If this was intended as performance art, it’s in the wrong place.

If not, maybe sit this one out.
Maybe I was too subtle.

Let’s move on, folks.

CTE seems like a pretty unlikely explanation compared to depression in general (unrelated to head trauma), which is many orders of magnitude more common. It's always shocking to find out about professional athletes suffering from depression, our natural inclination is to assume what a great time they are having, but I feel sorry for whatever it was that drove him all the way to this. Poor guy.

I think this is correct.

Most of us know little to nothing about Jeremy Giambi’s life in the 16 years between his final minor-league appearance and his untimely death. Whatever the universe of relevant facts is, most of them are unavailable to us. So we’re speculating based on the small number of facts we have, implicitly assuming that those facts are important pieces of the puzzle. I don’t think that assumption is warranted.

It probably makes more sense to start with the assumption that this tragedy is like others of its kind, then make adjustments as actual, relevant facts become known (if that happens). The means of death is certainly a relevant fact, and might suggest he wanted his brain to be studied, but I don’t know that that makes CTE more likely than any other disease of the brain.

Nearly 10 years ago, my youngest brother shot himself in the heart with a rifle we used to hunt deer with in happier times. He did it away from home so his wife would not find him first. I hate to see anyone’s suicide debated on a public forum. Just my take.

I hate anything to do with suicide. I have a reflex where I empathize with situations and any time someone mentions suicide, especially with details as to the method, I have a hard time not picturing that moment over and over again from my own perspective.

We will never know what was going through his mind when he pulled the trigger, no matter how much we speculate. I can only tell you just reflexively empathizing that whatever it is must have been powerful. I wasn't a fan of Giambi in life, but it's hard not to feel for anyone in that much pain.

Depression sucks.

I agree with you.

Unless he left a note, and the family decides to release or discuss that note publicly, we're never going to know why he did it. Nor do we need to know. Speculating/debating about the hows and whys feels icky.

I cannot fathom your pain, my sincere condolences. Completely agree with you.

I think this is correct.

NONE of us know ANYTHING about Jeremy Giambi’s life OR death. Whatever the universe of relevant facts is, THEY are unavailable to us. So we’re speculating based on MADE UP SHIT.

It probably makes more sense to start with the assumption that this tragedy is like others of its kind AND EVERYTHING ELSE WRITTEN ABOUT IT HERE AS IF ANY OF US DO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT JEREMY GIAMBI IS BULLSHIT.
Fixed that for you. I hate these threads where everyone is an expert on shit like this. None of us knew him. Speculating on why he died by suicide is just gross and frankly, inappropriate.. ALL of it is performance art. We should be better than this.
