What they’re saying is that signing Bogaerts is simply doing what the FO is supposed to do and that they still have a long ways to go.

Yes.. I disagree strongly with that statement... its 100% not true and its nothing more than Hot takez to fill air time... especially since the offseason is not even half over
it means jack **** that the rest of the division is still better than them. because they only look better than them on PAPER... thats why the games are played on the field... (or Ice/Court/ etc)
Go look up the "predictions" for the 2013 season and come back and tell me how many had the sox winning the WS (let alone make the playoffs)

I think this is completely wrong. Everyone following the lead up to the draft thought it was likely the Sox would lose one to two players. (No one that I’m aware of saw the Song pick, however.) The Sox Prospects guys made this exact prediction. I mean, Ward was the first first player selected! If you think that everyone except the Sox understood that these players were likely to have been selected then you have a very, very low opinion of the front office indeed.
2013 is an extreme outlier and you know it.
You’re blind if you don’t see that they are still behind the rest of the division. The Yankees are miles better, Blue Jays and Rays are better, and the Orioles are a high upside team with oodles of young, ML ready talent.
The Yoshida and Jansen deals theoretically help, no doubt. I’m glad they’re spending. However, the rotation is a huge question mark, they need a middle of the order power bat even if X is back, a RF if they don’t feel like Yoshida can play, catcher needs an upgrade. I’ve been saying all offseason that I will give Bloom this offseason to prove that he can make the necessary upgrades to be a playoff team. I hope today is the start of it, but to not acknowledge how far they have to go is just putting your head in the sand.
I see we won't agree on this given you are moving the goal posts.. so lets just agree to disagree...
I stand my my opinion that who is the "better" team in the offseason means jack crap, (and that goes for any sport not just MLB)

There are no goal posts being moved. My opinion is that they have the least talented roster in the division and laid out my reasons why. Predictions can be wrong, but the vast majority of the time the more talented teams have the better records. Not exactly a hot take.
Yoshida another left handed bat that makes me think they need a Right handed dh? I wonder if they can get J D Martinez to come back at a discount?
JD last year hit 16 homers and had a slash line of .274/.341/.448/.790, for an ops+ of 117. Not nearly the power guy he used to be, but that's still a good overall MLB hitter. He had 43 doubles in there. Wouldn't be the absolute worst idea to bring him back for one year at modest money, if he'd be amenable to that. I'd prefer someone better, but it wouldn't be the worst idea.
They really need someone who crushes lefties, and can ideally play RF. Wil Myers could be a good fit, not great defensively but somewhat versatile.
My minor quibble with him is that he doesn't seem to be that good at baseball.

Could be; and I guess Dalbec could be an option as well as a guy who can play against lefties and backup 1b and 3b (and is a much better fit for the roster than Hosmer, IMO).
I don't have a problem with the approach necessarily, but it feels...weird...not having a true DH coming off of so many years of Ortiz and JDM anchoring the lineup.
Especially because they lack a true power bat outside of Devers. Doesn't necessarily need to be a full-time DH but I'll feel a lot better if they sign someone.
I actually think it might make some sense, given the following assumptions.
1) If I'm doing the math right, we are something like $45m under the first threshold without Bogaerts.
2) We want another SP.
3) We were over the threshold last year, and don’t want to be over 3x in a row — but could.
4) We have a number of young position players on the 40-man roster with real question marks but a pile of offensive upside: Enmanuel Valdez, Jarren Duran, Bobby Dalbec, maybe Hoy Park or Wilyer Abreu. Hell, toss in Refsnyder and Arroyo, too.
5) DH would likely be the easiest place to add at the deadline.
So one option that actually seems pretty good would be aim to sign Bogaerts (for ~2/3 of our remaining amount under the threshold), then see if you can fit a Wacha/Eovaldi/trade target in what space remains, and then you go into camp with an open job at DH. This gives you a couple hundred PA to audition guys, and maybe somebody breaks out.
Would it really be all that shocking if Valdez (minor league OPS of .996 against RHP last season) and Dalbec (career .855 OPS against LHP) could be a reasonably-effective, very-cheap DH platoon, while also providing depth at a range of defensive positions? Maybe Duran finally settles on a swing that works for him and taps into the considerable offensive potential he showed in the minors as a power/speed guy.
Then you can reassess midseason. Maybe the rest of the roster is firing on all cylinders — Sale and Paxton are healthy and effective; Bello and Whitlock are seizing their rotation opportunities; Masa Yoshida is hitting the American League like it's the Pacific League; Casas is at .250/.350/.500 with a dozen HR — and we're in the thick of contention in a killer AL East. Then, if none of the spare parts have made themselves indispensible, we could add a rental power bat from a team that's out of contention midseason — Ian Happ? somebody like that — and either make the money work or decide we're going over to make a playoff run and we'll figure out a way to get back under in the offseason.
He wasn't hinting at anything. He said specifically:
(1) the pitch clock is coming into the game next season and Jansen is one of the slowest-paced pitchers in MLB; and
(2) the bigger bases are meant to encourage steals and Jansen is one of the worst pitchers in MLB at holding guys on.

I wouldn't mind a Valdez/Dalbec platoon DH. I don't think you can find another lefty masher all that easily, and Refsnyder and Dalbec both project to be better than most of the interesting ones. The one exception is Rhys Hoskins, who seems like an excellent fit for this team right now, but maybe there are concerns about how he'd feel being taken off full-time 1B duties a year before he hits free agency.
We want another SP and I think we'll get one. And it sure sounds like Rich Hill is also there for the taking. If we do, that leaves our trade chips on the 40-man, as I see them, as Houck, Pivetta, Verdugo, Rafaela, Duran, Dalbec, Arroyo and Hosmer (and to a lesser extent Winckowski, Seabold, Darwinzon Hernández and Downs). I think we could get someone interesting with some combination of those guys, whether it's Kepler or Hoskins or both.
Sounds like Cora is the closer. I'm surprised, though, that given the early reports, it's going to take another day

Does Yoshida have any kind of pull with Senga? Is it possible that Boston is a more attractive destination with Yoshida here?
I mean yeah it’s probably just posturing but I won’t be able to relax until the contract is signed. The longer it goes on the more possible someone else steps in and takes him away from us

With the addition of Yoshida some are taking about trading Verdugo. I say keep him and see what it takes to bring Kepler in. An OF of Yoshida, Hernandez, Verdugo and Kepler with RFsnyder on the bench looks a lot better than what they started last season with. Yoshida and Verdugo cover left, Hernandez and Kepler cover center, Kepler and Verdugo cover right and RFsnyder can cover all three OF positions. There is more than enough in that rotation to cover DH.
Following the Yoshida signing, I wondered if this would also help with a potential Senga addition. Players often struggle in their initial season following a move to a new city, never mind an entirely different country; thus, I imagine that having a teammate from the same country/culture (experiencing the same transition) would be helpful. Plus, from all acounts, Senga is ... talented. I'd love to see him or Eovaldi signed. From there, add an additional bargain bat or two, pull a trade for another starter, and we're in business! Baseball's a weird game. With a handful of top hitters, a decent supporting cast, healthy-ish rotation, and key deadline deal or two, anything is possible.
On a side note? Maybe it's because I was born in '81 and by the time I turned 21 I was convinced the Red Sox would never win a World Series (Wait, we've won f-cking four during my lifetime?), but I'm completely perplexed by the Bloom impatience. I'm sold on his vision and am all for the necessary short-term steps to turn the Sox into a Dodgers/Padres/Astros kind of monster. Creating an organization with a loaded farm system and Top-5 spending power is by far the best way to compete for champions on a year-to-year basis.
Anything is possible.

I think that the Xander situation in similar to what we saw with Judge. Bogaerts wants to stay in Boston -- if it's within reasonable range of his best offer(s), he'll be back. My guess? The re-signing is announced by noontime tomorrow.
