The Yankees are under .500 in their last 80 games, they’ll be lucky to even get to HOU. If they do, HOU absolutely owns them, Verlander and McCullers specifically. An AL East title and an ALCS berth is NY’s ceiling this season IMO.
Dayton Moore is out. This seems like a mild surprise.

Toronto is 14-5 in September. They are capable of beating Houston in a five game series (if that ends up being the DS matchup).
Anything's possible, but keep in mind that HOU's rotation will be perfectly lined up and TOR will presumably use Gausman and Manoah in games 1 and 2 of the first series and so neither will be available on full rest for game 1 of the ALDS.
The teams that win in the first round will need to use either their #3 SP (if they win 2-0) or their #4 SP (if they win 2-1) and those will also be their game 5 ALDS starters, unless they go with someone on short rest which pretty much never works (yes, Josh Beckett 2003, I know).
Seattle's offense has completely disappeared. They've lost 5 of 6 and scored a single run in 4 of those games against two pretty mediocre pitching staffs. They need to right the ship quick, or it could get tense in the PNW.
I expected the Mariners to Mariner but they have a 4 game cushion and an easy schedule with 14 to go.
It's not like the Orioles have played that great either. They are 8-10 in September.
New record set last night as a Met hitter was hit by a pitch for the 106th time this season. Ever the micromanager, Buck Showalter knew the significance and asked for the ball like it was some rookie's first hit or something.

And Kirby got blown up in the 3rd after the offense finally scored some early runs.
He was lucky it was just a solo shot. He started the inning by hitting Josh Rojas in the foot, but then Rojas came off the bag stealing 2nd and LA won the crew chief challenge.
The Orioles have had a starting pitching run rivalling their glory days of the 90s, 2 of the 3 games against a sleeping Astros team.

Combined with Seattle's injuries to their best offensive players (have lost 6 of 8 to Angels, A's, Royals road trip so far!!), they have a puncher's chance at the playoffs again. 4 back (I'm including tiebreaker here, Seattle won 4 out of 6 head to head) with 12 games to go. Seattle does get an extremely easy homestand on paper to finish the year, but I get the feeling that won't matter.
The top of the AL WC race is interesting with Toronto and Tampa now tied at 84-67. Tampa has won the head to head tiebreaker on that.

I don't know who is spinning wheat into gold with those pitchers but if I were Chaim, I would be waving big checks in their direction. Look at how bad Austin Voth was before he got there midseason:

Yeah, Seattle really might blow this, which would be rough. They’re just falling apart at the absolute wrong time. And it would be doubly rough for Baltimore to be the team to step up since they weren’t supposed to be this good yet.
This would be an all timer, when you factor in that the Orioles have a fairly tough schedule too. Maybe the Orioles will get lucky and the Yankees will take a break.

Now it's the Mariners involved in a wild one. And it's only the 6th.
Mariners put an 8 spot up in the 5th and had an 11-2 lead in the 6th, when their pitching (including Castillo) just completely fell apart. 12-11 KC now. In the 6th. And KC is still batting.
I‘ve never seen so many mound visits in one inning in my life. Scott Servais was wearing out a path walking to the mound so much.
It was bad. A really, really bad inning. Ended up letting up 11 runs. Should have been out of it at 4, but Kelenic lost a ball in the sun and everything went to deeper turd from there.
Meanwhile, Mancini singled in the 10th to put Houston up by 1 on Baltimore, after Baltimore tied it in the 8th.
Then Hays hits a single that should have tied it in the bottom of the 10th.... but the ghost runner (McKenna) totally misread it and didn't even get to third.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Baltimore and Houston play in the division series if some miracle happened. This series has been wild.
I don't disagree, but I would much rather it come at the expense of Tampa or Toronto than Seattle.
If the O's had swept the Astros it would be real panic time in Seattle. Seattle is still OK, although this further hurts a run at home field advantage in WC round.

Mariners blew a 9 run lead and meekly went down in the 9th to KC. The last batter didn't even run out a swinging strike 3 that got away from the catcher. A sad performance as they limp into the playoffs thanks to the Astros beating the O's.
The Os have 10 games left and they are 5 games back basically. They lose the tiebreaker to Tampa too. Not impossible but getting to the point where it seems pretty unlikely they could catch either.
Looked at the NL Wild Card, and the Brewers aren't dead yet. They do lose the tiebreaker to both SD and Philly which could prove costly. But Philly is on the road for the remainder of the season and SD has to play LAD. The Brewers do have to play the Cardinals for a two game set and if they won both they would be 4 back in the loss column and own the tiebreaker. So St Louis has to take it seriously.
