Saw this last night on Twitter. I'm a subscriber both to The Athletic and The NYT and this seems like a pretty good ending to what was an unsustainable model for The Athletic given the operating losses. Too good to be true to subscribe to coverage at this level of depth and breadth without advertising.
NYT advertising for subscribers is not terribly intrusive so if that approach is used and helps maintain the reporting, I'll keep my subscription to the Athletic. In particular, our household follows the NWSL and USWNT pretty closely -- nowhere else has anywhere near the reporting quality for these topics, so I'd endure some change to keep content.
