I'm learning a few things about staying patient watching this guy talk. If it were me I'd probably want to either beat one of these reporters or crawl under the table in the fetal position.

I think Surma is handling himself pretty well, but these questioners are awful.
Totally agree - this looks ten times harder than being White House Press Secretary, primarily b/c 3/4 of the press sound like they are hardcore Paterno loyalists, not legit journalists.

These "reporters" are being massive dickbags. I hope what someone said upthread, that a lot of these folks are from fan sites, etc., is true. Surma's showing some exceptional patience here.

These questions are laughable. Do these kids realize they sound like fools? Paterno has more of a cult of personality than I ever thought. One kid basically guaranteed the students would riot as a result of the firing.

The tone of many people in this room is embarrassing. One camera man "Your campus is going to burn tonight."

It's good to see that at the top of the food chain, the adults are in charge. Though there really shouldn't have been any question at this point.

Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. The sums of money involved in some college athletics give rise to individuals having great power and control over fiefdoms.

Wow.

Unbelievable poise by the Trustee at the mic in the face of some absolutely shameful questions. The last question made me nearly blackout with rage. Christ.

It sounded like there was one main idiot in the room, the one who asked the last question ("You guys had it in for Coach the whole time!" or something like that). Am I wrong about that?

I've been staying out of this . . . . Am glad that Paterno is out; the whole thing reeks of evil. But one tihng that people haven't mentioned.

We've discussed how after the 1998 incident, Sandusky was told that he wasn't going to be successor to Paterno. And we've all speculated why.

But even more damning (at least to me) is that shortly after that, Sandusky was interviewed 3 times for the VA job and was the front-runner at one point. But VA quickly moved on to Al Groh. Why is that? Did Penn State tell Terry Holland something?

And despite everything that was going on, PSU/Joe Pa not only let this guy run a non-profit for troubled children, but helped with his exposure.

And I know none of us know who knew what and when, but if it turns out that PSU/Joe Pa knew enough to tell Terry Holland not to hire this guy but still let him run Second MIle, well, I guess that's what we all call the "banality of evil."

The righteous indignation in the voice of these people asking questions. Penn State is a sickening cult and these people are making me sick.
I liked the "Penn State will never get another dime from me!" in the thread SoxScout posted. It was all "WE ARE", support the football team, wear a blue t-shirt after the child rape allegations, but JoePa gets deservedly canned after rejecting his opportunity to resign with some dignity, and it's rage and tears.

The BOT is the only Penn State affiliated entity that has shown any responsibility and grace under pressure since this whole thing exploded. These angry students are too dumb to realize it.

John Surma, evidently, is the CEO of US Steel, and I bet he's never endured a meeting as intense as that one.

Spanier statement.

It has been my great privilege and honor to serve Penn State for more than 25 years, including the past 16 as president. I have said before that the position I occupy is the dream job in American higher education, and I am proud of what we have all done together to advance our programs, support our students, and enhance pride in our institution.
Our great university has been rocked by serious charges against a former coach. The presentment by the Attorney General describes acts that should never be tolerated or ignored. I was stunned and outraged to learn that any predatory act might have occurred in a University facility or by someone associated with the University.

I am heartbroken to think that any child may have been hurt and have deep convictions about the need to protect children and youth. My heartfelt sympathies go out to all those who may have been victimized. I would never hesitate to report a crime if I had any suspicion that one had been committed.

The acts of no one person should define this university. Penn State is defined by the traditions, loyalty and integrity of hundreds of thousands of students, alumni and employees.

Penn State and its Board of Trustees are in the throes of dealing with and recovering from this crisis, and there is wisdom in a transition in leadership so that there are no distractions in allowing the University to move forward.

This University is a large and complex institution, and although I have always acted honorably and in the best interests of the University, the buck stops here. In this situation, I believe it is in the best interests of the University to give my successor a clear path for resolving the issues before us.

I will always value the wonderful relationships that I have developed with the many thousands of Penn Staters, community leaders and members of the higher education community throughout the country. I will continue to serve the University in every way possible and celebrate the greatness of Penn State.

Joe Paterno's wikipedia page has already been changed. He's now listed as a "former" college football coach. Unreal. #PennState #JoPa

You HAVE to be kidding me?? Officially have read my last thing from Peter King.
It depends how you read that quote, and I don't know the context at all - you can definitely read it as you did, but I'd prefer to read it as "what a remarkable turn of events - this is a person who really was (until a week ago) one of the most revered figures in college football, and now he doesn't even deserve a face to face meeting to dump him"

Question: "You realize students are rioting at this moment right?"
John: "Obviously not, since I'm in here."

I think the student was hoping for: "Oh really? Shit. Don't want that. Can we do a take-bake?"

Who'd have thought, a week ago, that Paterno would ever be fired by Penn State, and that my respect for Matt Millen would ever greatly increase as it has.

The "official" word was that Holland questioned how committed Sandusky was to coaching due to the amount of time he spent with Second Mile. When questioned, Sandusky responded with something like, "I'm not going to change who i am." (No Jerry, you sure aren't)

I'm sure if Holland completed his due diligence he would have found out which is probably why Sandusky never interviewed for another job figuring his secret would eventually get out. He was save at Happy Valley......or so he thought.

First good decision made by the board thus far. Only problem is that it should have been done at 9AM on Monday.

Seems a proverbial line in the sand has been drawn between the JoePa/PSU football/fanboys and the academic institution. This will get ugly.

True, but knowing King, I doubt that is the case. I think he would have worded it different if that is what he was trying to get across.

If I were the parent of a PSU student, and learned that my child was invovled in any rioting this evening, he/she would be removed from the student rolls in the morning.
