Same reason they traded Victorino for nothing. To clear up a roster spot and move in other guys who could be useful in the future. The Sox now have more playing time for JBJ and Castillo with Victorino gone. With Napoli gone you have options potentially with Shaw, Panda, Hanley dtc

 
They didn't trade Victorino for nothing.  They got a serviceable utility infielder who has options and is under control for five more years.  In other words something they needed now with Pedroia on the DL and can use in the future.  If they could get something equivalent for Napoli, they'd have done it already.
 
Shaw isn't Castillo or JBJ.  The latter two potentially have a future as regular major league starters.  Shaw really does not.  Panda and Hanley have plenty of playing opportunities already.

I know, Lyons is Lyons, but I think he nailed it in this case, and I was almost shocked to hear someone from the local media tell it like it is. 

He may not always be right, but it is great to have a NESN guy willing to make some pointed comments.
