mean that those teams would match up well under the current rules and style of play either. I suspect Jordan's Bulls and the '86 team would struggle to play at a high level given the state of play in the current NBA.
Yeah, apples and oranges arguments are kind of sucky. I'm trying to put each team in its own box and judge them that way. The Dubs have spent a large part of their playoff run being down by large margins. To me that's a pretty bad sign of not being a great all time team. But yeah, this legacy crap is all kind of wonky. I can only speak for myself and the teams I've seen and this GSW team was a great regular season team but not in the same boat as some other great teams overall.

1986 Celtics largest regular season loss margin was the home loss to Portland 121-103. Only one other loss went double digits and that was to the Nets at the end of the year (108-98). As for the playoffs, they swept the Bulls, Beat the Hawks in 5 (one loss was 106-94), 2 losses to Rockets (106-104 and 111-96). That is what a dominant team looks like in both regular season and playoffs. The Warriors did not accomplish that.

When you blow a 3-1 series lead, your claim to greatness is voided.
Well, when you don't win the championship after the season they've had, their claim to greatness is voided. Though the last two playoff runs have shown the Warriors to be less than great anyhow. They had an amazing season but they proved not to be as deep as they initially seemed given that Curry was pretty banged up and the other guys simply couldn't step up when it counted.

Either way, its been a fun season and this outcome doesn't diminish the fact that on most nights this past season, they were the best show in the NBA for people who didn't hate watching them (a nod to the folks here who dislike the Warriors and their fans - and I won't begrudge them that sentiment).

They were good. But not better than OKC, Cleveland, or San Antonio. Were they better than a healthy 2016 clippers?
I am not so sure San Antonia OKC are as great as their records either. Bill James pointed out there were historically bad teams in the NBA this year as well. The records may be as much to do with competitive imbalance as anything.

That's generally true of most teams that have had exceptionally high win totals. The best teams by regular season SRS (schedule-weighted) of all time are:

1971 Bucks
1996 Bulls
1972 Lakers
2015 Warriors
1997 Bulls
1972 Bucks
2016 Warriors
2016 Spurs
1992 Bulls
2008 Celtics

Note that three of the teams on this list came from the NBA/ABA split era, three from the last two seasons (arguably a high point in talent, but with lots of strategic losing/tanking happening at the same time). Besides that, you have the Bulls dynasty squads, plus the Celtics' big three, who played very well against a pretty competitive league (there were 11 teams winning 50 games that year, compared to 6 this year).
