Stephen Drew, the second best Red Sox shortstop of my lifetime. Thanks for well above average offense and defense during 2013 culminating in a defensive highlight reel in the postseason.

2014 was a FUBAR, but you still played near flawless defense, helping ensure that 20 one run loses stayed 1 run losses.

One of the most under appreciated and unfairly maligned players I've ever seen. Probably second only to his brother.

He played some great shortstop, especially in the postseason last year. It's a lot easier for fans to remember that he went 6/54 at the plate in the 2013 post season than that he played nearly flawless defence against three great teams

He was 23/131at the plate this year. I never hated either Drew, but I am glad to see him go. I think we got the best of him last year (as so many things came together for so many Red Sox players.)

Presuming you mean Nomar is one.... John Valentin isn't #2?

Yes, because it take seeing a "Shaughnessy loving Bostonian who can't form their own opinion" to not be a fan of the Sox resigning him this year and being critical of the fact that - while remembering how well he played last year - he absolutely sucked on his return, got way overpaid for his suck and moved X off of short, which may or may not have contributed to his spiral for a while, but at least delayed making a decision on him staying there long term, just when he was starting to settle into the position.

But yeah, Adam Dunn.
I don't fault Stephen Drew for his struggles this year. Nor do I have irrational hatred towards Drew for a decision that Ben Cherington made.

Ummm...congrats?

Who do you fault for him being a steaming like of dog shit this year? Please tell me it was Boras' fault.

You don't need to have an irrational hatred of him, nor a Saughnessy level of whatever bs you just spewed to not have been a fan of Drew coming back this year or being critical of what he did thereafter.
Both your post and Yaz4's either forget about or pretend that there weren't 1000s of posts last year arguing that Jose Iglesias should be the everyday shortstop and lamenting the fact that Iglesias was traded instead of Drew.

I was thinking Drew's defense beats out Valentin, but there may have been a year or two where Val's offense was so good that I should amend that to 3rd best.

By the time I was paying attention, Burleson was having bad offensive seasons regularly and on his way to shoulder surgery en route to the Angels. But, strictly speaking he'd need to be in the discussion too.

Totally agree. Terrific player.  Will probably succeed Jeter at short for the Yanks and do a fine job there for the next couple of years.  Of all of Ben's moves this trade deadline, this one will go down as the one where he not only got taken but he helped out the Yanks bigtime.

Drew was hitting at a .770 post AS break clip, so he was back to his career average after that horrendous start trying to have his spring training in the middle of the season.  That was a mess.

Drew drove in the only run of yesterday's game against Porcello. Arrrrgh! With Drew heating up post ASB, I've gotta think Ben hesitated to help the Yankees, $4M savings be damned. Obviously, all of the aforementioned need to get WMB and X reps was the reason. OK'ing a giveaway to the MFY -- as opposed to stapling him to the bench -- must also have been a courtesy to Drew himself for being a good egg. So they let him show off his skills for two months somewhere.

But please god, don't let him push the MFY through to the ALDS.

He hasn't gone all Aaron Small just yet. His NY batting #s are worse than his Boston #s were.
