And the sad part is, basketball is probably the sport he knows best.
It’s kind of like Andy Gresh. That dude is a moron about football and that’s the sport he knows best.
I dunno. He played D1 football. I'm sure he knows some stuff about it.

I'm not loving how often Rich talks about how his nipples are hard. I hope he finds another way to indicate that he's excited about something.

I don't think we're ever hearing from Char again either. Bummer.

He wanted to trade both of them for AD. He wasn’t alone but it was probably 18 months of segments about it. In the Twitch chat it was a running joke for 5 years. Rich is a moron around sports
If we're comparing Fred and Rich, Fred's Jonathan Isaac is better than JT take was also pretty asinine. I can tell you I know even less than Rich and Fred do, and both of them are better than Wallach who knows 10% of what he thinks he knows, and is 200% certain.

In contrast to your preferred morning host (Fred), Rich has never professed to be an expert on sports, nor has he taken his fandom too seriously.
I consider Fred a low-key expert in baseball. Unfortunately I'm not really into baseball.
which is why it’s so dumb he’s doing a sports talk show on a classic rock station. Music is his true wheelhouse
If I could change this show I would like to hear a lot more "music and movies I like and why" and quite a bit less Sports Blippi.

I don't like the doodoo bits much but I can ignore them. I have to fast forward through the AI bits and anything Steven A Smith related.

Fred's owned his awful Isaac take for years. He even did it in the last 10 days.

Is this confirmed? I know that her primary job is the Oddball (basketball) podcast for Meadowlark Media, and she has been obviously on location with the Celtics Finals run and just appeared on the Le Batard show this morning to report on the NBA draft. If Oddball is on hiatus during part of the summertime, it would be opportune for her to make more appearances on the radio show.

We’re over a month into the show and she’s appeared once. That was during the first week. I think it’s safe to say she ain’t coming back.

I could be wrong… the co-host announcement video is still pinned on the ZLX insta account, so what do I know?

I just turned it on during a break and they had AI generated Bill Belichick voice reading movie quotes. That’s creepy as hell and not cool at all. Using AI to create audio clips of someone without their permission is bullshit.

He isn’t calling it “Fart Court”. It’s now “The Flatulence Bureau of Investigation” or whatever. He tweeted a photo of him, Hurley and Ted Johnson posing in FBI jackets, which has been deleted. the audio was the poker tournament where one of the players were ripping farts and the commentators couldn’t help but crack up. That was played on T&H last year. It bugs me. I know it’s stupid that it does. Like, come up with something that will make me want to change the channel and tune in.
No, that should bug you. Playing a rerun of another show and acting like it's brand new is incredibly lame and lazy. I get that that was in the running for best Fart Court of all time, but he was off the air for months and couldn't come up with other material?

Not really a surprise that TSH would dominate with the C's playoff run boost. But if Rich continues to flounder in the 2's during the summer stretch, then things might get ugly fast for him.
Undoubtedly true, but the optimistic take is that this weekly number represents the last week of the first month of a new show on a station with a format change entering the deadest month on the sports calendar. They are clearly figuring out what works and what doesn’t. It might be the best time of year to do it. I think they’ve definitely created a contrast with their primary competition (T&H), unlike TSH’s EEI competitors in the midday and afternoon.

They’ve been leaning more into rock music and pop culture discussions lately (perhaps due to the dearth of July sports activity). I’d like to see them keep this up as it fits well with Rich’s background as well as Hurley‘s and Young’s talent.

The presence of Giardi and Johnson as regular co-hosts entering Pats training camp should theoretically help them out, I think.

I'm sure they're looking at hourly and even break level ratings on what's working and what's not. I haven't listened a whole lot since I haven't had a ton of car time in the morning lately but I turn it on when I'm in the car and T&H is on a break. It's not bad at all, it's not great, but it's much better than the Hillman.

I’m not sure that’s the intent of Chad’s tweet, but I believe that’s the case. A different way to say it is that TRSS did a 3.2 in the demo in its first month. I don’t remember the sequence, but I seem to recall that there was a gap between when the old hosts were let go and when Rich started up, so there was some time for ZLX morning listeners to head somewhere else before Rich started. 3.7 for the overall three-month period in the morning, 3.2 for TRSS in the first month.

Yes, the third month (with Rich) was lower than their first two months of the book. Apologies if that was confusing.
All good Chad. I really do appreciate you participating in these threads. That’s what I thought you were getting at but wasn’t sure.

I hope TRSS gets better I just don’t see Hurley and Teddy J doing it.

Chad, any idea why Wilder Wednesdays was a one time deal? I’d listen every Wednesday if she was on.

I'm not sure. Used to work with her and we're friends. Reached out about why she hasn't been on but haven't heard back. I'll try again when I'm back from vacation.

It's also really weird for a radio show to use AI. Like, you're showing your bosses there's a way to outsource your job at 1/1000th the cost

They should use AI Rich Little doing an impression of Belichick reading movie quotes instead.

My gripes with the show:
  • AI is probably the worst thing about it. It is the opposite of "the next best thing".
  • Fart.B.I. sucks - that's an instant 'drag the progress bead halfway to the right' for me.
  • Too much poop and fart talk. "tell us about a time you pooped 617-931-1007"
  • "She's just 16 years old" over and over again is getting on my nerves.
  • The porno music is the radio equivalent of "that's what she said".
  • I'm tired of "my nipples are hard" and "cover yourself in peanut butter". I wish Rich would find another way to say he's excited about something.
  • A little of this Emerson dude goes a long way. Listening to him as much as they have him on is like eating an entire spoonful of MSG.
  • I really didn't like the 'Brian Windhorst is fat' break. Just mean. I know where to go if I want to listen to a jerk be mean to people.

Apropos of nothing (#RIPCafardo)... I thought it was both interesting, different, and risky for Rich to have a retired SS agent on the show this morning to discuss Saturday's assassination attempt. Risky in that the interview topic is incongruous with morning sports/music/pop culture discussion, could go off the rails from a political standpoint, and also risky because Rich isn't the greatest interviewer in the world. I wouldn't call the interview "exciting", but it was very interesting and I thought Rich did a really good job staying on topic. I also thought the former SS agent stuck to the topic (how are events like this set up and managed from a USSS/security standpoint) very well also and didn't venture off into more controversial areas.

I've been blown away by how much Rich's personality seems like a front now that things have changed. I figure he had some passionate excitement that comes off like manic energy but the more I've been listening it's weird little things.

When talking about when he was in San Diego just before the 2012 fireworks mishap, instead of simply saying he was staying at a hotel on Coronado Island he made this odd explanation about an "island off the coast." Normally, I wouldn't have thought much of it but it was not long after T&H had been making fun of Rich for his "three houses" and claiming to be going to the Cape when he was really going to his island house, it stood out like he was trying to muddle that part.

The show has started to hit something of a stride. It's not great, and wow were those first few weeks painful (replaying fart court and acting like it's new was a crime against humanity), brookline 911 went flat without necessary commentary, and the one that made me laugh out loud was the Charlotte Wilder stuff. I forget when it was, but it might have been week 2 or 3, they had a guest on that was talking about stuff and mentioned Charlotte, "Yeah, she was doing (forget the guy's name) show for Wilder Wednesdays. I'm not sure what happened with that." And the grunt Rich made seemed to say a whole lot.

Rich desperately needs someone who can balance him out. I can clearly see now why T&R was successful. On their own, they both are painful at times. Together, they balanced each other out and it created a lot of great radio. He needs to turn down this manic persona. It's 2024, not 2004.

So Rich creeped out Wilder in one day? Trenni vibes there.

I'm not sure if it was Rich that creeped her out. His reaction struck me as one of "we used the same name for her appearances here but no one was supposed to say it." So, when the phone guest mentioned he didn't know what happened to her on that other show it was also hilarious because, we knew.

Did anyone catch Rich mistakenly tweeting out that Zakk Wylder was joining them up next, on Toucher & Rich!

I'm sure old habits are hard to break but this made me chuckle a bit

Rich seems to slowly be settling down. He still goes off a lot but Hurley is starting to sound more comfortable in offering some direction in the conversations.

Rich should stay away from current events and politics though. I get he's trying everything to grab listeners but knowing Rich's history, he's not the first person I think of when looking for more serious discussions.

I thought the Wylder interview was good. Rich had mostly good questions, a few, ok dude, calm down, but you expect that when you interview someone you'd been a fan of.

He does need to steer clear of the reused bits for a while. Farts and 911 need another personality to make the dynamic work. Rich seems to be trying to pull off Fred-like comments but they sound extremely forced and faked.

Terrible ratings in key demo for Rich. Down to a 2.4.

Ouch. I’m out of market, has there been much promotion since the show launched? It’s hard to build an audience in the best of circumstances. It’s reallly hard to do so when the show is a new format at a station that doesn’t share that format. New sports talk show on a rock station is a tough putt, to say the least v

You have to hand it to Greg Hill. I've never listened to him myself, but he's been doing pretty good, despite listenership for his station's other programs having totally collapsed.

I listen to ZLX at other times of the day, and they constantly promote it. There are always ads for it during commercial breaks and the DJs promote it and talk about concert tickets giveaways that Rich will be having.

Gotcha. What about off the station itself? Billboards, ads on TV, online, etc?

I recall a bunch of promo across various media right around the time the show started, not much since. Most of it was closer to the city, I haven't seen anything on my commute from the North Shore to MetroWest.

It's still a distant second choice for me, sometimes third. Both Giardi and Hurley especially are way more likable than I expected them to be, Teddy J stinks as usual, but at least he's not on every day.

The problem is Rich. He's just kind of a spaz, and the show doesn't have any real flow to it because of that. It's ADHD radio.

How is WEEI even in business with those ratings? I’m assuming they don’t pay anyone anything outside of HIllman

Agreed. Those Jones and Mego numbers are UGLY. I would be quite all right if this means Jones is never heard from again on the local air waives once they finally cut bait on him.

I can't get past the fakeness. I always knew there was a certain degree because of being on the radio but after hearing how the other show members respond to him, Adelpho's reaction especially was eye-opening.

This is what kind of stood out to me after the split. Everyone who stayed on T&H didn't really have anything nice to say about Rich when he left. As outsiders we all assumed Fred was a prick and everyone hated him off the show, and Rich was the glue that held it together and everyone loved him. I think we all realize now that wasn't the case (although Fred is still a prick but it appears everyone from management on down preferred him to Rich)
