Is there even any room on this invincible juggernaut of a team for Devers, O'Neill, Story, Grissom, Casas, et al?

In all seriousness, it really is true that if you have good pitching and defense, even a minor league lineup can win major league games.

Good game down a few players. Game ball to Bobby for that unexpected walk

Missed this part of the game; was there any explanation given why McGuire was the pinch-hitter instead of Yoshida?

McGuire's swung a pretty good bat and I'm guessing Cora may have wanted to hold onto Yoshida in case an outfielder went down. Pickin's for defensive replacement are getting pretty slim. That said, it does run contrary to the idea of not using your back up catcher for the same reason.

Imagine them, wanting to try to win instead of forfeiting.
I’m in Paris so I’m replying to your snark at a weird time! Way to skip right over the “not to blame anyone.” It’s just crazy to me how fast the injuries piled up and what they’re forced to run out there. But cool, go with the least generous reading of what I said :fonz:

Ah - you probably haven't seen a team field an injury-backup lineup before. Now I understand your surprise at what one looks like.

Hah, I meant I was visiting. Your tone is baffling either way, though I shouldn’t be surprised.
Have you watched the games so far this year? (Honest question - some people don't.) It's been rather like a slow train wreck over the last 2.5 weeks. Longer if you consider just Devers who missed the second game of the season.

So, even if you're only an every-other-game watcher, it's a little hard to take someone seriously who is acting like yesterday's lineup is an out-of-the-blue shock.

Fair enough, and I had a feeling that I was not clear enough / misinterpreting your tone etc. I don’t watch them all, but check all the box scores etc. But yeah, a shock is too strong. It’s more the vibe of disbelieving that things got so bad injury-wise over the last few weeks. Even having seen these things start to pile up I can’t help but feel surprised, I guess!

That makes sense to me.

With any luck, we're at the high-water mark for injuries, and will soon be getting people back. (Knock wood.)

Enjoy Paris!

I'm going home
While this weekend was rightfully mostly focused on Booser, it had to feel pretty damn good for my man Chase.

In 13 innings this season, he's allowed 4 runs and is sporting a 2.77 ERA, brought down from 4.0 with two 2 scoreless inning performances against the team that couldn't find a place for him this spring. Booyah!

Cora has used him virtually perfectly, and it's been and will probably continue to be a very important role for this team. His stuff has looked better than I expected, too, and I thought he'd be decent....

I love that B&B always have their eyes open for guys they think will fit with their program. I think someone mentioned in the Anderson thread that it was similar to when Slaten became available. they didn't wait, they just went and got the player. And for the record, I'm not comparing the talent levels of the two players, just acknowledging that there is value in both, and B&B identified it, and brought them in to fill their respective roles.

McGuire was still DH, so was still available to catch if Wong got winged.

Just to add to this if I may. The use and Andersen's response thus far has really benefited the staff. This is the second time now that Anderson has come in and tossed multiple innings to finish out the game on the day before an off day. It's huge when you can gift the majority of the pen with at least 2 days off.
