I already suffered through a feature on Hicks and how he is allegedly going to have a huge rebound season because he changed his stance, or something.

Anyway, baseball is officially back when sports writers are telling us that our favorite heroes are in the best shape of their lives. Can't wait!

Three (three) Yankee games on TV this weekend, today’s 1 PM start is on MLBN at 8, then Sunday’s split squad games are both on at different times, one on YES and one on MLBN.

Split squad lineups and other players available, Brito vs what looks like close to TOR's A lineup is interesting, Brito is currently #7 or #8 on NY's SP depth chart (German-5, Schmidt-6, possibly Ryan Weber at 7), so that is a good chance for him to test himself, obv still very early in spring training.

I didn't realize he is so fast. Saw a crazy stat that he is the first minor leaguer with 20 homers and 50 steals since Andruw Jones in 1995.

Just put these young guys on the opening day roster. I don't even care if it is bad for their development, I just want to watch them.
Volpe 2B
Judge RF
Rizzo 1B
Stanton DH
Dominguez LF
LeMahieu 3B
Bader CF
Trevino C
Peraza SS

Gleyber traded, Hicks and Donaldson traded/released, bench of Cabrera, Florial, Higgy and IKF. Pereira, Sweeney, Spencer Jones, pushing to be the next wave after that.

85 SBs and just 12 CS combined for Peraza/Volpe last year.

That team would be so good defensively too, multiple upgrades to a starting 8 that was already far and away #1 by team DRS last year:

Bader barely played in the regular season for NY last year, he is a wizard and NY was -5 in CF last year. Peraza over IKF, Dominguez probably better than Hicks jn LF after he gets some experience there, and also Bader in CF lets Judge go back more to playing RF. Cabrera for a whole season as a utility guy is an upgrade too, he had incredible numbers in RF especially but is solid all over.

Dominguez off the bench tonight 1-1 with a walk and a SB and two runs scored. He had 37 steals last year too, so he and Volpe and Peraza were at an impressive 122 combined.

Volpe homers leading off the game. They used to call rookies like this “phe-noms.”

5-0 with two outs in 8th. Pirates have no hits off 8 Yankee pitchers, all going one inning.

He’s ready, more or less, but the question is what to do with the guys already on the team. If they trade Gleyber, then you know they’re planning to be aggressive with Volpe.

If Volpe stays hot, does Gleyber’s trade value diminish?

It's all a bit confusing, I did not expect them to still have this many infielders on March 2.

Rizzo (1B)
DJ (2B/3B/1B)
Gleyber (2B)
Peraza (SS)
Volpe (2B/SS)
Cabrera (everywhere)
Donaldson (3B)
IKF (SS/3B)

I think only 6 of those 8 can make the team, Boone said again a few days ago he sees Cabrera as an infielder more than an outfielder.

I wish the answer was that they would just jettison the two worst players of that group, Donaldson and IKF, but I fear those guys are locked in on the roster.

Chaparro's bat is legit, I was sure he was going to be taken in the rule 5 draft, but I think the reason he wasn't is that his future position is unclear, a la Austin Wells. 1B/DH probably, and those guys almost never get prospect hype (Chaparro was not in NY's just released top 30 on mlb.com for instance).

Well, that's probably because he isn't a "toolsy" type and doesn't seem to be a good defender.

But he seems like the kind of guy though that could come out of nowhere and have a few productive years, a Luke Voit type.

19 HRs in 239 ABs in AAA last year, it’s nice that no one took him in the rule 5 and NY gets another year to try to develop him.

Even more relevantly, Jack Curry is doing color on the game today and said he doesn't see IKF starting for NY at SS this year, so that is very happy news.

Not sure how much I'd take out of the nine HR game today (5 for NY and 4 for TB), either for hitters or pitchers, the wind was blowing out hard. They interviewed Oswaldo Cabrera in the OF during an early inning and it sounded like he was in the middle of a tornado. Trey Sweeney's 9th inning HR to CF went 418 feet with an exit velocity of just 100.8, have to think that is 20 feet shorter on a more normal day.
