Is there a reason that picture has (what I think is) a hedgehog in it?  I mean, it's awesome, so I'm mostly curious.

This is Keith Olbermann at his best.  You might not like his politics.  He might be a blowhard asshole in real life.  But in these ranting monologues, he's pitch perfect more often than he isn't.

The good news is that Lewiston has the rodent problem relatively under control these days.

Isn't he a Yankee fan to boot?!!! Someone pass the smelling salts, I think I just heard Suzyn Waldman hit the floor.
Yes, he is. And he might have just performed the public service of killing Francesa

That was awesome.

This though is a pretty neat stat about Jeter:

Finally, there’s this astounding number. According to Elias, it’s the number of games Jeter has played, in his entire career, in which his team, the mighty Yankees, was mathematically eliminated from some sort of race for some sort of trip to the postseason. One meaningless game in 20 seasons? Whoa. On one hand, it would be nuts to argue that was all Derek Jeter’s doing. On the other hand, what defines his career better than that? A man who lived for the big game -- and played nothing but big games. For 20 years. What better way to put a frame around the career of one of the greatest shortstops who ever turned a 4-6-3?

What I love most about the Olbermann segment isn't even anything Olbermann said.  It's the press conference where Posada is asked where Jeter ranks among all time Yankee greats.

Posada hems and haws and then goes completely silent.  And you just know he's running through the various options about what he can say and what the consequences will be:

"Crap, what do I say here?  I have to be nice to Jeter, because this is all in his honor.  But it feels absurd to say he's the greatest Yankee ever, I mean there are so many great players we've had  .... but if I don't give him the proper respect - excuse me, I meant to say (think?) re2pect -  I'm going to hear it from the press and the fans .  So WTF should I say?"

Cut to him on the video looking like a man making a hostage tape:

"You know for me, he's number 1."

Well, if he doesn't take Olbermann's advice and retire after tomorrow's game, he's going to quintuple that number in the next four days.

KO's not a Yankees fan.  At least that's what he claims on the tweeters.
He is one in real life. Not to annoying levels, though. And he's not a fanboy at all. Plus, to be fair he should be a Yankee fan- he's from NY and he's deep into baseball history.
Can't wait to watch part 2.

He's on a tear.

In the recent past, he has gone too far, been too sanctimonious, made it all about himself. I'm on the same side of the aisle as KO politically, but I thought he was an embarrassment.

Lately, he's been 1000% better. His attacks are grounded in fact. His outrage comes right up to the line without going over. He's even kind of witty, which keeps the whole thing from getting too ponderous.

Granted, NFL/Goodell/Ravens/AP etc., and the mountain of suck that is the Jeter farewell tour, are target-rich environments. But his voice is the best one out there right now. He's tearing it up.

The cradle of the game.
Keith, "I love ya buddy, I fuckin' love ya."

And really, all this is barely scratching the surface of my ire. Exactly what has he done with 2 decades of adulation? Has he ever actually stood for anything? Has he ever used his stature to support anything the least bit controversial? "Healthy Lifestyles for Youth"? Really? I bet he's also for saving the fucking pandas. How about something with some teeth? Minorities. Hunger. Cancer. Tobacco use. Immigration. Oppression. No way. Too risky. Must protect the image. Well, fuck the image. It's a goddamned charade. How ironic that he knows absolutely nothing about fulfilling "hopes and dreams."

The bloom is off the rose. Best YED since '04.

SI responds to KO's Jeter rant

Olbermann insists that Jeter is not among the top-10 Yankees of all-time as measured by WAR per season with New York, which is a neat trick; the Yankees have had an inordinate number of all-time great players, so it is possible for Jeter to be an obvious Hall of Famer and still not one of the 10 best Yankees of all-time. They are like the Lakers in that way. We would all agree that Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant are among the best basketball players in history, right? Well, if those are your top five Lakers, where do you put Kareem Abdul-Jabbar?

The guy who meant the most to their success from 95 to present day retired last year.

Edit: and the one who was truly historically GREAT

SI's response doesn't make much sense. KO's point was that, by WAR, Jeter isn't the greatest Yankee ever. And SI's response is "They've had a lot of great players!!"

Which, essentially, is exactly KO's point.

KO misses one point. Jeter was named captain in 2003. 12 years, one title and one epic collapse. And the title they won was after a $450m land grab. His reign as "captain" has been poor

You would put Kareem 6th. Wtf kind of bs response is that? Is SI saying we should have like 20 players in the top ten?

Yes that's because he IS a blowhard.

Blowhards also have the capacity to be correct occasionally.

The "yeah Jeets" was the best part about it.  If only he could've worked in hopes and dreams.

I understand why Yankee fanboys (and they are legion) would be upset by this but anyone who truly follows the game understands that what Olbermann is saying is pretty spot on.   Plus, the whole retirement tour thing is just an exercise in merchandising.   And one huge missed marketing opportunity for Valtrex.

I don't know how I feel about Olberman's Jeter rant....and I like Olberman.

What is the point here?  As a Red Sox fan living in the NYC area, I have zero problem with Derek Jeter.  I have a great respect for the longevity of his career, the balls out way he played the game (that diving catch in 2004 is still amazing to watch) and the fact that there is no proof that he's an asshole...he's always been a bland dude, but to go 20 years with no shit on you is a pretty rare feat in this day.

Anyway, my point is....what is the point of the rant?  He shouldn't be celebrated?  the guys is a standup guy and is a first ballot HOF'er...who cares if he's a top 10 yankee?  Has Jeter ever pounded his chest and said he was?

I'm happy he is getting this type of sendoff as I was the fruit bat as well.

yup.  in the 12 years since he's been captain, the yankees have been responsible for 7.6% of all MLB salaries paid.  They've won 8.3% of the WS titles in that span, or basically exactly what you'd expect based on dollars spent.
