This is the outcome I wanted as an Eagles fan, an Andy Reid fan, and a Mahomes fan. I think the Eagles have an advantage on both sides of the balls here talent wise and scheme wise.

Hurts is clearly still not 100%, but I think he can just go something like 18-26 for 170 yards and the Eagles can still win this game. It’s one of the rare times where the opposing QB does not have to be amazing to beat Mahomes.

Two highest scoring teams in the league but with much different styles. I think this will be a good matchup. Mahomes’ ankle looms large in this one. He clearly won’t be 100% or probably close to it and Philly has a tenacious DL. KC’s running game had been decent lately but was nonexistent today. The KC supporting cast outside of Kelce just isn’t very impressive and two of those guys (Juju/Toney) got hurt today.

Philly looks like the better and healthier team but Hurts’ shoulder may not be right yet either. KC did a good job on Cincy’s RBs today, especially Mixon. He was a complete non factor.

Rooting for Philly feels yucky. I have a feeling Mahomes pulls one out in a similar fashion as last night.

I came to the conclusion l this morning that since an asteroid strike is highly unlikely I’m going to hold my nose and hope the Eagles win. I realized my level of hatred for the Chiefs is greater than my hatred of all things Philly.

Really don’t share the antipathy that you guys have, especially with Hill no longer on the Chiefs. Bummed about the Bengals though.

Gawd, but it’s really close isn’t it?

It’s that awful feeling you get when you know you’re coming down with something, but you can’t throw it up and you can’t shit it out.

Give me the Eagles by more than one score. Too much depth on defense and that KC defense won’t get home on Hurts they way they did vs Burrow. This is a bad matchup for the Chiefs.

I agree. Philadelphia just steamrolled the top ranked defense for 32 points right after smoking the Giants the week before. I think Philadelphia is better across the board at every position except QB but Mahomes is dinged up and he will be going against a great defense in 2 weeks Philadelphia probably should win by two touchdowns.

Steamrolled? Philly had 269 yards of offense. They were 5-15 on 3rd down. Hurts didn’t look great yesterday and SF defense was put into an impossible position all game due to the offense. I didn’t see a steamrolling yesterday by the Philly offense. I saw a game where one team was playing with one arm tied behind its back.

Now, I do agree that Philly is not a good matchup for KC. Hurts is the x-factor here. If he plays well, goodnight. KC loses. If he’s still a little hurt, shows some SB jitters, etc., I think KC has a shot. Experience is their one big advantage. Most of Philly’s team outside of a few (Lane, Cox, Graham) haven’t really gone through this. Sometimes that matters, sometimes it doesn’t. Ultimately, I think Philly wins because that DL is outright wrecking people on a consistent basis and KC cannot run to keep them honest. KC did get the screen game going a bit so maybe we’ll see more of that.

Depends on how much the Eagles will have to overcome from the "12th man".

The Eagles didn't try for the entirety of the 2nd half.

Then look at the first half. Their first TD was aided by a bad call. Their second TD drive was good. Their 3rd TD drive was a gift from Josh Johnson. This wasn’t a steamrolling.

Yeah, count me among those that weren't impressed with the Eagles in the slightest this weekend. I think the Patriots could beat the Josh Johnson led 49ers with Bosa and Warner injured by 14+ as well. It's very easy to look great in the NFL against a non competitive QB.

Have to take Philly: the 49ers defense is at another level from KC's, and Philly will find more big plays in the passing game against a far inferior secondary.

Mahomes won't be able to run much, which lets the Philly pass rush pin its ears back.

Hurt Mahomes is better than hurt Hurts, but that's the only thing I see that KC has going for it on either side of the ball.

Agreed. Philly is clearly the better team to me. They also look like the healthier team. KC will need Mahomes to be great and probably get some ref/turnover luck to win this. I see Hurts running all over KC and their WRs should have good games as well. Won’t be easy for KC.

It will be fascinating to see how the NFL reacts to the firestorm about officiating. Will they let everything go and call as few penalties as possible, or will it be ticky-tack flag theater for 3 hours? I'd bet on the former.

They will ignore it and revel in the controversy and just plow ahead You figure there are more fans of the Chiefs than the Bengals, so the one sided reffing makes more people happy. People are talking about the NFL. #NFLrigged is trending, which the NFL probably loves.

Granted, the NFL is a handful of inches from being the WWE. But people love the WWE.

Still, so infuriating. I was rooting for the Bengals but I'm not a Bengals "fan". And I am crushed. Their fans must be agog. Because that was just a garbage game.

Bummed about this matchup. I feel the way about Mahomes the way the rest of the nation felt about Brady for most of his NE tenure (whiny, commentators shower him with comments like the second coming, etc.) and I feel the way about the Eagles fanbase the way the rest of the nation feels about the Pats fanbase (loud, arrogant, entitled, the only team that matters, everyone against them forever and always, etc.). If the Eagles team was in KC, I would probably even be actively cheering for them. But they are not, so go Mahomes, I guess. That said... I think the Eagles take this one sadly.

I'd be curious to know if the stats align, but my impression was always that the SB is reffed with the intent of letting the game flow as much as possible (i.e., only the most egregious common fouls like holding and PI get flagged). CCGs are the last real football games of the year, the SB is an event that just happens to be produced by the NFL.

Philly has had an easy ride all year. What is their most impressive win? Cooper Rush Cowboys? GB? Wins against the well-coached but flawed Giants? A QB-less Niners team? They are fantastic in the trenches. I think they have a better defense but KC has Mahomes and the better QB usually wins. I just think KC is more battle-tested. They have quality wins, and their losses were to the Bills, Bengals, and that weird early-in-the-season game against the Colts.

I'll bet this Patrick kid (left column) is conflicted today. It's not clear whether he likes the Eagles in the Super Bowl, or Andy Reid coached teams. Hopefully someone, presumably in Tyler, can get clarification. He was wrong so he doesn't know football anyway.

I think they are pretty good but the Eagles have not really had a tough matchup all year. By DVOA they had the second-easiest schedule and they played Dallas once without Dak (and lost to them with Dak healthy and no Hurts). SF was obviously not at full strength either. They split the series with Washington (9th in DVOA) and other than that their only win against a team higher than 19th in DVOA was against Pittsburgh in week 8.

Like I said I think they are good because you play the schedule you're dealt and blowing out bad teams matters, but they haven't really faced a true test so it's hard to get a read on them vs. the top teams.

KC was in the bottom few in terms of strength of schedule wins as well. Their best one was probably the Jags.

By DVOA the Chiefs were 29th in SoS, but they have wins over SF (1st in DVOA) and SEA (10th) and of course the Bengals with all teams close to full strength.

It all comes down to the health of the Chiefs the next two weeks. If the wide receivers come back healthy plus the secondary injuries and maybe Mahomes gets close to normal.

If Mahomes is close to normal say 85%, one simply cannot chose Hurts over him. You just can't. If he's still hurt and throwing to Marcus Kemp... it seems like the Eagles would be too much.

The few betting sharps I listen to were all in on Philly over the summer. I don’t think they’re just a product of a soft schedule.

But for losing to them in the Super Bowl, I don’t really get the mentality of, “I’ll root for Philadelphia because I hate them only a tiny bit less than KC.”

KC employs and has employed some truly terrible humans without remorse. Whereas most NFL teams rank a 1 or 2 out of 10 on a morals scale, KC is a negative billion. Their fans yell racist chants throughout the game and don’t care. Their team and QB are the closest to establishing a post-NE dynasty.

And Philadelphia fans also hate NY. This isn’t close.

His delivery looked off on his deep balls. He looked like he was putting his whole self into a couple of them.

I have always felt a little sports kinship to Philly. Similar levels of rabid fandom (OK, not the cheering neck injuries, booing Santa stuff, but you know what I mean), second city inferiority complex, east coast miserableness (I mean character!). I also think their football team is managed really well and they make smart, creative decisions. I’ll be rooting for them all the way in the SB. I hate KC not primarily because of the morality stuff, which is loathesome but so are all the teams to a degree, but because I also feel an irrational need to protect the Pats historical dynasty by rooting against their competitors.

It’s fun to root for a team that owns a young, innovative coaching staff. Sirianni went for it twice on fourth down in first half against SF, and we all knew it was coming. Eagles have turned QB sneaks into a multi-pronged play.

The other positions on the field matter a lot too, particularly the trenches and the secondary, and the Eagles probably have a bigger advantage at those positions than they did in LII against the Pats.

You know, I had this thought at first. I certainly didn't want this matchup. But I don't have to root to watch. These are two very good teams and it should be a great game. I'll be watching. Maybe the refs will be even worse and I'll get some comedy out of it as I have no rooting interest.

Fully agree. It's a pair of 1 seeds. It's not as easy to watch for us as say Bengals-Rams was last year. But it should be a great game.

The 2017 Patriots were in a tie for the worst defense in football by DVOA. This year's Chiefs are middle of the pack. I don't think they go into this game as overmatched on that side of the ball as the Patriots were, especially if they don't bench their best corner on top of it.

That AFCCG was the biggest bag job I've ever seen, prior to that it was the 1976 AFC playoff game Patriots/Raiders, that was the worst one ever, but that shitshow yesterday takes the cake.

And when is the NFL going to can that rugby formation pile push teams now use on QB sneaks and close to the goal line, not sure when that became a thing, but it's complete and utter bullshit to be able to push a guy into the end zone or forward for a first down, as if the NFL wasn't a big enough clownshow to begin with.

The worst was when they gave KC a first down when their receiver reached the ball towards the line to gain, then voluntarily pulled it back, and was a yard short when his knee hit the ground. They gave him "forward progress" even though the rule explicitly says that's not how you rule on that kind of play (except for the goal line). That call even went to replay, where they had time to converse and collaborate and STILL essentially broke the rules in order to give KC a first down.
