Patriots sign DE/OLB Jabaal Sheard

I would hate it if the Pats signed Hardy.  I'm under no illusion that the Pats, like every other team, probably have at least a handful of guys on the roster who are not exactly upstanding citizens.  But Hardy should be in jail, and I'd rather not have to root for a team that would choose to employ him.

Morality and regard for Myra aside, there is the brand. On the field, there are the facts that he's likely facing a suspension of some length, the financial commitment that would be required, and the availability in the draft of guys who can bring pass pressure, albeit not players of Hardy's demonstrated worth.

I don't get the notion where the Panthers have to cut Hardy for PR reasons, but another team can give him a second chance?  Is he less likely to re-offend in a different uniform?

Jones had at least five wiped out. He had two alone in the opener against Miami, and I know he had more. I think he had one wiped out against the Raiders as well? Maybe it was KC? I'm almost positive he had at least 1-2 more beyond that. Minnesota maybe had one as well? A bunch came in the beginning of the year.
Jones committed two roughing-the-passer penalties Week 1. Maybe that's what you're thinking of?

Pats committed ten penalties that game: the two roughings on Jones, another roughing on Hightower, a neutral zone infraction, five on offense (one declined), and one on special teams. So I don't even see the kind of penalties that could wipe out a sack here.

Yeah. They both negated his sacks. His fault, I suppose, but still plays he got through to the QB.

I'm not super high on Jones either, fwiw, and I hope he isn't given an extension if he's going to command what I think he will. I'd rather use the money on Collins and Hightower. Jones is a good player, but too inconsistent and injury prone.

Both plays were good rushes and pressures, but neither were sacks. I just watched them.
Didn't he go straight up the middle on one and complete the sack? I must be getting old.

Like I said, I must be getting old. I defer to your watching them obviously. Thanks for getting it right.

Allegations are no more than allegations, but:

"On May 13, 2014 Greg Hardy attacked me in his apartment. Hardy picked me up and threw me in the tile tub area of his bathroom. I have bruises from head to toe, including head, neck, back, shoulders, arms, legs elbow and feet. Hardy pulled me from the tub by my hair, screaming at me that he was going to kill me, break my arms and other threats that I completely believe. He drug me across the bathroom and out into the bedroom. Hardy choked me with both hands around my throat while I was lying on the floor. Hardy picked me up over his head and threw me onto a couch covered in assault rifles and/or shotguns. I landed on those weapons. Hardy bragged that all the assault rifles were loaded. Landing on those weapons bruised my neck and my back. Hardy screamed for his 'administrative assistant' (Sammy Curtis) to come into the room and hold me down. Curtis came into the room, grabbed me from behind and held me down. Hardy and Curtis then took me into the living room area. I wasn't nearly strong or fast enough to escape. I begged them to let me go & I wouldn't tell anyone what he did. They took me out into the hall, pushed me down & went back inside the apartment. I crawled to the elevator and ran into [Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department]."

Additionally in the motion, Holder alleges Hardy "has approximately 25-30 firearms. AK-47's, automatic looking weapons, shotguns, rifles and pistols. Some are permitted and some are not. Hardy has a very large gun safe at his residence in South Charlotte."

She also alleges "as part of the assault, [Hardy] threatened to shoot me if I went to the media or reported his assaults to anyone."

Plus, we're in the middle of the AH trial.

There's two sides to every story.

He beats women, but he also gets sacks. Soooo....

I have little doubt he is a scumbag.  I dont like guys who beat women.  And fair or not I tend to side with the women.

That said its testimony and reporting like this that annoys me.

Sooo....25-30 is too much?

So she is a gun expert?  She is familiar enough with his collection to determine if they are "permitted or not".  She "sees AK-47s".  Quite likely these are perfectly legal Semi Automatic (as opposed to (probably illegal....unless he has the proper documentation....which would then make them legal) Fully automatic weapons.  "Automatic looking weapons" are not illegal.  While they may scare or intimidate those unfamiliar with them, its perfectly legal to own them.  Shotguns, Rifles and Pistols......Ok...whats the problem....thats how weapons are classified.  Its a throwaway line to sound more intimidating. Is said to elicit a "wow he has all 3!"    Would it be better if he had 25-30 firearms....all pistols....? How do they know "some are permitted and some are not."  Unless someone actually heard him say "Yea this is a Fully Auto Vityaz-SN that I got from a guy who smuggled it in from Kazakhstan....I shouldnt even have this.....screw the ATF!"(....which should be enough to cause ATF charges)  then where does this "Some are and some aren't" expertise come from?

Sure, I was just responding to Baka's strawman that anyone was condemning him for owning guns.  The gun info was clearly presented as context to the assault in which they were used as a threat (allegedly).  If true, it's relevant to know what exactly the threat involved.

Sorry to hijack the thread and move it back to discussion about the actual player listed but there was a nice write-up on NESN today about Jabaal and why he chose the pats.

“Just the whole feel of winning,” Sheard told Patriots.com’s Jackie Brittain on Thursday. “As soon as I came here, I met with the coaches and the team. Being around the organization is that whole culture, feeling of winning.”

Bleacher report on why Jabaal could be the next great revival in a Pats Uniform

The defining difference between this possible unearthed gem and other Belichick junk bin projects is that Sheard wasn’t found among old, decaying wreckage. He’s not winding down the twilight of his career, and he’s not approaching his football expiry date.  No, instead he’s young, cheap and useful in different roles.

And last but not least, Draft information for those looking for historical information on a player that the Pats apparently highly regarded.

Sheard saw his snap percentage drop from around 70% through Week 11 to 38% in the final six games following a foot injury against Houston - which, as noted, may have been a broken foot. He finished with just 8 tackles and six QB hits/hurries over that period compared to 36 tackles and 22 hits/hurries in his first 11 games. Those pre-injury numbers aren't groundbreaking but lend credence to the report that he was impaired by the injury.

Do you know anyone who keeps their long guns on the couch?
