I actually don't think he was making any sort underhanded commentary about Marchand. I think he's just using it to deflect the spotlight off his team so they don't have to deal with "are they going to do to you what you did to them last year" questions. He's putting the attention on him and the Bruins not his team.
I will say that on at least two of the broadcasted games they had a graphic up underneath him saying "most games coached without winning a Stanley Cup" which I thoroughly enjoyed.
I think even bringing up Marchand's availability is an underhanded commentary...Maurice knows what he's doing. Although I largely agree with your overall point.

Last night, I was just picturing the reaction of someone like Milbury or O'Reilly watching when they go to interview this asshole during the game and he's dropping words like 'precursor' into the conversation. That made me smile, as did the note that he's yet to win the Cup.
I thought he was more mocking the media like you idiots are going to stalk Marchand like he’s Taylor Swift to see if he’s playing. I didn’t take it as a shot at Marchand.

The idea that Maroon adds more than Lauko is just absurd, especially in an elimination game. If we're looking at the upside of taking some 5 minute majors, it is already over.
I think their expected contributions are about even, all things considered. Maroon is slower than frozen mud but he's so strong in corners and other places. Plus, we're talking about what, 8-10 minutes of ice time?
Clearly the Bruins don't see it my way so I should probably let it go.
But to my eyes, this limited time on the ice is part of the problem.
Maroon and JVR are so slow that I think the Bruins will end up really forced into picking their spots with this line, unable to lean on them for more than a few 45 second shifts per period. Lauko at least has some speed.
And given that one of the clear problems in this series has been the inability of the Bruins to "close out" the last 40 minutes, I think it would be nice to have a fourth line that could get up in the 12-13 minute zone. In a close game, going into the last five minutes with a little more gas in the tank for the top two lines could matter.
Funny you say that because at one point in game 5 he had the puck wedged against the boards and it pretty much wasn't going anywhere until he wanted it to. It was such an exercise in futility for the Panthers trying to free it up.
Didn’t see it posted anywhere but Marchand spoke today. Love the honesty here but he’ll probably get called for like three penalties tomorrow just for saying it.
Everyone is apparently aghast that guys go out and try knock guys out of playoffs... like... sure... the reason why the intensity of the hits, finishing every check, etc is all because of kumbaya...
