Sent my first batch to COMC, so those will probably upload in like half a year or something and I can start recouping some cash from the glut of cards in play which is nice.

In the interest of the Sox theme, I found what I found to be a reasonably good deal and pulled the trigger on 2/3 of the Red Sox Downtowns and the two regular HFAs. That just leaves the two legendary HFAs (Papi and Ted Williams) as well as the Mookie downtown which...well that may be out of range for a long while given the budget buster I just got (which I'll show when it comes in, I'm super happy with what that one). I think the Boston ones are one of the small handful of those that I prefer the HFAs to the Downtowns on but I get the Downtown Hype more after holding one and seeing in person.

One thing I don't think I'll ever be able to do well in this hobby is figure out grading systems. I just finished my 1998 SP Chirography set (once I get it in a display case I'll post the whole family - there are some cards in there I'd like to improve condition due to autograph or surface issues but I have all 30), and I just got the Griffey in today. I had been on the hunt for a Griffey for a while now , given the substantial cost of the card and relative rarity (Limited to 400 but as a redemption, so some of those never saw the light of day) it was waiting for the right one for my budget. There was a severely creased one that sold for $500 that was just a step too far condition wise, and a raw one that sold for $1,250 with a black signature (the blue turns to black on these cards really easily, several of my upgrade opportunities are black ink), and then an SGC 8.5 and PSA9 that just went beyond what I wanted to pay. I won an auction for a BGS7 that was marked down due to a 6 subgrade on the edges and...man, I don't see it at all. I'm sure it's there but like I don't think I could ever mark it down as far as BGS did. Very happy with the card.

I think it was the back right edge (slightly rough cut or maybe minor pitting), but you could only see it if you zoom in, and I wouldn't even notice if I weren't looking for it. If you were to cover the label, you'd be hard-pressed to tell it apart from the BGS 9 based on a quick eyeball test. Their loss is your gain!

I appreciate the better set of eyes. I think some of the subgrades may have been a tad generous in the other direction so I'm certainly not mad, but man...if nothing else this will encourage me to go for more lower grade cards if I honestly can't tell with the number in front of me. Certainly not worth the 1k+ "upgrade" to the 9...

Now to upgrade some of the remainder who were more place holder buys, the one big shame of these 90s UD autos is that they used so many marker/surface combos that ink fading is rampant. Normally I wouldn't care but the vibrant blue looks so much better than the faded to black versions.

This is a super long shot, but does anyone have a 2023 Topps Series 2 Golden Mirror Conner Capel #418 for sale? I haven't seen one anywhere other than one sold on eBay this week. Below is what it looks like:

I'd be tempted to crack that out of the slab and send it to PSA.

Picked this one up. It's not by any means the most rare Ohtani rookie. But hot damn is he amazing and I love the look of this one.

So, I'm not ever one to promote Reddit sales of all things, but a Sox collector on there is cashing out due to some personal life items - he's the one I bought the Downtowns/HFAs I posted earlier and he has some really great Sox short prints and memorabilia. Worth a look.

Love seeing all the cards posts from the awesome collectors on here. I’ve taken a bit of a tumble in my mental health so I had to step back from work for a bit. I’m looking to sell off a lot of my collection. Hope they can go to another awesome Sox fan! : redsox (reddit.com)

Picked up this Rickey rookie. Massive differences in prices between 7s, 8s, and 9s on this one. Iconic card of an iconic player. Snagged this 7 because the issues appear to centering ones and I’ve seen worse on 8s.68021

I collected NBA trading cards When i was a kid. Being from Germany, there wasn‘t much to choose from, 30years ago…

Now, i plan on buying some boxes for (imo) decent prices (like 200-500€), keep them for 10-20 years and then sell them.
Has anyone in here ever done that succesfully (1.buying,2.keeping it for 10+ years and 3.sell with a profit)??
Which boxes would you recommend trying that strategy with (no matter which sports/pokemon/…)??

Thx !

The centering issue appears to be that it’s a little too high? Because of the fact that the name is in the top border, that almost looks normal. Good buy. He’s a legend.

It mostly appears to be the rear centering. And likely the corners - a little. I don’t know. Card isn’t yet in hand. But I have looked at these for months and this is at least a nice 7. I paid $120 for this.

SGC 8 goes for $250
SGC 8.5 goes for $440
SGC 9 goes for $1600-$2000
SGC 9.5 about $10,000
SGC 10 about $50,000

But look at the rear centering issues on this 10:

http://goldinauctions.com/1980_topps__482_rickey_henderson_rookie_card___sgc-lot86194.aspx

They are very similar to the card I bought pictured below. I don’t do this for the money. I won’t crack and resubmit or anything. I’m happy with a good looking 7 here. There could also be other issues as I don’t yet have the card in hand.

However if I were an investor in the card space I wouldn’t bet on rookies so much as bet on cards that could grade higher than whatever their current grade. But something like this for $100-$120, spend $10 and send to SGC and potentially double your money if it grades an 8.

This is a tough question to ask, because 10-20 years ago or so, the card market was so, so different than it is now.

The market then was saturated with huge volume and very few products. Cards from the 90's, early 2000's (and earlier) are worth almost nothing compared to what folks paid for them, unless you have a unicorn laying around.

The values really took off about 10 years ago, but then grew exponentially during the pandemic. This was also when autographed cards, jersey cards, numbered cards and short prints came about.

So yes, there is a possibility for profit in 10+ years of holding, but the reality is the rookie cards that have value on the day of release will almost all lose value at the rate of a new car. Sure, if you get lucky and get a few of whoever the next Lebron or Tatum and sit on those for a decade, you're going to come out ahead, but there are a lot more Caleb Swanigan's and Lonzo Balls and Greg Oden's than there are Lebrons and those guys cards will never be worth more than they are the day you buy the box.

I did the National today. My body hurts. Picked up a couple Yaz pieces from the guy with the best documented Yaz collection on PSA.com. Saw an old dealer buddy from VT I hadn't seen in 25 years or so. Only spent about $400, largely because Chase apparently has my daily withdrawal limit set to $500. That saved me $300. lol .

Anyway, got a guy on the phone that seemed super helpful (I've done this dance many times, so I'm not holding my breath) and we talked for a while. Basically, he said for any cards I don't want to wait for, he can order NBA Prizm Sparkle Packs for each (the packs retail for about $75, and you do have a chance of hitting something in them), so I told him to replace the Correia/Jefferson/Mariota/Crabbe redemptions with those. He said he would put those in immediately and they would ship in 2-3 weeks.

He said he was on the phone with his fulfillment team regarding the others. He said for the 1/1 Logoman, they can send a "White Box" which is a 1/1 mystery card. I told him go for it, but he said that could take a few months to go out. And he said he would have them replace the remaining cards with autographed cards of equal or greater value, and that he would call me in an hour or two (this was about 2 hours ago, no call) and confirm everything.

I guess we'll see.

During my research into white boxes, I did find this though. https://cardlines.com/panini-white-box-card-redemption/#:~:text=White Box is a way,a certain number of days.

According to that, you can request a white box for any redemption over $100, which isn't true. He said they only use them to replace 1/1's or cards valued over $1,000.00.

They did similar black boxes at the National via appointment, some had insane cards and some, well, had nice 1/1s but nowhere near the trade ins. Hope you get lucky with yours, I'd have done the same thing you did at this point

UPDATE:

It does not appear I am getting a white box. Shocking that something got lost in translation, but it appears they are replacing the Bosa, Jaylen Browns, Jamal Murray, Carroll, Ewing and DeRozen cards with the following, as I got an email last night saying they have been shipped. When I checked my account with Panini, all of those redemptions had been closed out.

1248811 2022 Playoff Contenders Rookie Ticket RPS Kenny Pickett Pittsburgh Steelers QB Redemption Code :9CBFJFEGKDH #127( / ) 1
1248811 2020 Panini Immaculate Collection (20-21) Rookie Patch Autographs Red LaMelo Ball Charlotte Hornets G Redemption Code :9CBFJFEGKDH #112(45 / 49) 1
1248811 Prizm Sparkle Pack (x5) | Basketball | 1.00

I believe the Pickett card is going for around $400-$600 right now.

The Lamelo goes for around $1,000 (can be quite a bit higher) depending on how good the jersey patch is.

And then the 5 sparkle packs, it appears.

Strangely, they did not close out the Crabbe, Mariota, Jefferson and Correia cards, which I had asked them to replace with sparkle packs.

According to the tracking information, should be delivered tomorrow and then I'll take picks and let you all know. All in all, definitely lost money in the long run, but happy to have this off my plate finally.

My next set build is absolutely going to be a cheaper one, I need to avoid these sets with one massive card and several big ones. With that said, I'm really happy with how this one turned out.

It started in my side pursuit to build up my Sox PC when I found the Mo Vaughn from this set, and some nostalgic 90s memories came flooding back to me. I picked up the Mo and nine or so of the lower/end cheaper ones that were consigned in a batch and loved how they looked in person, so I started pursuing the whole set. I quickly realized that this wouldn't be that easy - the cards all appear in time but some of the biggest names were shortprinted and a reasonable number are $25, $50, $100, or in the case of one, $1000+ card. I got somewhat fortunate that there was a seller or two who either had a complete set or near complete set who was liquidating out which helped me fill in some of the more difficult names, albeit with lower grade versions (there's 10ish cards of the 30 I'd like to upgrade due to faded or black signatures as the blue just pops so much better, the prices were just too good on some of those really hard to find names that I'll deal with the buy and upgrade for Gwynn, Chipper, and Nomar in particular).

The better half got me a display case so I finally pulled the crew together. I don't think it stacks up to the signed living set posted here but it's real nice regardless.

A quick review of this set

1998 SP Authentic - Chirography - a 30 Autograph on-card set which to me is peak Upper Deck and peak 90s - foil backed photos with ample room for a signature and for my money the cleanest (or among the cleanest) designed auto cards of the era. Highlights Include

Nine Hall of Famers - Chipper Jones (/800), Ivan Rodriguez, Ken Griffey Jr (/400 and a Redemption so likely less), Mike Mussina, Paul Molitor, Roberto Alomar (/800), Scott Rolen, Tony Gwynn (/850), and Vladimir Guerrero
Several Stars - Alex Rodriguez (/800), Andruw Jones, Gary Sheffield, Roger Clemens, (/400), and Todd Helton
Two Red Sox Icons- Mo Vaughn (/800) and Nomar Garciaparra (/400)
Numerous Fan Favorites: Darin Erstad, Livan Hernandez, Paul Konerko, and Sean Casey

One of the more fortunate elements cost wise is that many of the young stars they chose didn't really pan out to be the stars collectors hoped for - Jose Cruz Jr., Travis Lee, Russell Branyan, and Ben Grieve carrier a substantial amount of hope for their franchises and while they largely had good careers, they never turned into those franchise carrying stars. If anything that's a good reminder for prospect hunters that it's not all rainbows - but had Adrian Beltre or Roy Halladay found their way into this set it might've been even more prohibitive.

Funny enough, some of the difficult ones to find weren't necessarily the big stars or the short prints. Not surprisingly the HoFers in short prints as were all tough as were any short printed players really, but even some of the more common players were a hunt to find. Ray Lankford and Charles Johnson in particular stand out (though CJ has at least a few copies on COMC now). I think for some of these guys they just didn't end up in many officially licensed autographed sets due to their heyday falling just before it or for other reasons. Lankford has a few, I think Charles Johnson had one or two.

For as much as I like a lot of the hobby today, I think Topps autograph sets tend to save their best and cleanest designs for their high end cards, so this was a lot of fun to put together and display. I'd love to upgrade some of these condition wise but for now I think I'll just let it be and enjoy.

Panini be Panini I guess. It's kinda funny how it's Lamelo Ball of all people given he's been the poster boy for failed redemption signings over the past few years, I'm guessing you're getting someone else's unfulfilled item on that one. Honestly not the worst output but, as usual, sobering given the amount of time and effort you had to put in to get what you got.

Oh yeah, all of the Ball Immaculate rookie cards were redemptions, and so is the Pickett card. There are even less Pickett's on the market from Contenders than there are Balls, so you are 100% right. They got those cards signed, and when the redemptions expired without a ticket being opened, they turn around and use those cards to fill the redemptions they never got signed. It's a nice gig, sell two boxes with redemptions, but only have to give out the product once.

Love that 1998 SP set. I don't think I have any of them (the late 90's, early 2000's is when I took a break from cards), but if I come across anything in my digging, I'll be happy to give them to you.

In Panini news, NT Football is out today, with a $3000 price tag? They're insane. Three autographs and seven other cards for $3000...with THAT 2022 class?

I am wondering if there's even like 5-10 cards in the product that would pay for the box.

The box break I watched was

TJ Watt Base
Tom Brady Insert (not a big chase one)
Aiden Hutchinson mem
Jerry Jeudy mem (player-work not game-worn)
Rashaad White/Cade Otten dual mem
Lamar Jackson mem
Okonkwo Auto (sticker)
Rod Smith auto (sticker)
Malik Willis jersey auto (on-card)
Alec Pierce RPA (on card)

Like...insane. That's what $500 back at most? Maybe $300?

Fanatics as a monopoly is concerning but Panini is just terrible sometimes

Cards showed up.

Here is the Pickett, sorry can't get it to rotate:

68939

From what I can tell, this card (2022 Panini Contenders Rookie Ticket Auto, non numbered) are going for $400-$500 raw.

Here is the Ball:

68940

With the 3 color patch, 2020-21 Immaculate LaMelo Ball Red RPA /49, these are going from $1,000-$1,200.

Here's one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/305038707679?hash=item4705b94bdf:g:yV8AAOSwFQFkvbB2&amdata=enc:AQAIAAAA4IP4FX8kcHIj4153HXmzwcxpc+u7Iq0OaCz/LEpprPVUj8J0pGInk512Jp3Jjyaa3e4BDnJV2Od2n/R6BtwoCUuiJcGMu+d22ArKpszwxs4JM3I0RJTimGQxH7PfWanUmPGubJbVWXzr2/47/g6EYXAq5/JDA1S31m4tUPjw0h7scdiG6EezF2LEds/5+Xe+Ye8iOQ9e/C2ttwk1yhsooal+7P3vErTbV3YVqLk7LJEu5xn1ksD9AjKFkLr83B6wtgWjh/EFU/gqxZpsgkw67QTNw/4FrjRhc6fXv/KCVSDk|tkp:Bk9SR8ygiYy8Yg

But this was the bonus. First four sparkle packs were nothing special, then I opened the last one and found this:

68941

It's 2022-23 Prizm Gold Sparkle #/24. Figured it might be worth $50 or so, given it's not a rookie, but nope:

This one sold a couple weeks ago for $300:

All in all, could have been a lot worse, I guess. Certainly would have been better had I gotten the cards during the pandemic, or when the products released, but it's behind me now...

Recently I randomly bought a few Pokemon card packs mostly out of nostalgia from when I built the first four sets back in the late 90s and early 00s (before most of them got stolen which, well, double edged sword there...). I was genuinely surprised to see what came out of them. I was very much used to the 60-80 card sets from the past with a fairly simple four tiered structure (commons which were 4-6 a pack, uncommons which were 2-3 a pack, and then a rare card that could be holographic, which were the chases). Now, there's so much more going on. You have those three tiers, but you also have double rares, full art cards (so instead of the tiny window, the entire card is like the picture with the moves written inside of it), golden cards, reverse holos. None of it was truly insanely rare (I think I've seen a gold every other box on a handful of breaks I saw), boxes are 36 packs for $110 or so from what I've seen so it's cheap, and most importantly the cards can be really unique looking. I've picked up a handful of singles from the set that I really liked but I almost want to build it now.

I know Topps, Panini, Leaf etc. dabble in artistic cards but it's mostly an on-demand item. I wonder if they did a 200 card set of MLB stars drawn in a more cartoonish or absurd style, and put it out as a rippable product if it would see major success. Even without the associated games I think it could do really well and would be a super fun opening
