Yes but in the background. No one who follows the league day in day out cares or is all hot takey about "fixing it" or how it was "embarrassing". The people complaining are the ones who dont watch and tune in yesterday and see a shootaround.
I’m getting the sense that most of the people complaining are NBA journalists,
opinion writers and podcasters.

Again, I would be stunned if the vast majority of viewers weren’t avid NBA fans.

Over half the Lakers roster doesn't make that much money (relatively speaking) and never will, how many all stars aren't either already on or about to receive max or near max deals?

There's also the difference in that one is your actual team that you play with all the time and the other is a group of your buddies playing a single game
10-20 minutes of playing basketball with effort for $500K

If that doesn't work just cancel the All-Star game...it's been a waste of time for decades anyways.

The game is already ridiculous, I'd love to see them take it a step further:

Make the game 8 on 8, requiring them to leave 3 guys in the backcourt at all times.

Penalize the team 1 point for every missed 3 point attempt.

Allow in-game substitutions like the NHL.
Play the old girls' rules basketball - 3 on 3 on each basket; ball goes to the other basket after each score but the players stay.

How about they only play the ball with their feet? We can make the basket lower, maybe a bit bigger too

Well in your scenario only some of them are getting 500k, but no the promise of a potential 500k when most already make around that per game won't do anything. Compared to the in season tourney you referenced where every team has plenty of guys that 500k is a huge huge deal to

168 uncontested three pointers attempted in the game, 97 by the East. The only thing remotely interesting about that was Dame's half court shots, which looked like normal jumpers compared to the heaves most guys throw up from that distance.

In the past the games at least had guys making much more effort to try and pull playground moves out of their bag, which led to some creative stuff. Now apparently that is too much of an injury risk.

Has anyone ever been seriously hurt in an NBA All-Star game?
Kemba Walker.

Which is why I am okay with Celtics players goofing around during an all star game.

I think that there's a lot of truth to this.

I enjoyed the crazy pace and halfcourt shots. All of it really. It's goofy and fun. 3pt and dunk contests were fun too.

How is Bird still on the outs with the team? I know that he had issues with previous ownership, but how hasn’t getting him back in the fold been a priority for Wyc?
Since Wyc and Co bought the team, Bird was either coaching or GMing from 2003-2017. Surprising that LB hadn’t been to a Celtics game in Boston since, but he has stepped away from the league in general. When he used to attend games in the Garden when his Pacers were playing there, the building would erupt when he was shown on the big screen.

Im guessing that LB loves Tatum’s game and work ethic

If the NBA wanted a competitive, compelling game, they could just offer $1 million price to every player on the winning team. I don’t care how much NBA players make a year when you put money on the line, these competitive guys go for it.

Bird was also employed as an advisor to Indiana since stepping down in 2017 with one hiatus I believe for health purposes. He’s still a consultant today for the Pacers.

I guess I’m surprised that he wasn’t at the arena at some point when the Celtics visited since Tatum was drafted but the guy really has no reason to be in Boston unless he’s being honored for something. Sure, maybe he could fly in with his daughter for lunch or something but that has never been his thing.

I'm going to put this here, because people are saying the All-Star game was a joke.

Caitlin Clark broke the NCAA Women's scoring record and I thought "why are they so excited? She hasn't won a championship." And I realized I've been inflicted with NBA brain.

People have been crapping on Barkley for 30 years for not winning a championship and that's all anyone cares about. No one cares about the All-Star game, no one cares about the regular season.

Contracts are so high and the window for what is deemed success is so narrow, no wonder players are risk adverse for an exhibition game.

I was thinking it could be cool if the game was a mixed game with the WNBA all-stars playing on mixed teams with the NBA all-stars. Who knows if it would work, they play with a different ball, but it'd be novel and modern.

Same. I'm normally the exact type of fan who would want, "in the name of science", to see which conference has stronger players in total or which ones shine against their peers, if given a few days' practice together and full intensity. That would be great. But even I can keep the perspective of "it doesn't matter, it's just for fun" and react accordingly.

The 3-point contest definitely holds up the best in terms of spectacle and entertainment. Sabrina / Steph was the highlight, of course, and I hope they'll adopt some "best 3 WNBA vs best 3 NBA" format or something that lets us behold the best women's players in a more consistent manner (the one basketball skill they have that is just as good as the men, frankly, is shooting).

Not sure the dunk contest really brings it out for me, but other people love it so I won't get too up in arms. The announcers screaming after a dunk, where I'm left feeling like "...okay?", just gets to me eventually. It's like canned laughter in sitcoms. I can kinda appreciate the technique and control required to do stuff like under-the-legs and windmills, or what it takes to (say) jump over Shaq. But I also feel like I'm not watching anything all that more special than what I get watching Jaylen Brown, when he makes a penetration dribble and the help is late and he just stuffs it in a guy's face. That has the benefit of being unexpected, competitive / demeaning, and really physically aggressive / maximum energy, which is what makes it fun in a game setting. Graceful runs up to the basket in free time, as if it's a high-jump competition in track and field, just don't move me. I would honestly rather watch a HORSE competition.

HE IS LARRY F'ING BIRD. HE SHOULD BE HONORED BY THE TEAM/CITY JUST BY HIS PRESENCE

But also, the team could have enabled the meeting in Indy for a Celtics road game in the past.

I will try to be careful here, but this is playing out in front of us. A fair bit of research shows black women are less forgiving of racism, and at time more hostile to white people than black men. It all makes sense, black women suffer a lot within their community, and black girls are excluded, treated at least, probably worse, as bad by white girls as black boys are treated by their male white classmates. Add the double standard around dating in the black community where black male/ white female relationships are not only accepted but preferred by some while the black female /white male is seen mostly as taboo. Add in the number of elite women players who are gay, and suffer yet another level of discrimination. So the backlash against a white girl getting inordinate attention is understandable to a degree, but not any less ugly and sad.

There’s been backlash against Caitlin Clark? Do you have any articles to site on that? Because from where I sit the coverage has been overwhelmingly positive.. the rest of your post.. where did you get that from what you were responding to?

Cheryl Swoops opened her mouth and made a bunch of stupid (completely wrong and uninformed) statements about her. She claimed she played an extra year of college, and is 25. then people like Jason Whitlock made stupid comments about her stupid comments , which all seems very silly because Kelsey Plum (former record holder) was also a straight white girl.

Angel Reese of LSU also taunted Caitlin Clark in the aftermath of beating her for the title last year, which was in-game conduct not too far out of line with the trash talk that goes on in both men's and women's games - but got a bunch more attention that it would have otherwise because it appeared to be poor sportsmanship at the time, and probably also because of the races of the people involved. Clark herself talks a lot of trash.

Seems kind of silly that the NBA could be owning the calendar right now with interesting matchups and instead it’s as dead as the day after the mlb all star game. Bit of a wasted opportunity IMO.

Yeah, schedule the annual player rest time around the Super Bowl or something.

I know, I know, they really want/need the ASG to be a thing, but they're doing a piss-poor job of all aspects of that.
