I'm out to dinner so once Cellar picks again, I should have something up in a short while. Today went quick huh?

15 picks since midnight with hopefully more lined up.  Typically it takes us a few days to run through the middle of the order like that.

Saved and forwarded. Have fun in the dog house.
Yours was the first message that popped up when I clicked the thread. For a second I was actually worried you had done that.

Sorry, missed the Presley pick.

Alright instead we'll go with this guy:
26 years old, plays good defense with a strong arm at the corner (Best Arm in two different teams' system in 2011 according to BA)
Runs the bases well, and can kinda sort of hit.
Edit- also he hits lefties much better for his career, an advantage with lefty starters at both my corner OF positions

I wanted him Cellar. I think when he gets more playing time he'll be a pretty good player.

Tim Federowicz, C

With Federowicz the Wibis enter the mustachio wars.  Federowicz had a slash line of .294/.371/.461 at AAA in 2012 and calls a great game.  Federowicz slots in nicely as the backup C and potential starting C should Wilin not pan out as expected.

I like FedEx. I think his numbers are a little PLC aided but I think he'll be a decent hitter, with good defense.

Well, it was a great day yesterday for the draft but things don't look so hot today.  RGB hasn't been on since Wednesday night.
I don't know. He seems to appear within minutes every time someone says something.

I'll take this break in the action to announce that in honor of the remarkable ability of the Italian team to make it all the way to Round 2 in the World Baseball Classic this year I am moving my team to become the first Italian major league baseball team, the Roma Legio X.  To facilitate beginning of major league baseball in Italy the Italian Parliament has made the controversial decision to redesign the Colosseum of Rome into a baseball stadium that will have the exact in-game park effects of Petco park in San Diego, only without being hideously ugly or having a ridiculous corporate name.  Media mogul and perpetual prime minister Silvio Berlusconi will throw out the first pitch this April.

Work got in the way today, I thought I was going to be able to pick earlier but things just kept coming up and I am not at a desk with a computer at all so it is difficult.  Frank, please show me with a link where I took 23 hours to make a pick as I dont remember that happening at all.  I am very dedicated to this and do try, usually when I know I am going to be away I send a proxy to MakMan who helps me speed it up.

With no further delay RGB selects JOSE VERAS Bullpen

Tell me that is not an intimidating looking guy?

Veras is now a closer for the Astros, so he might close out both of their victories this season.  Veras does walk too many people, which so far seems to be a problem in my bullpen.  However over the last 3 seasons he has over 10 k/9, an ERA and an xFIP of under 3.9.

2010-  10.13 K/9  3.75 ERA, 4.06 FIP, 3.80 xFIP
2011-  10.01 k/9, 3.80 ERA, 3.50 FIP, 3.87 xFIP
2012-  10.61 k/9, 3.63 ERA, 3.59 FIP, 3.84 xFIP

The 6'6" Veras has a mid 90's fastball and a devastating curveball, if he can consistently get those pitches over the plate he could really help out my pen, however this is a major gamble.

I'm not going through this thread post by post, so I will just assume I was wrong.

Being in my job, on top of being married for 8 years now, I have learned that my day tends to go a lot better if I just wake up assuming this.

They're going to set a record for fewest save opportunities in a season.

Steve Johnson - P

12% SwStr%, solid numbers even with the > 10% BB% last year. The good news is the walk rate has trended down at the minor league level the last couple of years, so hopefully he'll get into single digits with some more MLB experience. Looking over his peripherals, his floor projects to be about that as some of the relievers which have come off the board already, but he probably has the upside of a #3 guy or a late-inning, high-leverage relief arm.

For now we'll move him to the bullpen, and he should be a useful setup man, however, he did exhibit some success in the rotation last year, so he'd be an option to move into a starting role should someone like Randall Delgado struggle.

The Legio X enlist:

Fernando Martinez, OF

Martinez was a classic overhyped New York prospect - a can't miss sensation who totally missed.  The Mets gave up on him after 5 years of injuries and up and down performance, and he made his way to the island of misfit toys known as the Houston Astros, where he put up a surprising .229 ISO and plus defense in 130 totally acceptable plate appearances last year.  Somehow he's still just 24, so if he can actually stay healthy for another year he coud re-establish himself post-hype as an average outfielder in a Jeff Francouer kind of way.  Martinez will be my fourth outfielder and first bat off the bench.

Jeff Karstens, RP4 (SP6)

With questions about Greinke's ability to start the season I need to go even deeper with rotation depth.  Karstens is kind of boring but he did manage to put up a 3.32 FIP behind pinpoint control last year, and while he's unlikely to ever throw much beyond 150 innings he fits my needs as rotation depth and swingman.  FWIW (I'm sure you all are tracking this carefully), I have him sixth on the starting depth chart ahead of Maronde who I'd rather have in the bullpen.

Karstens was a guy I had just about even with Capuano back almost 2 rounds ago.  If he were around another couple of rounds I'd have gone ahead and drafted a 7th starter just for the value.  In other words, nice pick.

Alex Castellanos - IF

All Castellanos has done the last three years in the minors (albeit in the PCL) has hit. Guys like Gyorko and Adam Eaton get all the pub, but he's actually had a better wOBA than both of them. I'm not saying he's a better hitter (he does strike out a lot), but between his MLEs and projections, he looks like he has the chance to be an above-average offensive contributor in the majors.

He also brings amazing positional versatility. He came up as a 2B but has played all over the infield and corner OF during his time in the minors. He even got time in CF during the VWL this offseason. He's not an elite defender at any spot but I've yet to find a scout say he's awful, either. And in Round 20, that's good enough for me.

Frank, I did go through each one, it never happened.  Longest was 7 and a 1/2 hours, which was today, second was 7 hours.  Not a big deal, just wanted to correct a misremembery as Roger Clemens would say.

RGB selects Carlos Corporan C Astros

Carlos is known as a good pitch caller and solid defender as a catcher who will hit with power occasionally.  In 68 AAA games in 2012 Corporan had a 102 wRC+, in 27 MLB games Corporan had a 105 wRC+.  I am going to use Corporan as a backup who can field the position above average according to most scouting reports.  I am taking this guy purely for emotional and personal reasons, which is why I would not be a good GM.  This guy suffered an awful setback when his 16 month old child died last season after 4 heart surgeries.  I know how that feels and I want to root for this man, so I drafted him.  Plus he is known as an above average catcher and my starting catcher is below average so what he lacks in his offense he can hopefully make up in his pitch calling and defense.

Your first paragraph made me happy, as it is a joy to see Frank proven wrong but damn, that second paragraph...

That really sucks, I don't know if I could.come back from losing a kid like that.

Johnson, F Mart, and Castellanos are all really good picks. I'm sure all of our lists are beginning to look very similar.

F Mart got some consideration over Hairston from me, and Castellanos is one I really thought would make it back to me as a utility infielder.  Both are definitely good picks.

Time for a flyer

Sergio Santos, RP

Santos would have been the closer for Toronto in 2012 if shoulder issues hadnt sidelined him for the season after just 6 games.  Santos comes into 2013 looking to rebound into something more healthy.  When Santos is healthy his stuff is electric which can be good and bad.  When Santos is on he makes bats miss and when he isnt he walks batters.  Santos will slot into the 3rd BP slot for the Wibis and will begin the 2013 season in the setup role.

I like the Santos pick. I may have selected him if he got back to me. Sounds like he's healthy and when he's on he's got a lot of upside
