Got a bit of the Steffi Graf upbringing in her. Reading between the lines, it seemed like a somewhat monochromatic childhood.Sofia’s parents came from Moscow to the US with $300 in their pocket. Good investment using that on a tennis racquet for their infant daughter.
Yeah, this is the best thing about it, you need constant focus and this part is even harder IMO for the women in a way because they only play 2 of 3 sets, so they have less margin for error. When I used to play a bit, it always made me feel good that even the best players in the world just lost their shit for stretches, missing easy shots.Tennis really requires an insane amount of mental fortitude. I can’t imagine losing a set like that one after busting my ass for an hour plus and then coming out having to win another set just to have a chance to win a third.
It just makes no sense. Two women's semifinals and one men's semifinal on the Thursday, and just the one men's semifinal on the Friday. Why not put one women's SF in each slot (afternoon + evening) on Thursday, and one men's SF in each slot on Friday? This is my favorite tournament of the year, ahead of the US Open, but every year I say it, it is SO DUMB AND UNFAIR to have one men's semi a day before the other one. Djokovic is sitting around resting while these guys pummel each other.
This one was almost a conflict of interest, Evert has known her from Florida since she was tiny.I forgot at times how much I hate watching US tv coverage of an event that includes an American, especially on the women's side. It is very much like watching a biased home team announcer in baseball or hockey. Tough when you don't really have a rooting interest (Like both players)
Yeah I can see it, and I guess she resembles Simona Halep as well in terms of size and gameKenin is much older at 21 and not nearly as good but she reminds me a bit of peak Hingis in her relentlessness and small size, so much power via perfect timing and balance. She lost some epic games early but came back from game points down a whole bunch of times after that, really hard fought impressive win.
