This whole "Richard Sherman is eloquent; he went to Stanford, don't believe the trash talk" story is backed up by pretty much nothing other than the desire to like a very talented player who appears to be one of the biggest asses in the NFL.

I remember when Ndamukong Suh had the "Oh, he's not a dirty player, he was such a nice guy at Nebraska" storyline too.

Why is Sherman an ass?  Oh, he took adderall?  OMG, no other people in the NFL take drugs.  Seriously, he isn't anything like Suh who is, indeed, a dirty player.  He is the best CB in football and he likes to act like a WWE villain.  Quick, hide the women and children!!!!!

Yeah, no. That was an asinine comment.

Even it was, the social chair was quick to swoop in and save the day by showing how offended he was. Just silly.

Have we met? I don't think I've agreed with so many of your posts today. Sherman the Villain vs. Manning the Saint -- it's the perfect foil.

I cannot wait until Sherman trash talks Eric Decker.

If you can't see why someone would think Richard Sherman is an asshole after he's repeatedly mocked players after a game to no benefit, I don't know what to tell you.

You mean the sportsmanship that most New England Patriot players show when they are at the line of scrimmage and are cussing out their opponents?  Or like the sportsmanship that Edelman displays when he makes a first down.  Or the sportsmanship that LGBT shows when he runs over  someone?  Virtually every player in the NFL talks shit.  The difference is that Sherman doesn't stop for the cameras.

So effing what?  The idea that these guys are fine, upstanding young men is stupid.  They are animals, groomed to hit hard and play through pain.
So you're going to equate Julian Edelman pointing for a first down with Sherman seeking out a player and getting in his face with a choke sign at the end of a conference championship game? Seriously?

Sherman's antics stand out. That was probably the most classless thing I have seen a player do in any sport.

I believe the story is that Sherman thinks Harbaugh spoke ill of him to NFL teams, which led to him falling in the draft.

Easy to imagine Harbaugh said something along the lines of "he's really talented, but he's an ass and really hard to deal with".  Since, you know, that appears to be the case....

Sherman is a pretty widely-acknowledged dirty player too. See, eg http://thebiglead.com/2013/12/02/richard-sherman-decked-kenny-stills-with-this-cheap-shot-in-the-end-zone/#sthash.9oIYmcDj.uxfs

Apparently Harbaugh suspended Sherman for some sideline stuff and Sherman also thought Harbaugh did a disservice to him leading to the NFL draft. Finally, Sherman is pretty close to the current Stanford staff and the football program.

Supposedly Sherman is no fan of harbaugh, which is interesting since he played for him at Stanford. Anyone know the back story there?

Edit: sorry, missed the earlier posts about it. My bad

Richard Sherman is awesome, and it's refreshing to see a guy like him in the league. He's absolutely one of if not the best at his position and he backs up his trash talk. He's entertaining and it's harmless. He's not a dirty player like Suh at all.

Ultimately, sports are entertainment. It's more entertaining if there are a couple villains.

I'm as disappointed as anyone here that the Pats were knocked out today, but from a neutral perspective it's hard to imagine a better matchup than the league's best offense vs. its best defense. Rooting hard for Seattle.

Who cares if Sherman mocked Crabtree , this isn't little league. These are grown men, Crabtree doesn't like it he'll have 2 opportunities to get him back on the field next year. I'll take Sherman's post game antics over some bland canned PC post game remarks any day. Plus it not like Harbaugh doesn't throw a fit on the sidelines every time he doesn't get a call.

Really? I'm not even making the argument Sherman's a dirty player, but he targeted an idle player, accelerated, and hit him blind. What is that if not a dirty hit (even if he's not a dirty player)?

Now that I've watched it back... about the worst he did was be arrogant, rep his own D, and call Crabtree "sorry."

It is possible that Sherman is all of:

- a great player
- really entertaining
- smart
- a jerk (at least in the moment on the field)

I don't know how you can defend the choke gesture. Just not what good competition is about, and I expect he'll be fined for it

When I think dirty, I think "intent to injure." I didn't see that in the linked hit.

Ok, not just "intent," but also the targeting of the neck, head, or knee (for example).

I realize this is the NFL and they're all playing for money and stuff, but I am incapable of watching someone do that "IN YOUR FACE" stuff and not think they're an asshole.  Sherman's a good player and all, but it seems like unless everyone in the room is either 1) good friends with him or 2) kissing his ass he's just a total dick.

I guess it's differing definitions of dirty then. Fair enough.

So Richard Sherman makes the game-clinching play and gets his moment in the sun with Erin Andrews, but in that moment, all he can talk about is his hate for Crabtree (and by extension, the 49ers).

I'm not judging him for that. The Niners and Seahawks are divisional rivals who, by all accounts, loathe one another. The Seahawks are nearly as excited to have dealt the Niners a nut-punch loss as they are to have made the Super Bowl. And I think it's kind of cool that Sherman popped off about those things in a postgame interview, rather than mouthing platitudes about God, country and some such.

Will be interesting to see if the league does anything to Sherman.

This is a league that wouldn't let Brandon Marshall wear a certain color cleats for a great cause and makes sure guys tuck in their shirts. Would be odd if they were fine with Sherman's antics.

It was pretty clear the whole game that she's a 49ers fan, just by her reactions and some of the things she said.

I think Periera said they are going to make it reviewable next season.  And it should be.  Even as a Seattle fan, it was pretty clear they blew that call.  But maybe it was a make up for the phantom hold in Super Bowl XL.

Are you a Sox fan?   Did you watch any of the 2003 ALDS and specifically what Derek Lowe did after he struck out Terrence Long?  Are you a Celtics fan?  Have you ever seen or heard of what Kevin Garnett says to opposing players  (google Garnett and Charlie Villanueva)?  And if you haven't seen the Patriots players talking shit, I don't know what to say.

Look, its anyone prerogative to hate Richard Sherman but let's not pretend that the guys who have played in your team's respective uniforms and spouted cliched platitudes are more classy.   They most certainly are not and anyone arguing otherwise is either dishonest or delusional.  I like Richard Sherman - he is a fantastic player and I think his actions, while not my thing, are no worse than the rest of the league.  The only difference is that he backs up his words with his play.

Classless is classless, no matter what players on which teams act that way. And that he can back up his actions with his talent does not excuse what some see as a lack of professionalism.

All the Sherman talk is obscuring the real story, which is that Kaepernick had bad turnovers on their last three possessions. He played great to get them this far in the playoffs but that was one of the most epic crunchtime QB meltdowns I've seen.

Agreed. Also think it's different when the trash talking takes place on the field unbeknownst to the fans. It's just a matter of respecting the opponent. Sherman seems incapable of compartmentalizing the smack talking. The league is full of amazing athletes with tons of pride, and I can never recall a guy doing a choke sign and/or calling out a player like that in a post game interview.

I can certainly see why anyone would find that rant "classless" or unsportsmanlike, but I can also see why it could be viewed simply as showmanship in what is ultimately an entertainment industry-and therefore not so inappropriate. For me it was both. I thought he was a dick, but I was laughing pretty hard.
