I’m late on this (foiled by kids, again), but I agree that it was an unwarranted overturn of that play. Although he reached the ball past the line as he was going down, he had pulled the ball back almost an entire yard by the time his knee touched. I think it’s less conflation with forward progress and more with that action at the goal line or when going out of bounds.
