In a great wrestling showdown between No. 1 Penn State and No. 2 Ohio State on Saturday night, Nits rallied for 19-18 win. Sellout crowd, great atmosphere. Match turned when unranked Nit Anthony Vassar upset top-ranked Kyle Moore at 197. Olympic and World champion Kyle Snyder was held to a 15-10 decision at heavyweight. He needed to win by eight points to tie the dual-meet.

This is one sport where the Big Ten rules. Penn State has won six of the last seven national championships and the Buckeyes took the other.

On a rainy wonderful day in Newton, Arsenault from Apuzzo gave the BC Eagles a 12-11 heart-pounding overtime win over Stony Brook, and a back-to-back trip to the Final Four for the BC Women's Lacrosse team. Soar Eagles, soar.

BC faces Maryland, ironically, on the Stony Brook campus, for the National Semi-Finals, on Friday May 25th.

In the other semi, UNC faces JMU.

BC Lacrosse beats Maryland, 15-13, and goes to their 2nd consecutive National Championship Final. They will take on JMU at Noon, live on ESPNU.

And Iowa won the previous 3 before that. And Minnesota the year before Iowa. The last team to win the national championship that wasn't Oklahoma State or from the Big Ten was Arizona State in 1988.

The Big 10 and Big 12 (current teams) have dominated. The only teams to win from other conferences are Arizona State (Pac-12) in 1988 and Cornell College (normally Division III) in 1947. Only 12 different teams have ever won the title.

Yes, it is a sport marked by dynasties. And a lack of participation. Many D-I programs dropped the sport because their teams do not make money. I would guess that Penn State, Ohio State and Iowa more than break even. Gotta look that up!

Hopefully in the future these games can be put on a better channel than ESPNews/ESPN3. At least the Final is on the U

Men's semis are:
#3 UVA v. #2 Duke, Noon
#5 Sons of Craig Breslow v. #1 Sons of Chris Hogan, 2:30 or later
Both games on ESPN2, at the Linc in Phily

Penn State making it a game after being down 10-1 to Yale, now 14-10 at the start of 2nd half

Edit re: women’s coverage- really weak that they couldn’t show the live semis, especially given how much they’re covering softball. The women’s semis games are going to be replayed on U early Sunday before the final.

Got to read closer, my bad. Only saw the ESPN3 mentioned and I looked but my cable guide doesn’t say when ESPNews is pre-empted. I couldn’t find some of the QFs at all.

Anyway, I still contend national lax semis should be on the main channels and could be better balanced with preliminary regional softball coverage.

The ratings dictate those decisions (almost all the time). Softball does pretty well. Better than baseball, lacrosse, and some college basketball.

Burke Magnus is likely the reason the women's semis were moved to linear. I believe his daughter plays.

So this is what it feels like to be a Buffalo Bills fan, huh?


Disappointing end for the Senior class of Sam, Dempsey, Kenzie, Miller, LD, Taylor, Hannah, Brooke, and Christina. Hope they can reload for next year. Cara, Jen, and Sheila need to become the next big 3.

BC hosts the ACC Field Hockey tournament, QF's Thursday, Final Sunday. Even though regular season games, you can see the whole thing for $10, which a great deal. (Students with ID are free). BC is the 2 seed. UNC is #1 seed and gets the only bye. (7 teams)

Congrats to BC Field Hockey, as they beat #5 Louisville in Louisville in the NCAA Tournament in a shootout, to advance to their first ever Final Four. They will play #1 UNC in Winston-Salem this Friday.

Georgetown wins it's first national title in soccer in a penalty shootout after a 3-3 tie with Virginia. Highest scoring final since 1980, despite the teams being the two best defensive squads in the country.

Al Leiter's kid Jack made his collegiate debut as a starting pitcher for Vandy yesterday. He went 5 innings with 0 runs and 12 Ks. Leiter is the top ranked freshman player in the country and Vandy's rotation is so deep that he's a midweek starter.

I was at the ODU-Yale baseball game yesterday and I always like reading about the players. The Yale catcher, good lord.

Cal Christofori, from Belmont HS, in Belmont, Ma had the following HS career:

Baseball--4 year starter at catcher
Football--4 year starter at QB
Hockey--4 year starter at goalie

And, oh, for fun, as a senior he decided to play basketball and started.

And, of course, the academics to get into Yale.

OT, but he may not have needed to have the academics of a typical Yalie if he had all that at HS.

OT2, at some other schools, college baseball is a revenue sport. Maybe even at ODU.

How can you play HS hockey and basketball during the same year?

Edit: It seems like he was the hockey goalie in 8th grade. Weird to do that for 4 years then give it up?

1--I mean, maybe---but his profile says he was an AP Scholar and NHS member, so at the very least I doubt he was rocking the 2.5 GPA in HS.

2--I think baseball is pretty clearly a non-rev sport at like 99% of schools. Including ODU.

There's probably less than 10 teams that make money on baseball. LSU definitely does and I'm sure other SEC schools that draw good crowds do.

3rd best if you are lucky.

However, Binghamton just got a $60 million donation to build a baseball stadium and indoor practice area(complete with full turf infield, cages, coaches offices overlooking the field, etc.). For comparison's sake, that is just slightly less than what the renovations to Dudy Noble Field at MS State.

• You know most of those high school recruits who were going to get drafted and signed by the pros in a normal 40-round draft? Now they’re not. Now they’re thinking they’ll go to college after all.

• And most of those college juniors who were also about to get drafted and signed? Now they’re not, either. So they’ll be staying in school.

• And all those seniors who were going to graduate and move on with their lives? Now they just might come back and play another year.

• So think of the hundreds of kids who have been promised scholarships, opportunity and playing time – who now have to be told: “Oops. Sorry. Our juniors and seniors are coming back.”

Just came here to post about that, it is going to be a huge story. If a fairly large school like Cincinnati is cutting programs, I can't imagine what D2 and D3 schools are going to have to do, albeit they probably have less costs associated with it. Also will be fascinating to see how this impacts Title IX; I suspect men's programs will be the first to go for most schools.

FCS, non-football D1; D2 and D3 schools probably aren't as affected by this unless the specific university is in financial trouble. They are used to their sports programs operating at a loss.

You are right that men's programs will get chopped off first
