How does this work? I assume he originally cleared waivers, how does he get claimed now? Or did they claim him off their practice squad?

Believe he has to go on the 53 and today is when they can start moving players to IR.

NFL.com write up of Corral:

Overview

Small quarterback with a big heart who has learned to play with better maturity and control without losing his edge. Corral played in a quarterback-friendly scheme with well-defined reads, so he needs to prove he can work through full-field progressions and make good decisions with the ball. He's decisive, operating with a quick-trigger release to challenge tight windows and possesses the touch to make challenging bucket throws. He's a fiercely competitive runner but needs to get his slide game up as he's not built to take the pounding from called runs or scrambles. Corral is mobile, but his poise and accuracy wane when forced to move. Discipline has benefitted Corral and he's clearly at his best when operating on-schedule and in rhythm. A spread-based scheme and a player-friendly head coach gives Corral the best opportunity to live up to his potential and challenge to become the best QB from this draft class.

Strengths
  • Competes hard and plays with an abundance of confidence.
  • Quicker processor and better decision-maker in 2021.
  • Hasty ball-handling for quick game and RPOs.
  • Impressive release quickness and rips a tight spiral.
  • Touch and fearlessness to work between leveled coverage.
  • Generally patient, allowing routes to develop.
  • Above-average arm strength for smaller quarterback.
  • Twitched-up hips to generate drive on window throws.
  • Made 60-yard throw without having his feet set against Alabama.
  • Throws fluffy, well-placed deep ball when protected.
  • Would rather take sack then put the ball up for grabs.
  • Would have had significantly higher completion rate if not for excessive drops.
  • Able to slip away from pressure.
  • Both elusive and combative on called runs and scrambles.

Weaknesses
  • Slender frame with size falling below desired NFL mark.
  • Too haphazard as a runner to sustain durability.
  • Scouts question whether he has necessary maturity.
  • Benefits from heavy play-action and RPO looks.
  • Needs to prove he can become a full-field reader.
  • Babies and aims the short throw.
  • Deep ball needs to come out earlier for speedy NFL targets.
  • Will take unnecessary chances against lingering safety help.
  • Most of his interceptions were layups for the defender.
  • Poise and placement take a hit once his feet are moving.
  • Takes too long to leave pocket and seek refuge under duress.

Right, he’s already on the 53, taking Thornton‘s spot. I just thought the waiver process ended yesterday but I guess not.

Anyway, highlights are always fun, looks like Arkansas played without a secondary:

Corral made Carolina's original 53, they claimed Throckmorton, which necessitated waiving Corral, so he went on waivers a day later than the cuts to make it to 53 league-wide

I believe Corral wasn't a Tuesday cut. He made Carolina's opening 53 man roster and was waived yesterday to open room for players they claimed and were awarded from cut down day.

Will be interesting if Mac gets injured in game with no experience at backup QB in the offense
first few weeks my guess would be they might have Zappe active as QB 2 off the PS.
Though Zappe really only has minimal experience in the offense. Corral's college offense might be closer to BOB's offense than anything Zappe ran before in terms of RPO usage.

The game will be lost anyway if so, and we will get to witness lots of this:

(12:20) R.Stevenson right end pushed ob at NE 27 for 2 yards.
1st & 10 at NE 25

(11:33) R.Stevenson up the middle to NE28 for 1 yards.
2nd & 8 at NE 27

(10:45) R.Stevenson up the middle to NE31 for 3 yards.
3rd & 7 at NE 28

(10:12) J.Bailey punts 43 yards to PHI 26, Center-J.Cardona, fair catch by J.Holland.
4th & 4 at NE 31

IIRC I thought Corral was one of those "might be a franchise QB in the right situation types", like, coincidentally, Mac Jones. Am I misremembering that?

This story claims he dropped in draft due to off-field issues: 2022 NFL Draft: Panthers QB Matt Corral fell to third round due to off-field issues, per report - CBSSports.com

"The Carolina Panthers, football-wise, thought Matt Corral had the best film, hands down. But this is about a lot more than that. There's a lot of work required here to make sure they are comfortable off the field with the person. He dealt with a multitude of issues including alcohol and related issues. He admitted publicly to battling depression. He has that unreliable behavior off the field and he really, really struggled in some interviews with teams. That said, the talent is enough to make the Carolina Panthers take a shot with Corral."
Corral is also just one of five college quarterbacks since 2000 to register a 3,300-plus passing yard campaign while throwing five or fewer interceptions and rushing for double-digit touchdowns.
This mock had him in first round: 2022 NFL Mock Draft: Seahawks grab Matt Corral after trade, Kenny Pickett to Saints - CBSSports.com

Just like the 1960's teams.

Nance to the left, Nance to the right, Nance up the middle; punt.

15 is low...also not great that he just got cut by a crappy team with a tiny QB that will almost certainly get dinged up this year. But at least his passes can stay airborne on a line for more than 20 yards! The Zappe bar is pretty low right now.
I'm not sure it's that bad. They have Andy Dalton backing up Young. They wouldn't be the first team to keep an establish vet as the backup to their high profile rookie QB. There are a lot of benefits - he can step in with no rookie issues if Young gets hurt, probably doesn't mind mentoring at this stage of his career, etc.

Is this another "BB galaxy brain" move that looks interesting on paper but its ultimately just franchise destroying arrogance that I need to get angry about? Asking for several thousand friends.

It depends. If he fumbles on a sack and just lies on the ground without going after the ball, then yes.

Well on paper I like the idea of them Wu Tanging their QB portfolio a bit. They have options if Jones gets hurt or cannot average more than minus five YPA.

Maybe Corral will be golden.

At least it’s not Brian Hoyer.

Exactly. Would much rather sign a young guy with potential than some retread. To C-D's point, his highlights show him running a lot of play action and RPO so he could be fun. He missed all of last season with a foot injury so he hasn't gotten much of an opportunity. Perfect buy low guy to see what you have.

He now has to be on the 53 man roster for the next 3 weeks at a minimum.
That rule is if you sign a player from another teams practice squad, not if you claim a player on waivers.

They could waive him again tomorrow if they wanted.

Driving somewhere most likely
Didn’t he beat up Gretzky‘s kid?
Yes, ended up transferring high schools after that.
He later stated he switched schools due to Oaks Christian being for "rich kids" that were "never going to have to work a day in their lives", as well as a physical altercation with a son of Wayne Gretzky that finalized his decision to transfer.

Corral looks like he’s got a decent arm, but my biggest takeaway from that highlight video? Tackling in college football, especially by DBs, is atrocious.
Also it seems that 85% of his throws were to Drummond, who usually didn’t have a defender within 5-7 yards.

Love this move. Or should I say, I OK the move to get Corral.

Saw him a bunch in the SEC, liked him a lot

Definitely better than Zappe.
